Universal FunkOne ... CD
April (Denmark), 2003. Used ... $5.99
Beautifully jazzy work from Universal Funk – a real cut above the usual album of this sort! The group's got a great talent for mellow keyboard lines – using wicked electric piano licks to set the stage for the tunes' warm tones and naturally jazzy progressions. The album features some great live work on guitar, trumpet, and percussion – and a few cuts feature vocals by Lena Sandberg, a wonderful singer with a style that adds in a nice degree of soul to the set! Really great stuff – and right up there with our favorite European work of the past 5 years! Titles include "Smokin Love", "Could I", "Step Off", "Don't Take All", "Rain", "Trains & Planes", and "Kuta". CD

BBE (UK), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic 500th release by the BBE label – one that looks back at the past, and soars to the future! This special extended single package is a fantastic return to form for everyone involved – as underground club legends Patrick Adams and Leroy Burgess get a whole new groove from Louie Vega – but with a warmly soaring vibe that's a great update of their classic approach! "Barely Breaking Even" is a classic from the Universal Robot Band – but this new take has both vocals and production that are a lot warmer than the original P&P Records version – and a groove that's even catchier too! All four mixes are over eight minutes long – served up here beautifully on a double 12" package! (Soul, New Grooves) 12-inch, Vinyl record

Sidsel EndresenUndertow ... CD
Jazzland/Universal, 2001. Used ... $6.99
New work from Sidsel Endresen – one of the compelling Norewegian artists currently part of the Jazzland underground future of electronic jazz! Sidsel's one of the few singers to emerge from the scene – and he's got a spare breathy voice that's halfway between Bjork and Jay Jay Johansson – singing in English, but slightly off-kilter because of his accent, and the way the vocals are layered amidst moody electronics and soundscapey backdrops. Music on the album is created with help from Bugge Wesseltoft, Nils Petter Molvaer, and Roger Ludvigsen – and titles include "Angel", "Undertow", "You Cover Time", "Travelling Still", and "Blessed Instant". ✨✧ Salif KeitaMoffou – Remixed ... CD
Universal, 2004. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the best globally-conscious groove sets we've heard in a while – a project that features remixes of Salif Keita's Mouffou album! The album's done in a spirit that's similar to the Femi Kuti remix project of a few years back – but it really departs from that one in terms of sound, largely because Keita's music is freer, more open, and filled with a myriad of interesting elements to expand and experiment with! The grooves get pretty abstract at times, but never so much so that they disrespect the source of the work – and the overall feel is kind of a mellower take on the sound of cross-cultural experiments from Osunlade, Jephte Guillaume, and other current acts on the New York scene. Titles on the set include "Madan" remixed by Gekko, "Madan (Days Of Holly Salif mix)" by Tim Paris, "Madan (No Traitorz rmx)" by The Boldz, "Moussoulou" remixed by Charles Webster, "Moussoulou (Yoruba Soul mix)" by Osunlade, "Moussoulou" remixed by Ark, "Here" remixed by Frederic Galliano, "Here" remixed by Doctor L, "Ana Na Ming" remixed by LA Funk Mob, "Souvent (Hyper Preacher mix)" remixed by B Alone, and "Yamore" remixed by Luciano. Soul Source ProductionStandard ... CD
Universal (Japan), 2007. Used ... $16.99
The standard here is pretty darn high – a wonderful batch of club tracks from Soul Source Production, aka Kenichi Yanai – done with help from Monday Michiru, Dimitri From Paris, Epo, and others! As with other Soul Source work, the spirit here is highly collaborative – a mood that shifts nicely from track to track, depending on the guest star, and their particular strengths. Rhythms are mostly in the soulful house side of the spectrum, but the instrumentation often has some warmer touches too – and there's also a few tracks here by other artists, redone in Soul Source versions. Titles include the Soul Source tracks "Down Town", "Shooting Star", "The Real Thing (Soul Source Production natural mix)", "What You Want", "Busy (Yannah rmx)", and "Place" – plus "Work To Do (Soul Source mix)" by Average White Band, "Eastern Soul (Soul Source mix)" by Nu Tropic, "Feelin Blue (Quiet Lakeside mix)" by Earth Wind & Fire with Soul Source Production, and "Saturday In The Park" by Sofa King. Soul Source Production (Kenichi Yanai)He Knows His Place ... CD
Universal (Japan), 2006. Used ... $19.99
A great full-length set from Kenichi Yanai – an artist we've known from his many remixes and compilations under the Soul Source Productions banner – stepping out here (almost) as an artist on his own! The album's a buoyant batch of Japanese soul that resonates strongly with the previous Soul Source groove – a mix of soulful house, jazzy club, and a few mellower tracks that round out the record nicely – giving the whole thing a depth that goes way beyond previous Soul Source remixes, a maturity and sense of cohesion we really didn't expect! Guests include Monday Michiru, Yannah Valdevit, Rasmus Faber, Captain G, and Ollie – and titles include a great remake of Stevie Wonder's "The Real Thing", plus "Betty", "Inside Outside", "Busy", "Up For More", "Growing", "Floating Day", "Snowflakes", "In My Sleep", and "Mind Be Free". Universal (Japan), 1990s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible trip through the classic catalog of one of the most influential Japanese groups of the past 20 years – United Future Organization, a trio whose jazz-based grooves touched a chord with listeners around the globe! This 3CD series brings back a huge amount of lost grooves from UFO albums and singles of the 1990s – including a good number of remixes, which were often even better representations of their style than the original tunes! There's plenty of niceness in every single volume – and tracks on this third one include "Make A Good Beginning (with Cleveland Watkiss)", "Future Light (featuring Mark Murphy)", "I'll Be You Thought I'd Never Find You (acapella)", "Moondance (in session)", "Moondance (Unkle rmx)", "Planet Plan (Carl Craig rmx)", "Somewhere", "Cosmic Gypsy", "He Whistled The Tune", and "Pilgrims". ✨✧ Bugge Wesseltoft (New Conception Of Jazz)Moving ... CD
Jazzland/Universal (UK), 2001. Used ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the best album so far by this groundbreaking Norweigian keyboardist! Bugge plays Fender Rhodes and grand piano on the set – and it's a warm batch of uptempo tracks that push the envelope a lot further than some of his previous work, sort of a mix of jazzy house and ECM-ish soundscapes, wrapped up in an icily clean style of production that really makes the set sparkle with the "new conception" that's promised in the title! Tracks include "Moving", "Yellow Is The Color", "Lone", "Heim", and "Gare Du Nord". CD

