A single album combining the classic 70s Heptones sides Night Food and Party Time, two of the band's strongest albums. The first set was cut at Harry J's, and is a bit more produced than some of their earlier sides, but has some great vocal harmonies and updates of awesome Studio One rhythms, which originated with bass player and lead singer Leroy Sibbles. The follow up, Party Time, finds the Heptones teaming up with Lee Perry for a wonderful set laid down at the legendary Black Ark, with Sibbles' always great songwriting over a set of nice roots rhythms laid down by Boris Gardiner, Winston Wright, Mikey Boo, Willie Lindo and others. Includes "Country Boy", "Book Of Rules", "Love Won't Come Easy", "Fatty Fatty" and "Mama Say", "Party Time", "Crying Over You", "I Shall Be Released", "Why Must I" and "Sufferer's Time", 20 tracks in all. CD
Clasic toasting and freestyling from I- Roy, one of the most heavyweight DJs of all time! Riding some of the finest rhythms of Buny Lee & Keith Hudson mixed by dub master King Tubby & Errol Thompson, this collection features boasts and more conscious topics, too: "Hot Stuff", "Black Talk", "Sufferer's Psalm", "Superfly" and "Straight to Heathen Head". CD
A mighty tribute to the genius of one of the greatest producers of all time – a figure who helped not only shape the sound of Jamaican music from the late 60s onwards, but also influence a fair bit of the rest of the world as well! The set's a well-chosen collection of material from a range of different segments of Perry's career – impossible to sum up perfectly in a short space, but very well-conveyed here! Titles include "Tighten Up" by The Inspiration, "Return Of Django" by The Upsetters, "Words Of My Mouth" by The Gatherers, "Beat Down Babylon" by Junior Byles, "Do It Baby (7" mix)" by Susan Cadogan, "Three Blind Mice" by Max Romeo, "Bushweek Corntrash" by Bunny & Ricky, "Sufferer's Time" by The Heptones, and "Natty Pass Through Rome" by Prince Jazzbo – plus Perry tracks that include "Roast Fish & Corn Bread (Jamaican mix)", "Bucky Skank", "Stay Dread", "People Funny Boy", and "Jungle Lion (7" mix)". LP, Vinyl record album
A heavy helping of work from this excellent Jamaican trio – one of the best soulful groups of the rocksteady years, stepping out here in a mode that's similar to early material from The Wailers! The Tennors really shine here in a great blend of harmony vocals and tight Kingston rhythms – occasional currents of ska moving through early reggae modes – with top shelf studio backing to keep the groove. The set features 14 early scorchers – titles that include "Born To Be A Sufferer", "Sign Of The Times", "Do The Reggay Dance", "San Sebastian", "Tribute To Don Drummond", "Shame Face", "Deportation", and "I Am Just A Minstrel". LP, Vinyl record album
Heavy transatlantic vibrations selected by Don Letts!
