✨✧ AvalanchesSki Surfin ... CD
Warner/Collectors Choice, 1963. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Not a surf record, but a ski record – one recorded in a style that's very much in the best surf instrumental mode of the time – with guitars from Tommy Tedesco and Billy Strange, plus super-tight drums from the legendary Hal Blaine! Given the power of the group in the studio, the sound is plenty darn great – tightly focused and very well recorded at Gold Star Studios – with a sound that's arguably even better than most of the other straight surf groups on the market at the time. A few tracks are surf-styled versions of "winter" tunes – like "Canadian Sunset", "Sleigh Ride", "Baby It's Cold Outside", and "Winter Wonderland" – and others are originals, or familiar covers redone. Additional titles include "Avalanche", "Ski Surfin", "Winter Evening Nocturne", and "Midnight Sun". (Rock, Now Sound) CD

✨✧ Raymond ScottReckless Nights & Turkish Twilights – The Music Of Raymond Scott ... CD
Columbia, Late 30s. Used ... $3.99
A wonderful batch of instrumentals from the legendary Raymond Scott – and a set that features some of Scott's most wonderful compositions ever! These numbers all date from the 30s, and were originally released as 78s on the Master Records label – but this later Columbia package really brings the sounds together wonderfully, and gives Scott a long-overdue showcase as one of the budding modernists of the pre-war years – a composer who could match swing and whimsy, exoticism and jazz, playfulness and poise – all without every losing his beat! The instrumental is wonderful, the arrangements inventive, and the whole thing's got the same sort of audio appeal as an old Warner Brothers cartoon. Titles include "Twilight In Turkey", "The Penguin", "The Toy Trumpet", "Powerhouse", "New Years Eve In A Haunted House", "War Dance For Wooden Indians", "Peter Tambourine", and "At An Arabian House Party".
