Laurindo AlmeidaGuitar From Ipanema ... LP
Capitol, 1964. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Breezy bossa nova – Hollywood 60s style! The album's one of the best cut for Capitol by guitarist Laurindo Almeida – and has a sweet groovy little style that features Laurindo's lovely guitar work over some lightly dancing small combo backings that include flute, harmonica, organ, percussion, and even a bit of whistling on a few tracks! The vibe's very much in the best Verve/Impulse takes on the bossa – done with a clear California influence, which keeps things cool and breezy – and which also pushes Almeida past his sometimes-staid style on guitar. Two cuts also feature some great vocals by Irene Kral – and titles include "Twilight In Rio", "Old Guitaron", "Sarah's Samba", "Izabella", "Winter Moon", "Girl From Ipanema", and "Choro For People In Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo rainbow label pressing.)

Les BaxterSacred Idol ... LP
Capitol, 1960. Near Mint- ... $43.99 49.99
A real standout set from the end of Les Baxter's run at Capitol Records – originally scored for a film that was never released, but a great set of tracks that more than stands strongly on its own! The theme here is a Mexican/Latin American one – explored by Baxter with his trademark blend of larger orchestrations and lighter exotica touches – often swirling around in an extremely evocative mode that makes us wish the film had been issued to the public, and at a few key moments even hinting at the funkier modes that would follow on some of Les' later work for other labels. Titles include "Aqueducts", "Gardens Of The Moon", "Pyramid Of The Sun", "Temple Of Gold", and "Procession Of The Princes". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original rainbow label stereo pressing. Includes the Capitol Full Dimensional Stereo inner sleeve, with some aging a bit of pen. Cover has light aging, some ringwear in back, and small seam splits.)

Jackie GleasonMovie Themes For Lovers Only ... LP
Capitol, 1963. Sealed ... $4.99
Movie Themes For Lovers Only is a great one – a set that takes some of the best film themes of the early 60s, and turns them into great vehicles for that mellow Gleason sound – that warm mix of orchestrations and some very light jazz touches – heard here on solos from Charlie Ventura on trumpet and Pee Wee Erwin on tenor. That Gleason touch is impeccable, as always – and titles include "My Romance", "La Dolce Vita", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "The Man That Got Away", and "Lawrence Of Arabia". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing, still sealed. Shrink has light wear.)

Jackie GleasonNow Sound – For Today's Lovers ... LP
Capitol, 1969. Very Good+ ... $2.99
A record that's definitely after our own heart – in case you couldn't tell from the title! The set has Jackie Gleason expanding his bag a bit for the late 60s – moving from the easy sound to the "Now Sound" – with the help of some cool electric sitar, pictured on the front of the set – and other hip instrumentation from Tom Scott on flutes, Milt Holland on tabla, and Emil Richards on a range of exotic percussion! The album's as totally wild and exotic as similar efforts on Impulse or Verve, but the record's still a great batch of "establishment hip" instrumentals – which shows Jackie trying to get a little hip for the times. George Williams handles arrangements, still with lots of the trademark Gleason strings – and titles include "Live For Life", "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You", "It Must Be Him", and "I Won't Cry Anymore". LP, Vinyl record album
(Rainbow label stereo pressing.)

