✨✧ Big YouthRide Like Lightning – Best Of Big Youth 1972 to 1976 ... CD
Trojan, 1970s. Used 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
One of the true innovators of Jamaican DeeJaying, Big Youth not only turned the genre on it's head by bringing conscious roots style lyrics to the forefront, but also took control of the producer duties on many of his own sessions, and was no slouch at it either. This 2CD set is a nice collection of some his best tracks, with rhythms cut by many of the greatest in reggae. Total of 41 tracks, including "Cool Breeze", "Foreman vs. Frazier", "Chucky No Lucky", "Screaming Target", "Concrete Jungle", "Reggae Phenomenon", "Natty Cultural Dread", "Dread High Ranking", "Wolf In Sheep's Clothing" & "Every N*gger Is A Star". Fred LocksBlack Star Liner ... LP
Vulcan/VP, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 27.99
A mighty righteous set of roots material – but maybe that's no surprise, given that Fred Locks titled the album after the shipping line started by Marcus Garvey to help African-Americans get back to the homeland! On vocals, Fred's got an approach that's every bit in spirit with his rasta persona – lots of message in the music, but often delivered in a way that's nicely subtle, and partly personal – so that the politics come in alongside easygoing grooves, which maybe makes them even more powerful overall. All material is original, penned by Locks – and titles include "Wolf Wolf", "True Rastaman", "Don't Let Babylon Use You", "Vision Of Redemption", "Son Of The Almighty", and "Black Star Liners". Lee PerryVoodooism ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $23.99
We never get tired of these Lee Perry reissues! The first of several compilations put together by the fine folks at Pressure Sounds documenting Perry's tremendous output from his Black Ark studio, at the peak of his powers in the mid 70s. Mostly drawn from 45s of cuts that attained legendary status because of their small press runs, this superb collection brings together the vocal and dub versions of tracks originally released on the Black Art & Upsetter labels. 13 tracks in all including "Psalms 20" by James Boom, "African Style" by the Black Notes, "Wolf Out Deh" by Lloyd & Devon, "Voodooism" by Leo Graham & "Better Future" by Errol Walker, along with their dubs by the Upsetters. ✨✧ Bunny ScottTo Love Somebody (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Klik/Doctor Bird/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Warmly wonderful early work from William Bunny Clarke – billed here under a different name, but the same singer who'd rise to great fame a few years later as Bunny Rugs in Third World! The vibe here is different than his hits with that group – more laidback and mellow, with great production from Lee Perry – who knows more than enough to let Bunny shine in the lead when he wants, even while bringing in some sweet Scratch touches from time to time! The set features the wicked funky number "Kinky Fly" – plus lots of mellow rockers, including a version of "Use Me", and the cuts "What's The Use", "Big May", "Let Love Touch Us Now", "Second Avenue", and even versions of "Sweet Caroline" and "I Am I Said" – which have Bunny and Perry making sweet magic from the songs of Neil Diamond! Plus, this version has 8 more bonus tracks too – titles that include a great cover of "Be Thankful For What You've Got" – plus "Move Out Of My Way", "Dubbing In The Back Seat", "Freedom Fighter", "Iron Wolf", "Bushweed Corntrash", and "Cally Butt". Henry Junjo LawesJuno Presents – Evil Curse Of The Vampires (2CD pressing) ... CD
Greensleeves, 1981. New Copy 2CD ... $23.99 26.98
Scientist spins out on a dub-driven power boat – scanning the swamps to drive out the vampires and a host of other ghouls too – all while reinventing Jamaican music in the process! The record's filled with lots of cool electric elements – those weird production effects and electronic doodles that make the music of Scientist so revolutionary – especially when spun out over a still-familiar backdrop supplied by Roots Radics, with a core essence that's very much from the pre-digital world of Jamaican music. Rhythm tracks were done at Channel One, and Scientist mixed the set at King Tubbys – a host of dub mini-masterpieces that include "The Voodoo Curse", "Dance Of The Vampires", "Blood On His Lips", "Cry Of The Werewolf", "the Mummy's Shroud", "The Corpse Rises", "Night Of The Living Dead", "Your Teeth In My Neck", "Plague Of Zombies", and "Ghost Of Frankenstein". 2CD version features a full bonus record of vocal versions – by Wailing Souls, Wayne Jarrett, Johnny Osbourne, and Michael Prophet! ✨✧ VariousDisco Reggae Vol 4 ... LP
Stix (France), 2021. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic entry in this really great series – a set that's not really disco or reggae, but which reimagines classic soul and funk tracks with a blend of laidback rhythms and contemporary instrumentation! True, you might play this stuff at a club – but the overall vibe here is a lot deeper, and the music is a great summation of the spirit that the Stix label has put into their singles over the years – usually very expensive on their own, which makes this full length set a really great introduction to their music! Titles include remakes of "We Love In Brooklyn" by Soul Sugar, "Take Me With You (unreleased discomix)" by Blundetto & Booker Gee, "Summertime" by Wolfgang, "Boogie Oogie Oogie" by Mato, "Risin To The Top" by Hawa, and the cuts "She Can't Love You", "Radiactivity", and "Forget Me Nots" by Taggy Matcher.
