A very cool early set from CTI Records – one that has funky arranger Artie Butler playing piano and ondioline with a host of great jazz players – including Herbie Hancock on piano, David Carey on vibes, Jerome Richardson on flute, Romeo Penque on flute and soprano, Vince Bell on guitar, and Eddie Bert on trombone! The whole thing has that perfect blend of easy scoring and funky jazz that you find on the best early A&M/CTI albums – and it includes lots of nice cuts like "The Loop", "Max's Brazilian What", "In The Heat Of The Night", and "Music for Night People". The legendary alto saxophonist Paul Desmond serves up his own versions of key tunes by Simon & Garfunkel – with results that are simply amazing, and very different than the originals! The style here takes all the airy brilliance of the original S&G tunes, and turns it towards a more jazz-based mode – one that has some of the slight Brazilian undercurrents in the rhythms that you'll find on Desmond's previous two albums for CTI! The full arrangements are by Don Sebesky, who brings a great sense of balance to the set – and Herbie Hancock plays some great electric piano, in a group that also features Airto on percussion and Gene Bertoncini on guitar. But the real star of the set is Paul Desmond – blowing with that amazing tone of his – and sliding from tune to tune with effortless ease, in a way that really transforms these tunes in their instrumental readings. One of the coolest records ever from James Last – a mid 70s American session, done with styles that are a fair bit different than his other work! Unlike the brassy, bouncing styles of Last's previous records, this one's nicely funky, soulful, and almost a bit laidback at times – filled with great keyboard lines from Larry Muhoberac, who also helped arranged the album with Last and Wes Farrell. The sound is great all the way through – sounding much more like a Kudu/CTI sort of session than Last's European dates on Polydor – and there's a nice jazz component to the music too, thanks to contributions from Ernie Watts on sax, Tom Scott on flute, and Bobby Bryant on trumpet. Titles include the great mellow groover "I Can't Move No Mountains", plus "Love For Sale", "Question", "Theme From Prisoner Of Second Avenue", "Jubilation", and "Summertime". LP, Vinyl record album