Jackie GleasonTaste Of Brass – For Lovers Only ... LP
Capitol, 1967. Sealed ... $9.99
An incredibly groovy album from Jackie Gleason from the mid 60 – with a sound that's a lot hipper than you'd expect from the "brass" in the title! Jackie's working here with an electric bass at the bottom of the band – providing a nice bouncing rhythm that makes the tunes dance nicely, stepping out in a 60s easy mode that has a lilt at the bottom that makes for a lot more play at the top. 11 tracks in all – with titles that include "The Art Of Love", "My Love For Carmen", "A Taste Of Honey", "Mame", "La Terre", "Call Me", "Love Is Here to Stay", "It All Depends On You" and a great version of Galt MacDermot's "African Waltz"! Vincent PriceWitchcraft & Magic – An Adventure In Demonology ... LP
Capitol, Early 70s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $59.99 69.99
If you've ever doubted that Vincent Price was a creepy guy, you've got to hear this album! The 2LP set is a mad exploration into the world of the supernatural – with Vincent speaking on topics that include "Witch Tortures", "How To Communicate With The Spirits", "The Magic Bloodstone", "Instruments Of Magic", "Witch Burning", and "How To Make A Pact With The Devil". The script was written by Terry D'Oberoff, with electronics by Douglas Leedy – but it's Price who makes the whole thing really work, reading in a dark, spooky tone, set in a really echoey space – really making us believe that he knows all about this weird stuff! (Spoken Word, Now Sound) LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light surface wear and a small split on one corner.)

✨✧ Johnny RichardsExperiments In Sound ... LP
Capitol, 1958. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Wonderful stuff from one of the most overlooked arrangers of the 50s! Richards was Stan Kenton's right hand man at one time – and he's got a style that mixes jazz and modernism in the same style as Pete Rugolo, but with a bit more of a commitment to swinging. This rare 1958 set for Capitol is less experimental than the title might make you think – but the jazz is infused with plenty of freshness, and the whole thing's packaged in a really wonderful abstract cover! Players include Gene Quill, Ray Copeland, Frank Socolow, and Julius Watkins – and titles include "Terpischore", "Neolore", "This Time", and "Omo Ado". (Jazz, Now Sound) LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono rainbow label pressing. Cover has some ringwear and yellowed tape at the seams.)

Paul SmithCascades – New Liquid Sounds ... LP
Capitol, 1954. Very Good+ ... $5.99 7.99
Some sweet Liquid Sounds from pianist Paul Smith – one of the grooviest players to recorded for Capitol Records in the 50s! At some level, Smith has a sound that really prefaces lots that would go on in the west coast scene of the 60s – an approach to jazz that's still somewhat composed, but which has a breezier feel than most of the other players of his time – openly swinging with a lightness that's mighty nice, in ways that never get too stiff or stodgy. Think of this one as a precursor to Verve Records grooves from a decade later – and you'll see what we man – as Paul's piano moves nicely with guitar from Tony Rizzi, flute from Julie Kinsler, alto from Ronny Lang, and clarinet from Abe Most and Willie Schwartz. Titles include "Little Slam", "The Gnat", "Betsy Moo", "No Trump", and "Why Shouldn't I". (Jazz, Now Sound) LP, Vinyl record album
(Original turquoise label pressing. Cover has surface wear.)

Paul SmithDelicate Jazz ... LP
Capitol, 1957. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Lovely music from pianist Paul Smith – working here on one of his most standout sessions of the 50s, thanks to the presence of horn players Bob Cooper on tenor and Julie Kinsler on flute! The style is still very much in the same fluid area as Paul's Liquid Sounds work for Capitol – but the addition of the tenor and flute really fleshes things out nicely, and gives the record a sparkling sound that's mighty nice – almost more 60s swinging in its conception at times, especially given the guitar work by Toni Rizzi! In addition to Smith's piano, the group also features bass by Joe Mondragon and drums by Stan Levey – and titles include "Chicken Wings", "Gisele", "Cookie Time", "But Not For Me", "Fine & Dandy", "Lady In Red", and "Love Walked In". (Jazz, Now Sound) LP, Vinyl record album
(Turquoise label pressing. Cover has light wear and aging.)

Yma SumacVoice Of The Xtabay (10-inch) ... LP
Capitol, 1950. Very Good ... $9.99
Legendary vocal work from the postwar years – some of the earliest recordings from the enigmatic Yma Sumac – an artist whose records really laid the groundwork for an entire generation of exotica records to come! Sumac's authenticity has been debated over the years – but there's no denying that she's got this incredible vocal range – a many-octave approach that almost makes her sound like a human theremin – as she works with exotic backings from Les Baxter to offer up a take on Peruvian roots, styled towards a 50s bachelor pad listener! Titles include "Xtaby", "Wayra", "Taita Inty", "Monos", and "Tumpa". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono purple label pressing with deep groove. Cover has light surface wear and aging, some edge wear, and some writing in pen and a small tear at the opening in back.)

