Robert AshleyPrivate Parts ... LP
Lovely, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
One of the most important records from composer Robert Ashley – and one that's got a compact approach that helped it circulate a lot more than some of Ashley's larger operas! This piece is very much like those – with Ashley's unique spoken approach – part poetry, part performance art – but the sound is more stripped-down, and in the spirit of the young downtown New York generation of Laurie Anderson and Phillip Glass – served up with great instrumental help from contemporary Blue Gene Tyranny, who plays piano, moog, and clavinet – with some additional tablas for accompaniment! The whole thing was recorded at the important Center For Contemporary Music on the west coast, at Mills College – and is almost a Bay Area answer to some of the more compelling art records from the New York scene. The record is divided into 2 parts – "The Park" and "The Backyard" – both filled with a hypnotic mix of voice, keyboards, and tablas! LP, Vinyl record album

David ByrneMusic For The Knee Plays ... LP
ECM, 1985. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A really great record from David Byrne – songs and spoken bits that were originally designed to be used in Robert Wilson's Civil Wars – but which work great on their own! Byrne is completely charming in the spoken bits – with a sense of dry wit mixed with humanism, not that different from Laurie Anderson at the time – and instrumentation features a range of reeds and trumpets, gently cascading with the rhythms of the tunes – but in a relatively subtle way. Tracks include the wonderful "Tree" – aka "Today Is An Important Occasion" – plus "In The Upper Room", "Sound Of Business", "Admiral Perry", "I Bid You Goodnight", "In The Future", "Where The Sun Never Goes Down", "Theadora Is Dozing", "Social Studies", "Winter", and "The Jungle Book". ✨✧ John CageLollipops – 25 Year Retrospective Concert/Indeterminacy/Double Music/Cartridge Music/Fontana Mix (3CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
An excellent collection of early work by John Cage – and a set that's maybe not nearly as sweet as you'd guess from the "lollipops" in the title! The box is worth it alone for its presentation of the 25 Year Retrospective Concert – which brings together 1958 performance versions of important early works, including "Imaginary Landscape No 1", "Six Short Inventions For Seven Instruments", "First Construction In Metal", "She Is Asleep" (in quartet and duo version), "Sonatas & Interludes", "Music For Carillion No 1", "Williams Mix", and "Concert For Piano & Orchestra", which was new at the time. The package then goes on to include "Double Music" by Cage with Lou Harrison, the spoken word/piano statement "Indeterminacy" done with David Tudor, and key early readings of "Cartridge Music" and "Fontana Mix". ✨✧ Brian EnoDiscreet Music (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Obscure/Astralwerks, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! (Rock, Out Sound) LP, Vinyl record album

Fred Frith/Nicolas Humbert/Marc ParisottoCut Up The Border ... CD
Rogue Art (France), 2020. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
One of the most revolutionary albums in years from guitarist Fred Frith – and a set that really returns to the sonic genius of his important records of the 70s! The format is quite unusual – as the music combines live performance with reworked sounds that were recorded for the 1990 film Step Across The Border – cut up and used in various ways, as referenced by the title of the album – while Frith plays endlessly effortlessly creative sounds on the guitar, plus a bit of bass, organ, and piano too. Nicolas Humbert and Marc Parisotto handle the larger sonic landscape and do the cutting up, based on core recordings done decades ago by Jean Vapeaur – and there's a sense of imagination and wit to the recording that shows us that the core spirit of Frith is alive and well! Gruppo D'Improvvisazione Nuova ConsonanzaGruppo D'Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza (1965) ... LP
Cinevox (Italy), 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
One of the most obscure chapters in the career of Ennio Morricone – important avant garde work recorded in the mid 60s, just at a point when he was beginning to rise in soundtrack fame! The ensemble is a key Italian modernist group featuring Morricone, Giovanni Piazza, Mario Bertoncini, Egisto Macchi, Gualtiero Branch, Jesus Villa Rojo, and Francesco Evangelisti – mostly classically-trained musicians, but working here in a set of improvisations that are extremely spare, and which are very much at the lower end of the sound spectrum. Many of the sounds on the set are right at the frontiers of hearing – and others, while more present, disappear as quickly as they emerge – further enforcing the mystery and mood of the record. And while the overall style is quite different than Morricone's soundtrack work, the group was clearly a key testing ground for his ideas of sound and space that emerged later. Titles include "Soup", "Scratch", "Settimino", and "Eflot". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Pierre HenryPolyphonies (12CD set) ... CD
Universal, New Copy 12CD ... Out Of Stock
A fittingly massive collection of works by one of the most important electronic composers ever! The 12CD Polyphonies features material chosen and remastered by Henry himself specifically for this box set in the months before he passed away, so he's pretty well in charge of his legacy here. It's made up of compositions from as early as 1950 and as late as 2016, brilliantly showing how vital Henry was throughout the decades – with 9 of the 29 pieces previously unreleased – and includes "Chroniques Terriennes" (2016), "Etudes Transcendantes Pour Un Piano Imaginaire" (2015), "Grande Toccata" (2006), "Gymkhana" (1970), "Pleins Jeux" (2008), "Kyldex" (1973), "Une Tour De Babel" (1988)"La Reine Verte", Rock Electronique" (1963), "Histoire Naturelle" (1997), "Facies" (1960), "Le Livre Des Morts Egyptien" (1988), "Fragments Pour Artaud" (1970), "La Noire A Soixante" (1961), "Deuxieme Symphonie" (1972), "Spatiodynamisme" (1953), "Concerto Des Ambiguites" (1950) and more. ✨✧ Joe McPhee/Ken Vandermark/Kent KesslerMeeting In Chicago ... CD
Okka Disk, 1998. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A seminal early set on the Okka Disk label – the important Chicago avant imprint who began documenting an important stretch of the career of Joe McPhee – much as the Hat Hut label had begun 20 years before! The set features performances recorded during McPhee's first appearance in Chicago during the mid 90s – the start of a beautiful relationship that would continue for decades to come – and McPhee blows both reeds and trumpet, in a trio with Ken Vandermark on saxes and Kent Kessler on bass – all working together in a very open studio format that has the players shifting between trio work, to solo and duo performances too. The recording is crucial – as McPhee's sensitivity brings out a whole new side of both Chicago players – on titles that include "Heart Of The Matter", "A Meeting In Chicago", "Breakneck Ridge", "Lalibela", "Empty Bottle Blues", "Fourteen Years Later", and "I Leave You Love". ✨✧ Meredith MonkKey ... CD
Lovely, 1971. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Haunting early work by Meredith Monk – recorded in 1971, and performed by a small group of vocalists – all working with Monk in an incredible presentation of her new ideas for voice! The music is already at a place that's light years ahead of most – clearly marking the singer as one of the most visionary artists of her generation – as important as Philip Glass or Steve Reich – even though the more personal presentation of Monk's music never got her into the concert hall repertoire as much as her contemporaries. Meredith plays electric organ, jews harp, and sings – and the piece is one long work that covers the entire album. CD

