Wicked funk from Japanese keyboardist Norio Maeda – also a hell of an arranger, too – as you'll hear on this superb set from the start of the 70s! The record's one of those key albums that took a 60s groovy Japanese sound much further into the future – giving the whole thing a sharper edge, with heavier drums – and using trippy guitar, weird flute lines, and keyboards to give the whole thing a vibe that's almost more blacksploitation or kung fu soundtrack than most of what Maeda had done before! Tracks are all pretty lively, and work together as a sweet set of grooves – almost with a funky Lalo Schifrin sort of vibe – and all the notes and titles are in Japanese, or else we'd have even more information to convey. A Batman knock-off record – but a really great one! This set was originally issued in the mid 60s on the cheapo Crown label on the west coast – and it's a surprisingly smoking set of instrumental tracks that are heavy on the Hammond and horns, and which romp along with a mod sort of go-go groove! Only the leadoff track is actually a Batman one – and the rest are instrumentals penned by Maxwell Davies, titled in ways that really get at the grooviness of the set – "Harry Danger", "Super Chase", "Creepy Crawlers", "Lotta Trouble", "Irving Evil", and "Mean & Nasty". CD also features 3 bonus tracks from Davies' Harlem Brass project for Crown – including "Green Hornet Theme", "Tijuana Harlem", and "The Good The Bad & The Ugly". CD

Great new collection of the fantastic magical work of the great Harper's Bizarre. One of the jewels in the crown of the LA studio scene of the late 60's, this superb pop group was sort of a mix of Brian Wilson-style vocals, soundtrack kitsch, and Now Sound instrumentation – with lots of little Warner bits like Van Dyke Parks and Randy Newman thrown in. Great 14 track comp, with some of the best LP cuts, like "Come to the Sunshine", "Biggest Night of Her Life", "Witchi Tai To", "Poly High", and "Happyland". Crazy and wonderful. (Rock, Now Sound)CD