✨✧ Wonk/MelrawMonk's Playhouse EP – Cyberspace Love/Think Of One (Japanese Record Day release) ... 7-inch
Blue Note/Universal (Japan), 2018. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
A wonderful reimagining of the music of Thelonious Monk – one that's done in a melange of jazz and contemporary elements – in a style that's very similar to the time that Madlib visited Blue Note over a decade ago! As with that set, there's a real 21st Century vibe here – a completely new take on Monk's music – as some tracks are played live, others are sampled, and production often includes a fair bit of hip hop elements, especially beats – woven together wonderfully with the tunes. Styles vary nicely, given the different artists participating in the project – and this limited EP features the tracks "Cyberspace Love" by Wonk and "Think Of One" by Melraw with Sara Yoshida from Mononkul. Universal (Germany), 2002. Used ... $11.99
The funky sounds of the Mojo Club scene – all modern, and all electric, and a nice counterpoint to that club's famous compilations of older jazz and soul work. The set keeps the cross-genre spirit of the Mojo scene going nicely – blending older jazz, Latin, and soul influences into newer grooves that range with some of the cream of the current overseas underground. The set includes a few familiar numbers, and plenty more hard to find singles – a great track list of 15 cuts in all, with titles that include "Jazzcapade (Crystal Cru rmx)" by Dj Matt, "Signs (Dom T rmx)" by Badmarsh & Shri, "In The Morningtime" by Urbs & Cutex, "Speak Softly" by James Hardway, "Ignorant People" by Robyn Rhodes, "Someday (Phuturistic rmx)" by The Beard featuring Kamini, "Close" by Sci-Clone, "The Drume" by Nordstat Union, "Superpro Kid" by Sie, and "Come With Me" by Audiomontage. Mario BiondiSun (Italian pressing) ... CD
Sony (Italy), 2013. Used ... $9.99
The sun shines brightly on Mario Biondi – really making this record sparkle with a charm that goes way beyond Mario's previous albums – a quality that's less retro than before, and which shows Biondi as a growing soul star with really universal appeal! There's still some of the old school jazz in the mix that we love from Mario's Schema work – but the album's also got a fuller production style at times, one that really expands the palette of Biondi's colors, and which has him working here with help from key guests who include Omar, Leon Ware, Al Jarreau, Incognito, and Chaka Khan – and even a bit of organ from the James Taylor Quartet! Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick helped co-write a good number of tracks on the set – and titles include "Shine On", "Come To Me", "Woman Woman", "What Have You Done To Me", "Never Stop", "La Voglia La Pazzia L'Idea", "Girl Blue", "Light To The World", and "Catch The Sunrise". CD has a great package – hardcover book-style, with pages inside! CD

