A beautifully baroque batch of tracks, written and arranged for the Electric Prunes by the great David Axelrod – a really groundbreaking mix of modes that had quite an impact back in the late 60s! The record shows Axelrod's perpetual fascination with the spiritual – mixed with that great modern style of funk that he was forging at Capitol during the late 60s. The record's not really preachy, nor is it proggy. It's more of a complex blueprint of rock, jazz, funk, and touches of soul – all hung together on the same sort of "mass" structure that Axelrod would later use with Cannonball and on his own. A pretty cool record from legendary drummer Gene Krupa – filled with loads of unusual percussion, all played live for the recording – set to arrangements by George Williams that are mighty dynamic! A pair of Enoch Light oddities from the 70s – both in Quad! First up is Beatles Classics – a very cool take on the sound of The Beatles – served up here by Enoch Light, but in a way that's a bit different than some of his other records of the time! The set features symphonic readings of tunes by the fab four – much more heavy on woodwinds and strings than you might expect, but still delivered with that sense of separation that can make Light's music so great – with solo standouts that are completely seductive! Titles include the suite "Hello Goodbye/Something/Penny Lane" – plus "Eleanor Rigby", "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", "Let It Be", "Hey Jude", "Michelle", and "Norwegian Wood". Serendipity has reverse sort of approach – as the set takes classical themes, but strips them down a bit for the 70s – the unique Enoch Light spin on themes from Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, and Chopin! A long-overdue collection of the brilliant work of German easy composer Berry Lipman! Lipman was the hipster monniker of bandleader Friedel Berlipp – a pseudonymn that Berlipp used for a series of dreamy and groovy easy listening albums in the late 60s and 1970s, records that were a blend of European tropical fantasies with some of the easy grooves that were coming out of American labels like A&M. Lipman's style is heavy on the horns – in a manner that's a bit like Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass, but with a smoother 70s sound. Imagine the Love Boat soaring through some easy bossa island – trumpet in the lead, groovy TV singers in the background, with soaring strings and the slightest touch of funk from time to time – and you've only got part of the picture! The set's put together with a lot of care – and it includes some English notes and photos of Lipman looking very groovy in the 70s. Titles include "Concerto For Young Lovers", "Night Fever", "Wives & Lovers", "Bonita Carmencita", "Beach Party In Santa Cruz", "Hey Du", "I Like It", "Easy Drummin", "Helicopter Power", "Girl Talk", "The Girl From Ipanema", and "Saludos Amigos". Walter Carlos (now Wendy) performs electronic versions of many classics on the Moog. If nothing else, this is an interesting period piece, though on a certain level we're quite fond of it, oth in it's performance and it's motivation. Moogy takes of Monteverdi's "Orfeo" suite, several Scarlatti sonatas, Handel's "Water Music", Brandenberg's "Concerto no 4 in G Major" and Monteverdi's "Domine Ad Adjuvandum". LP, Vinyl record album

Drums galore from the great Sandy Nelson – an artist who was one of the most hard-burning talents on the kit, back in the day – with a propulsive quality that makes a record like this take off right from the very first note! As with so many of Sandy's instrumental classics from back in the day, there's no record of the players on the date – but they've got to be some of LA's top-level studio talents, as there's some excellent saxophone solos on the set – and some especially great guitar! At a time when guitar-heavy instrumental rock albums were king, Sandy managed to bring the drums center stage – while still also holding onto the kinds of sounds you'd love from those groups too – all arranged by Rene Hall with a mighty sharp groove. Titles include "Drums A Go Go", "Whittier Blvd", "Do The Boomerang", "Soul Drums", "The Clapping Song", "Boot Leg", and "Casbah". (Rock, Now Sound) CD
