✨✧ VariousAlex Attias Presents The Chromatic Universe ... CD
Visions (UK), 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful collection of work by Alex Attias – pulled from a variety of collaborative projects over the past few years, most of which were instantly "lost" on hard to find singles and obscure import titles. As a whole, the album stands as one of the best introductions to Alex's groundbreaking work you'll ever find – and in a way, it's more of a cohesive album, featuring the full scope of his talents expressed in the company of a variety of like-minded talents. Cosmic, soaring, spiritual, and wonderful – with tracks that include "Sunrays" by Vanessa Freeman, "Waenda" by Emelda, "Sarasowju (Nu mix)" by Plutonia, "Cascade (Nu mix)" by Idema & Co, "Daylight" by Xela Saitta, "Desert Vinyl (rude dub)" by Son Of Scientist, and "Willo The Wisp" by Pavel Kostiuk. 12 tracks in all. ✨✧ Chari ChariSpring To Summer ... CD
Ultima (Portugal), 2004. Used ... Out Of Stock
Organic atmospherics from Chari Chari – work done in a style that seems to make it rise from the earth of its own accord! The "bottom" of the record is more pronounced than in other Chari Chari work – slightly more beat-conscious, but still in a way that's mostly concerned with the feeling of the "top" – the magical, mystical sounds that float and simmer around the record – emerging from the mist with a feel that's both moody and spacey. Titles include "Across The Universe", "Ti Burung", "Solar Pass", "Spring Ocean", "Flow Dub Outta Borneo", "Enter The Metal Circle", and "Life In Flow Motion". CD

✨✧ Comet Is ComingTrust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery ... LP
Impulse, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. Titles include "Birth Of Creation", "Summon The Fire", "Blood Of The Past", "Astral Flying", "Super Zodiac", "The Universe Wakes Up", and "Timewave Zero". (Jazz, New Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Masa SextetDeep Cover (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Village Again (Japan), 2010. Used ... Out Of Stock
A pretty incredible set from sax player Masato Nakamura, aka Masa – late of the trailblazing Japanese jazzy explorers Sleep Walker – here leading a new combo and some fellow Sleep Walker alum on a set of cover tunes selected by some of his (and some of our) favorite modern groove figures! The group brings fresh jazzy life a batch of all great tunes by Yusef Lateef, Julius Hemphill, Mary Parks (and Albert Ayler), Milton Nascimento and others. Beautiful stuff with timeless soul jazz inspiration – here's hoping Deep Cover isn't simply a one off project and we'll hear much more from Masa Sextet! Song selectors include Kyoto Jazz Massive, Patrick Forge (who also produces the album), Yoshihiro Okino of Kyoto Jazz Massive, Dilip Harris of Two Banks Of Four, Jurgen V Knoblauch of Jazzanova, Shuya Okino of Kyoto Jazz Massive and Gilles Peterson. Many of the numbers skew to the long side, with 7 great tracks the run a total of 55 minutes. Includes "Waiting For Marvin", "Look Into Tomorrow" and "Healing Is The Healing Force Of The Universe" (both with vocals by Bembe Segue), "Winds Of Change", "The Hard Blues", "Nem Premisou Mais Um Sol", and "Before Dawn". ✨✧ Daniel MaunickMacumba Quebrada ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first-ever full length set we've seen from Daniel Maunick – an artist who you might know from his remix work as Venom, or for his ties to the Incognito universe – given that Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick is his father! Yet the sound here is definitely Daniel's own – rootsier than some of his remix work, but with the feature future-sounding elements of those tracks too – almost a globe's worth of sonic elements, fused with more contemporary keyboards and beats – providing a great bridge between some of the 12" releases of the Far Out label, and directions they might take in the future. The percussion on some tracks is especially nice – and maybe ties Daniel's music to some of the global house currents at the start of this century – on titles that include "Sombra Do Dragao", "Until The End", "A Vicious Circle", "One Nite Stand", "Red Doves", "Orbitus", "As Light Fades", and "Amnesia Haze". ✨✧ Menahan Street BandMake The Road By Walking ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2008. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A bold slice of work from the Daptone musical universe – a hip project that features work from members of The Dap Kings, El Michels Affair, Budos Band, and Antibalas – all put together with a range of sounds that really show the full spectrum of their styles! The groove's quite unique – even for the ultra-cool Daptone scene – as Menahan Street Band bring in bits of dub, funk, Latin, and Afro-styled sounds to their music – often working with a sense of spareness that seems influenced by 70s Ethiopia, but which comes off with a heavier Wu-inspired sound! There's no vocals at all – just really raw, stark instrumental bits – played on vibes, organ, tenor, flute, piano, trumpet, and some kickass percussion – produced with just the right sort of grit to make all tunes sound great. Titles include "Tired Of Fighting", "Home Again", "Montego Sunset", "The Traitor", "The Contendor", "Birds", "Esma", and "Going The Distance". (Deep Funk, New Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Monday MichiruDon't Disturb This Groove (2024 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Grand Gallery (Japan), 2011. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great one from Monday Michiru – sweet, soulful, and totally right on the money! The set's almost a return to the warm soul territory that first won us over in Monday's work from the 90s – as she takes on a whole host of older American soul tunes by Stevie Wonder, Teena Marie, and others – sung with a wonderfully mature vocal approach, and set to jazzy backings that really help change things up – and make the record way more than just a simple set of cover versions! There's a great blend here – the instrumental depth that Monday's shown in recent recordings, and the straightforward soul of the early years – all handled with just the right production balance to make it come off perfectly. Titles include "Best Of My Love", "Um Amigo", "I Can't Help It", "Ooh La La La", "Don't Disturb This Groove", "You Are The Universe", and "As". (Neo Soul, New Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Alice RussellPot Of Gold Remixes ... CD