A wonderful selection of grooves from the hands of Bob Jones and Lofty – the two leading lights of London's all-great Chillifunk label! The set brings together some of Jones and Lofty's best production efforts – including a lot of singles that have slid out of circulation, and a heck of a lot of tracks that are showing up on CD here for the first time. The groove is soulful house, often augmented by deeply soulful vocals – and tracks include "Feel Love" by Ultra Nate, "Unfinished Business" by Notenshun, "Phoenix Rising" by Universal Jones, "It's About Time" by The Interns with Snowboy, "Cantina" by Notenshun, "High On Life" by East West Connection with Daniel Vacchio, "Chilli In Rio" by Notenshun, and "Photographs (EWC rmx)" by Jody Watley. ✨✧ Timo LassyBig Brass – Live At Savoy Theatre Helsinki ... CD
MustHaveJazz/Membran (Finland), 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A gem of a record from Finnish saxophonist Timo Lassy – a straight jazz set that reunites him with members of the Ricky Tick Big Band – including some of the musicians who first made big waves with Timo on record in the early part of this century! Lassy's at his best here – really creative as a soloist, and dropping some of the more groove-oriented qualities you'd hear on his other records – to work in an array of soulful sounds with a core quintet that includes electric piano, bass, drums, and percussion – augmented by larger horns from the Ricky Tick band, arranged by Valtteri Laurell Poyhonen, and featuring solos from Jukka Eskola and Kalevi Louhivuori on trumpets, and Aaro Huopainen on trombone. The tunes move along with a nice sense of rhythm, but also have all these amazing colors and tones that burst out with a great sense of delight throughout the performance – on titles that include "Teddy The Sweeper", "Waltz Unsolved", "Grande Opening", "Universal Four", "African Rumble", and "Sweet Spot". ✨✧ Timo LassySoul & Jazz Of Timo Lassy ... CD
Ricky Tick (Finland), 2007. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A brilliant full album of work from saxophonist Timo Lassey – one of the standout stars of the Ricky Tick/Five Corners Quintet club jazz scene in Finland – grooving hard here in an excellent combo that's heavy on modal rhythms – all produced to perfection by the amazing Teddy Rok! As with other Ricky Tick work, there's an instant classic groove going on here – a re-awakening of jazz for the groovers – with a depth and strength that easily rivals Blue Note or Prestige in the 60s, but which is almost even better – given the youthful freshness of the tunes and players. Lassy plays tenor, baritone, and flute – and other players include Jukka Eskola on trumpet, Mikko Mustonen on trombone, Georgios Kontrafouris on piano, Antti Lotjonen on bass, and Teppo Makynen on drums, percussion, and vibes. Titles are all originals – and include "Early Move", "Love Moan", "African Rumble", "Live At The Timber Yard", "Universal Four", and "Weldon". CD

QwestlifeProphecy ... LP
Glitterbox, 2020. New Copy 2LP ... $28.99
That's a retro-styled logo on the cover, and it really gets at the spirit of the sound that Qwestlife is laying down – a mode that hearkens back to 70s club, but which also understands the warmer side of house music too – served up in a blend that reminds us of the early years of Incognito, and maybe some of the best from Joey Negro and the Sunburst Band! One track has more of an old school hip hop vibe – but that's OK with us, as it features guest work from Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Melle Mel, and Scorpio – and most of the rest are slamming club bangers, done with a very soulful groove – on titles that include "Don't Break My Heart", "Can't Stop (boogie mix)", "Hit It Off (disco soul version)", "Cut You Loose", "Give Me A Minute", "Shooting Star", "Universal Soldier", and "What You Like". Afro rhythms mix with modern beats – but in a way that's really fresh, and never cliched – all centered around the wonderful vocals of Daulne, who makes some incredible sounds with her voice!
