✨✧ Pierre Henry/Michel ColombierMetamorphose – Messe Pour Le Temps Present ... CD
Polygram (France), 1997. Used ... $14.99
This is the new remix of Pierre Henry's famous funky electronic ballet from 1967. They've selected a wide range of artists to handle it, from the great Dimitri from Paris, to the popular Fatboy Slim, and the list includes other names like The Mighty Bop, William Orbit, Coldcut, and Funki Porcini. The sound varies, but there's some very nice moments that add a good bit to the original. Some of these cuts were floating around on expensive 12" singles before, and although this French issue isn't cheap, it's still a nice jam-packed selection of cuts, and has some great moments that bridge the history of electronica. ✨✧ Pierre HenryPierre Henry Collector (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Universal (France), 2010s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A mindblowing journey in sound – a dip into the archives of French composer Pierre Henry – the postwar master of electronics and musique concrete, and an artist who was still very active in the final years of his life! The material here was all either recorded or reworked in Henry's own studio during the last few years of his time on the planet – with some tracks that revisit important early compositions, but with a different sonic perspective – mixed with a few new pieces that really continue that wellspring of recording that Henry was doing from the mid 90s onward! There's a wonderful array of sonic elements throughout – plenty of electronics, compelling tape and analog sounds, and lots more that we're hard pressed to figure out – in the best tradition of Pierre's music. Titles include "Variance (remix de Variations)", "Rock Electronique/La Reine Verte", "Prologue/Messe Pour Le Temps Present", "Danse/Mouvement Rythme Etude", "Final/Utopia Hip Hop", "Tokyo 2002", "Machine Danse", and "Tunne De La Mort/Le Fil De La Vie". LP features bonus tracks "Metamorphose/Fragments Rituels", "Enchevetrements De Spirales/Tam Tam Du Merveilleux", and "Etincell Qui Relie Deux Nuits". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Pierre HenryPolyphonies (12CD set) ... CD
Universal (France), 1950s/1960s/1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s/2010s. New Copy 12CD set ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Life-changing music from Pierre Henry – one of the key French electronic music composers of the 20th Century – and an artist who went on to have a big impact in the 21st Century as well! This set mixes together key Henry compositions with nine never-released works – all remastered by Henry in his own famous studio – where he took up most of his later-life creative activity, after an initial association with the famous RTF Studio in Paris! The sounds here are incredible – truly an illustration of the genius of the man who once said "it is necessary to destroy music" – a thesis that Pierre expounds on more fully in the notes within. The package features a total of 29 works in all, presented on 12 CDs with a big booklet of notes – and works include "Chroniques Terriennes" (2016), "Etudes Transcendantes Pour Un Piano Imaginaire" (2015), "Grande Toccata" (2006), "Gymkhana" (1970), "Pleins Jeux" (2008), "Kyldex" (1973), "Une Tour De Babel" (1988), "La Reine Verte", "Rock Electronique" (1963), "Histoire Naturelle" (1997), "Facies" (1960), "Le Livre Des Morts Egyptien" (1988), "Fragments Pour Artaud" (1970), "La Noire A Soixante" (1961), "Deuxieme Symphonie" (1972), "Spatiodynamisme" (1953), and "Concerto Des Ambiguites" (1950). ✨✧ Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, & OthersMusique Concrete 1956 to 1962 ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
The birth of a key moment in avant garde music – served up here in a series of recordings that are nicely different than some of the other musique concrete material on the market! The package brings together some early "panorama" presentations of the work – two from the Club D'Essai program on French TV, with crucial work from Pierre Henry and Pierre Schaeffer, working in that blend of acoustic instruments with electronic results that seemed to grace so much of these early experiments! There's also contributions from Philippe Arthuys on one of the programs – and the set then moves onto CD2, which has even more variety in the music. The first section of CD2 features selections from a 1959 showcase of musique concrete by the Groupe De Recherces Musicales – with work by Iannis Xenakis, Henri Sauget, Luc Ferrari, Michel Philippot, and Schaeffer. The second part of that CD features the soundtrack to the film Malefices D'Henri Decoin by Pierre Henry – a selection of very cool songs! CD

Suzanne CianiFlowers Of Evil ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 26.99
Suzanne Ciani has cut some sweeter sets over the years, but this album's definitely not one of them – as the whole thing is an early piece from the artist's career, recorded on the Buchla synthesizer, and based on the work of Charles Baudelaire! The core piece, "Flower Of Evil", features a recitation of a Baudelaire poem right into the Buchla – which then complicates and distorts the voice, as it mixes with these wonderful waves of analogue electronics – bubbling, flowing, and stretching out to create this moody landscape that really would have made the poet proud! The other three selections on the record are even more stark and spooky – still done on the Buchla, but with a vibe that's maybe even more in the mode of some of the Pierre Henry experiments from the same time. Titles include "Glass Houses" and "Token Spokes (parts 1 & 2)". (Sound Library, Out Sound) LP, Vinyl record album