✨✧ Pat WilliamsThreshold ... LP
Capitol, 1973. Very Good+ ... $3.99
Nice stuff from Pat Williams! Although known for mostly groovy 60s stuff (ala his legendary Verve and soundtrack work), this album features Williams hitting more of a 70s jazz funk groove, with a nice electric edge. The tracks are long, and the solos are played by Tom Scott and Marvin Stamm (mostly) – and the rest of the group includes Mike Melvoin on keyboards, John Guerin on drums, and Larry Bunker on percussion. Cuts include "And on the Sixth Day", "The Witch", and "Mr. Smoke". (Jazz, Now Sound) LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a spot of wear at the bottom, but is nice overall!)

✨✧ Jackie GleasonMusic To Change Her Mind ... LP
Capitol, 1956. Sealed ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The album's one of Jackie Gleason's finest – and a perfect demonstration of the lush, romantic backings that he did so well for Capitol during the decade – an approach that was very much in direct contrast to Gleason's pyrotechnic personality in TV comedies, but which was a surprisingly good fit for the late nite, booze-heavy antics of Jackie in real life. There's a sense of loss and longing here that few other arrangers at the time could duplicate – and while the album's clearly poised to be a tool in the act of seduction, it's got an emotional depth that might actually have your potential conquest running home with memories of sadness past flooding her mind – not actually coming across with the goods! Titles include "You're My Greatest Love", "It's The Talk Of The Town", "She's Funny That Way", "Coquette", "Did I Remember", "Dancing In The Dark", and "You & The Night & The Music". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing – W 632 – still sealed with fairly large sticker remnants. Cover has light seepage stain at the bottom.)

✨✧ David McCallum (with David Axelrod)Music – A Part Of Me ... LP
Capitol, 1966. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first album that Man From UNCLE David McCallum cut for Capitol – a batch of instrumental tunes that was really masterminded by arranger HB Barnum and producer David Axelrod! The record features short groovy versions of mid 60s pop tunes, plus a few instrumentals by McCallum, Barnum, and Axelrod – all done in a way that's half jaunty, and half tinged with the darkness of Axelrod's later work for Capitol. Titles include "The Sugar Cane", "Insomina", "The Far Side Of The Moon", "Louise", "Downtown", "Turn Turn Turn", and "123". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo rainbow label pressing. Cover has a center split on the bottom seam.)

Les Baxter & 101 StringsLatin Holiday (aka Que Mango) ... LP
Alshire, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $13.99
A repackaged version of the album Que Mango – a later album, but one that still features Les doing some great Latiny bits – heading up the 101 Strings ensemble, for a sweeping and groovy kind of sound! The whole album's very similar to some of Les' Capitol work from the early 60s, but has a slightly more modern twist – including the use of electric bass underneath the arrangements, which creates a really nice gently loping groove! One of Les' best – despite the late date – and with tracks that include "Jungle Montuno", "Que Mango", "Bocha Chica", "Affair In Aruba", and "Tropicando". Very groovy, baby! LP, Vinyl record album
(Quad-Spectrum pressing. Cover has some ring and edge wear.)

Yma SumacMiracles ... LP
London, 1971. Near Mint- ... $36.99 48.99
Fantastic! This is Yma Sumac's rock album from the early 70's – and it's got a wild sound that's totally different from any of her work at Capitol! The record includes lots of electric instrumentation, and Yma's voice moves from the exotic to the psychedelic, as she sings along with some great organ/guitar small group backing produced by Les Baxter. Sounds weird at first, but it's great, and almost a bit funky! Titles include "Zebra", "El Condor Pasa", "Tree Of Life", "Flame Tree", "Looke Around", and "Let Me Hear You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original US pressing – sealed!)
