Incredible! This is quite possibly the best of this legendary series of Jamaican soul, funk, and reggae tracks – and it's a masterpiece! The track selection is amazing, and the set has a bit more crackle than earlier volumes – with loads of great 70s production, including nice dubby bits, and some excellent instrumentation. A super-rare set from Max Romeo – material done with Bunny Lee before his better-known late 70s sides for Lee Perry – and music that's maybe even grittier in the grooves overall! There's a raw, early roots vibe going on here – although some of the song themes are maybe more personal than political, yet woven together strongly to make a great document of the sort of contributions that Romeo could bring to the music. Fantastic sounds from the years before reggae became the international sound of Jamaica – music from the island nation's jazz scene, which was at the crossroads of so many different styles of music – jazz from the north, Latin rhythms from Cuba and Puerto Rico, and a fair bit of other Caribbean sounds too – all of which filter through the wonderful collection of music on the set!