✨✧ MoondogMoondog On The Streets Of New York (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Mars/Lucia, 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A stunning set of early work from the legendary Moondog – recorded on the streets of New York, but with a complexity and sophistication that may well beat his famous early albums on Prestige! The sounds here are amazing – the work of a composer who's stripped everything down to the core, and who finds these organic ways for percussion to interact with woodwinds and strings – all at a level that has a surprising richness in its simplicity – a mode that not only made Moondog an important outsider artist of his generation, but also a huge influence on minimalism, modern jazz, and even the worlds of exotica and other instrumental styles! This 12" LP expands the original 45rpm single with a lot more material from the collection of recordist Tony Schwartz – and titles include "Fog On The Hudson", "Moondog Nocturne Suite", "Why Spend The Dark Night With You", "On & Off The Beat", "From One To Nine", "Untitled Percussion Solo 1", "Untitled Percussion Solo In Traffic 2", "Untitled Chant 4", "Utsu", "Lullaby", and "Avenue Of The Americas". ✨✧ Terry RileyRainbow In Cologne ... CD
Be! (Germany), 1971. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic addition to the catalog of Terry Riley during his most influential years – a set that features two long, extended organ performances by the minimalist – both on a par with his best records of the time! The similarity in title to Riley's classic Rainbow In Curved Air album is no surprise – as the sound here is very similar, and he performs a stunning 61 minute version of that song on the first CD in the set – one that's more open, more expressive, and more compelling than even the studio take – as Terry layers his lines on organ in a really beautiful way! CD2 features and equally wonderful version of "Persian Surgery Dervishes" – almost 50 minutes in length, and done at a level that shows how important individual examples of performance were amidst the minimalist canon! The package is a great introduction to this important stretch in music – and features recordings that are every bit as mindblowing now as they were over 50 years ago – really revolutionary sounds and tones that went onto have an undeniable impact on modern music, yet which still sound even more amazing here in the original source recordings. Includes "Poeme Electronique" by Edgard Varese, "Voile D'Orphee" by Pierre Henre, "Diamorphoses" and "Concret PH" by Iannis Xenakis, "Studie Nr 1" and "Gesang Der Junglinge" by Karlheinz Stockhausen, and "Cinq Etudes De Bruits" by Pierre Schaeffer. Edgar VareseMusic Of Edgar Varese Vol 2 – Arcana/Deserts/Offrandes – Dona Precht/Robert Craft/Columbia Symphony ... LP
Columbia, 1962. Very Good ... $6.99
Three very different slices of the genius of Edgar Varese – presented here on a set of classic Columbia recordings from the early 60s! "Arcana" is perhaps the most ambitious work here – structured for an orchestra of 120 musicians, 70 of whom are string players – although the core energy of the piece seems to come from the 8 percussionists who handle a wide variety of instruments – creating those stark sounds that mark some of Varese's most important compositions – which the strings, brass, and woodwinds cluster around in equally powerful ways! "Deserts" is a piece that's more subtle, and much longer – mixing a variety of electronic sounds and instrumental moments, with shifting sonic spaces and volumes throughout – all to make up a side-long recording filled with moody moments and more powerful electronic bursts. "Offrandes" is a selection of two songs – in a haunting blend of woodwind instruments, percussion, and trumpet – plus vocals from soprano Dona Precht. LP, Vinyl record album