Michel MagneMusique Taschiste ... LP
Cacophonic (UK), 1957. New Copy ... $10.99 26.99
Striking sounds from Michel Magne – an artist who's best known for his groovy soundtracks of the 60s – but who steps out here with a rare experimental set from the late 50s! The style is very much in keeping with the most compelling of the postwar generation in France – as Magne mixes together electronic and acoustic sounds with amazing power – modes that are sometimes as spacious as Pierre Henry, other times as sonically powerful as Xenakis – yet always very much Michel's own unique musical vision! Instrumentation includes some great cymbalum, plus piano, violin, vibes, and percussion – as well as some amzing vocalizations from Jaqueline Dano and Christiane Legrand. Titles include "Memoire D'Un Trou", "Self Service", "Concertino Triple", "Meta Mecanique Saccadee", "Larmes En Sol Pleureur", and "Pointes De Feu Amorties Au Dolsal". ✨✧ Raymond ScottManhattan Research Inc – New Plastic Sounds & Electronic Abstractions ... CD
Basta (Netherlands), 1950s/1960s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Amazing! This is one of the coolest CDs we've seen in years – and everything about it is fantastic, from the package right down to the double-length set of music! The set features rare unreleased recordings from Raymond Scott's legendary Manhattan Research electronic music studios – originally set up in 1946, and home to some of Scott's landmark early work on non-acoustic music during the 50s and 60s. Far from being the sort of turgid, dark knob-twiddling that computer music later became in the academy, Scott's early experiments are filled with a sense of whimsy and joy – exported directly from his early cartoon-based work, and applied in a fantastic way to his evolving musical inventions! Plus, the whole thing's packaged in this super-cool hardcover book, with a whopping 140 pages of notes, photographs, old advertisements, and interviews – all done in a brilliant graphic style that complements the package even further! Don't forget the music, though – because it's totally fantastic – and kind of reminds us of bits of Jon Appleton's Syntonic Menagerie, Pierre Henry's early Musique Concrete, and later punk-era DIY electronics. That doesn't even come close to pinning it down, though – and with 2 CDs worth of material, the scope of the work is amazing! CD

✨✧ Ruth WhiteFlowers Of Evil ... CD
Limelight/Rhythm Productions, 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really cool blend of voice and electronics – years ahead of its time, and with a vibe that maybe prefaces some of the European industrial work to come at the end of the 70s! Ruth White is well known for her electronic experimentation – right up there with the work of Pierre Henry at the same time – but for this release, she also adds a bit of her own voice too – readings of words from the poems of Charles Baudelaire, but processed in ways that really emphasize some of the darkness in the lines in a really great way! White does all sorts of cool things with her voice, in ways that are again years ahead of their time – and titles include "Owls", "The Cat", "Spleen", and "The Litanies Of Satan". CD

✨✧ VariousDanse Sacrale – 14 Early Avant-Garde & Electronic Compositions For Ballet & Modern Dance ... CD
Cacophonic (UK), Late 50s/1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
An amazing compilation of early electronic dance music – not only featuring some of coolest, most out there and progressive experimental electronic soundscapes of the era – but strangely moving, too! It has work by some legendary avant garde composers, made for remarkably forward-thinking ballet companies and other modern dance groups – much of it from the late 50s to early 60s – with some pretty raw, eerie electronic experimentation, and some grander, almost operatic pieces, too! Compiled by Andy Votel, and featuring work by Pierre Henry, Remi Gassman, Jean-Claude Vannier and many more. Includes "Arioso" by Henk Badings, "Ballet Jeux D'Ombres" by Lazry-Baschet, "Scherzo" by Remi Gassman, "Tam Tam" by Pierre Henry, "Konflikt" by Henk Badings, "Danse Sacrale" by Igor Wakhevitch, "Aeolus" by Alwin Nikolais, "Le Ballet Des Accoucheueses" by Jean-Claude Vannier, "Transfiguration" by Pierre Henry and more. ✨✧ Ruth White7 Trumps From The Tarot Cards & Pinions ... CD
Limelight/Rhythm Productions, 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very cool set from electronic pioneer Ruth White – a record that was originally issued as part of the avant modern series on Limelight, and which has a very different vibe than some of her more easygoing albums! The first half of the set features the long piece 7 Trumps From The Tarot Cards – with very dark, very abstract electronics that really have White matching the energy of Pierre Henry at times – and by that, we mean Henry's moodier, less groovy work that was also being issued on Limelight at the same time! The second half of the record features Pinions – a suite of tracks done for a dance performance based on "symbolic flight" – and for the music, White is maybe a bit more tuneful at times, but still really open to exploring some of the farther, moodier territory in the world of analog electronics. ✨✧ VariousRevolution In Sound – Pop Culture & The Avant Garde (4CD set) ... CD
El (UK), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A really great idea for a collection – one that brings together postwar modern music in all of its many formats – from avant jazz, to early electronics, to Indian music, 20th Century classical, and even a bit of straighter jazz moments too! The package is very ear-opening – as it offers the chance to hear instrumentalists next to compositional talents that had inspired them – and the collection provides a way to hear different strains of sonic experimentation that were sometimes running parallel to each other, sometimes criss-crossing in strange ways. There's a wealth of musical discoveries throughout – and the 4CD set is overflowing with key cuts from Ornette Coleman, Bela Bartok, Edgard Varese, Daphne Oram, Jean Sibelius, Eric Dolphy, Ravi Shankar, Pierre Henry, John Cate, John Coltrane, Humphrey Searle, Arnold Schoenberg, Bill Evans, Olivier Messiaen, Luigi Nono, Charles Ives, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Bruno Maderna, Julian Bream, and many others.
