✨✧ Caterina Valente with Edmundo RosFire & Frenzy ... LP
London, 1960. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A set cut with British maestro Edmundo Ros – in a style that's similar to some of his own albums from the time – not really straight Latin, but more a blend of tropical and exotic influences with some fuller big band modes! The style has almost an older sort of sound here – reminding us of work that might have appeared on RCA or Columbia during the previous decade – and Ros' sense of subtle drama is a nice counterpoint to Caterina's sometimes sweeter vocals. Titles include "Baiao", "Canto Karabali", "Frenesi", "Fale Baixinho", "Felicidade Infeliz", and "Saudades Da Bahia", which features Ros and Valente scatting together beautifully! ✨✧ Martin DennyAfro-Desia ... LP
Liberty, 1959. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Weird and wonderful work from the great Martin Denny – and a record that adds in some great extra elements to his core exotica groove! The depth of the album is apparent on the very first tune – "Tsetse Fly", which features a buzzing variation on the sound of the insect in the title – then shows up even more strongly through the heavier rhythms and added vocals that appear on many of the album's other tracks. There's a style here that's almost Afro-Cuban at times – but which still glides across nicely with that heavenly Denny approach to melody and rhythm! Titles include "Tsetse Fly", "Ma'Chumba", "Simba", "Raftero", "Swamp Fire", and "Cubano Chant". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original mono turquoise label pressing, with deep groove. Cover has light wear.)

Bernie Green & His OrchestraFutura ... LP
RCA, 1961. Very Good ... $6.99
One of the best of RCA's Stereo Action series! Bernie Green leads his orchestra through a set of material that tries to answer the question "What will pop music sound like in 1970?" (keep in mind that this is 1961) – and a number of the tracks feature a "guitar orchestra" that sounds really really great, with a wide-open sound that's totally wonderful – the best realization of the RCA stereo sound of the time! The record's got a vague bit of electronics mixed with the guitar, plus a bit of vibes – and the whole thing aptly earns its Futura tag with a space-age approach to the music. Titles include "Futura", "Steel Bones", "Kiss of Fire", "Pentagon", "Out Of This World", and "Ping Pong". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing with deep groove, 1s stampers! In the die-cut cover with heavy inner sleeve.)

Arthur LymanYellow Bird ... LP
Hi Fi, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... $6.99 8.99
Sweet exotic sounds from the Arthur Lyman group – heavy on vibes and lots of hip percussion – recorded with a gently swaying feel that recalls the best energy of the Hawaiian scene in the postwar years! The set's one of Lyman's early solo dates – recorded Henry Kaiser Aluminum Dome in Hawaii – which you can almost hear in the way the sounds here resonate, and hang sweetly in air. The tunes are pretty mellow, but in a good way – more sonically sensitive than some more gimmicky, sound effect-heavy exotica – and titles include "Adventures in Paradise", "Andalusia", "Yellow Bird", "Arrivederci Roma", "Sweet & Lovely", "Bamboo Taboo", "Granada", and "Ravel's Bolero". Fire up that console stereo and break out the Tiki glasses! LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing. Cover has light wear and aging.)

Gabor SzaboDreams (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Skye/Ebalunga (Austria), 1968. New Copy ... $18.99 19.98
The guitar genius of Gabor Szabo – set to magnificent arrangements by Gary McFarland! The set's one of the most sophisticated albums Szabo ever cut – and has a slow-building style that steps off of his Impulse years with a deeper, broader vision of music. By the time of the set, McFarland himself was hitting a more contemplative style in his own music – and you can hear that shift in this album as well, especially in the moodier, mellower moments. Instrumentation includes violin, cello, and French Horn – all used sparingly to augment Szabo's small combo with piano by McFarland! Titles include lots of originals – "The Fortune Teller", "Half The Day Is Night", "Galatea's Guitar", and "Lady In the Moon". CD features bonus tracks – single edits of "Fire Dance" and "Ferris Wheel". (Jazz, Now Sound) CD