Little Poppet, 2009. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Alice Russell's neo classic funk soul style gets the remix treatment – a sprawling 2CD set with remixes by DJ Vadim, Mr Scruff, Kid Gusto, Clonious, J-Boogie, Shawn Lee, Ohmega Watts, Ticklah, The Heavy, DJ Day & Clutchy Hopkins, Yellowtail and others! Alice Russell is a surprising choice for this kind of remix project, given the depth of reverent soul in her voice, and the general old school modeled songs, but she's in the hands of producers who know how to craft a timeless club groove without sacrificing the soul – keeping the original integrity of the tunes in place while putting their personal stamp on the groove. 22 tracks on 2CDs: "Let us Be Loving" (Kidkanevil rmix), "Got The Hunger?" (DJ Vadim rmx), "All Alone" (Mocean Worker rmx), "Lights Went Out" (LJM rmx), "Two Steps" (Shawn Lee's 7 Inches Of Soul rmx), "All Alone" (DJ Day Meets Clutchy Hopkins remx., "Universe" (GRC's Quiet Carnival mix) and more. ✨✧ Thievery CorporationCosmic Game ... CD
ESL, 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
Thievery Corporation are back after a long hiatus – and they've returned to the fold with a host of surprising guest stars! The set's got a really wide range of grooves – as one might expect when the group's working with artists that include David Byrne, Perry Farrell, and The Flaming Lips! But over and above these bigger crossover names, the team's also sticking very true to their roots on other tracks – bringing in some great downtempo and Brazilian influences, and fleshing out tunes with an equally great array of lesser-known talents that includes Sista Pat, Gunjan, Verny Varela, Gigi Rezende, and Patrick De Santos. Titles include "Marching The Hate Machines", "Pela Janela", "Sol Tapado", "The Time We Lost Our Way", "A Gentle Dissolve", "Holographic Universe", "The Heart's A Lonely Hunter", and "The Cosmic Game". A well done survey of the career of Thievery Corporation to date – selected by Rob Garza and Eric Hilton – wonderful stuff from the reigning kings of downtempo jazzy grooves! It's made up of the duo's best known tracks as well as their own personal favorites. You couldn't really ask for a better or more careful curated set! Includes "Amerimacka", "Lebanese Blonde", "Facing East", "Holographic Universe", "Until The Morning", "All That We Perceive", "The Richest Man In Babylon", "The Passing Stars", "Satyam Shivam Sundaram", "Vampires", "Warning Shots", "Shadows Of Ourselves" and more. ✨✧ ThundercatIt Is What It Is ... LP
Brainfeeder, 2020. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous album from Thundercat – an artist who just seems to get better and better with every new record, and who's maybe here defining a genre that's completely unto himself! The record is soulful, and has a lot of contemporary cosmic currents – but it's also more far-reaching and fluid than anything that Thundercat's ever given us before – still done with key help from Flying Lotus, but with a majestic, confident quality that seems to have the duo ready to take over the universe! The airy soulful vocals are great, but the rhythms and instrumentation are maybe even more compelling – as there's a number of tunes here that are almost impossible to describe in words, even though they're instantly appealing and wonderfully soulful – a balance that's the sort of special genius from an artist who's ready to write himself into the pop music history books with a key release like this. There's a whole host of guests – including Ty Dolla Sign, Childish Gambino, Louis Cole, Kamasi Washington, Badbadnotgood, Miguel Atwood Ferguson, and many others – but it's clear that the Thundercat/Flying Lotus axis holds all the power – on titles that include "Fair Chance", "Funny Thing", "How Sway", "Miguel's Happy Dance", "Lost In Space/Great Scott/22-26", "Interstellar Love", "Overseas", "Dragonball Durag", "King Of The Hill", and "Existential Dread". Sohan WilsonLove Is The Key ... LP
Visions (UK), 2022. New Copy ... $13.99 26.99
Two different slices of sound from keyboardist Sohan Wilson – both of them equally great! Side one of the record features a live jazzy combo working with Sohan – creating these cool jazz funk numbers that are steeped in 70s tradition, but which have a very contemporary cosmic vibe – not a rehash of older modes, but really new territory explored by the keys! Side two has more of a clubby vibe – beats, samples, and other elements that are topped with strong keyboard lines of a variety of modes – very 21st century, with some spectacular production on the rhythms – all of which will have us looking for plenty more of Sohan's music in the future! Titles include "Guerrero Eterno", "Feel It", "Hey Girl", "Anthem For The Universe", "All I Want Is Again", "Spring Birds", "Night Sky", and "Childhood Memories". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousTrue Spirit – Compiled By Lofty And Dr. Bob Jones ... CD
Chilli Funk (UK), 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful set of modern club tracks – put together with a real emphasis on soulful grooves! Most of the tracks on the set have a strong deep house vibe going on – with warm instrumentation, soulful vocals, and solid songwriting with a real focus on the feel of the overall track, not just a few effects. This is no surprise, though, as the set's put together by Lofty & Dr Bob Jones, who did such great work with the East West Connection – and the pair of them dipped into a wide range of labels from around the globe, just to come up with the perfect sound. Titles include "I Know A Place (Shades Of Black mix)" by Jaymz Nylon feat Mooney, "Latin Soul (not so Latin Sonic Soul mix)" by Turnstyle Orchestra, "Ain't No Running Away (Ricanstruction voc mix)" by Willie Washington presents Paula Ralph, "Across The Universe (full story version)" by Chari Chari, "Never Lost Faith (original mix)" by UC Heights feat Anthony Flanagan, "Universal (part 2)" by Solar House, "Still Loving You (Jii Hoo mix)" by Midnight City Soul Affair, and "Lost Tribes Of Ibadan (orixas rmx)" by Sfere. 10 tracks in all!
