Amp Fiddler/Amp Dog KnightsKeep Coming (Jayda G rmx, Jahn Cloud & Meftah rmx, Julian Dyne rmx, Brenk Sinatra rmx) ... 12-inch
Mahogani, 2019. New Copy ... $7.99 18.98
A mighty soulful groove from Amp Fiddler – one that's maybe even more classic than his classic work – and that's really saying a lot! The Jayda G remix begins with just vocals and really spare Fender Rhodes – a stripped-down cut that kicks up the beat only when it's nice and ready – and bursts with fantastic energy throughout! The Jahn Cloud and Meftah remix has beats right at the start, but a beautiful warm glow throughout – and Julian Dyne has maybe a harder groove, but even more keyboard interplay – leaving Brenk Sinatra to maybe slow things down a bit, with wicked vocal inflections next to moogy keyboards! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Brand New HeaviesTBNH ... LP
Acid Jazz (UK), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 25.98
Excellent work from The Brand New Heavies – one of those groups that made us first want to get into the record store business many years ago! The passage of time hasn't dimmed their genius at all – and right as at the start, the music here is flowing with classic funk and soul influences, but leaned up into a groove that's very contemporary – and which continues to stand head and shoulders above the generations of artists who've been inspired by their sound! As you might notice by the cover, the core duo of Simon Bartholomew and Andrew Levy are the key force of the sound – but their longtime partner N'Dea Davenport is on vocals for many tracks on the set – replaced at a few points by guests who include Laville, Angie Stone, Angela Ricci, Beverley Knight, and Siedah Garrett – a nicely shifting lineup that almost give the record the variety of a classic Incognito set. Titles include "Stupid Love", "Just Believe In You", "Get On The Right Side", "Little Dancer", "It's My Destiny", "Getaway", "Beautiful", "Wired Up", "Together", and "Dontchawanna". DJ KawasakiYou Can Make It ... CD
Columbia (Japan), 2007. Used ... $19.99
A smoking little set from one of the most soulful talents on the Japanese club scene – the mighty DJ Kawasaki, who seems to be breathing new life into international house music with tremendous efforts like this! The feel here is totally great – soaring, joyful, and totally filled with live, love, and energy – none of the clunky beats of the too-experimental crowds, or the fake soul that's been seeping into New York or London work of late – just right-on-the-money groovers, served up with an instant-classic sort of sound! Lyrics are all in English – and sung by a host of guests who include Gordon Chambers, Lena Fujii, Karin, Tasita D'Mour, and Heather Johnson – and a few tracks are instrumental, to further show Kawasaki's talents with a warmly soulful groove on his own. Titles include "Cosmic Lullaby", "Elevate Your Mind", "You Can Make It", "Because Of You", "Planetary Track", "So Far Away", "It Makes Me Feel Like Dancin", and "Bright Like Light". CD

A great collection of work from one of our favorite side of the many talents of DJ Cam – his Quartet material, which is a more jazz-based take on the hip hop modes of his early days! Right from the start, Cam had a great ear for a classic groove – and here, he takes on a set of classics from the 70s, but set to his own beats and scratches, mixed with work on keyboards from Eric Legnini, trumpet from Alex Tassel, and guitar from Christian Brun! There's a bit of vocals on the record from Inlove, but most of the tracks are instrumental – and titles include "Think Twice", "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", "So What", "Montara", "Rebirth Of Cool", "You've Got To Have Freedom", and "Little Sunflower". Dining Rooms with Sean MartinWhen You Died (original, Massimo Martellotta rmx) ... 7-inch
Schema (Italy), 2020. New Copy (pic cover)... $6.99
Sean Martin provides some great lead vocals on this slinky groove from The Dining Rooms – a tune that's got riffing guitar nestled right down in the rhythms, and a fuller, funkier feel as things move on! The remix on the flip really changes things up nicely – dropping the guitar for a more 80s-styled bassline that's also peppered with plenty of warm keys – an equally great setting for Martin's vocals! Liquid LoopReset ... CD
Perfect Toy (Germany), 2005. Used ... $3.99
Don't pass these guys up – because they're a really great little group – especially if you enjoy the jazzy soul of some of the recent releases on Sonar Kollektiv! Like the best SK groups, these guys work in a mode that combines soulful vocals, jazzy riffing, and a bit of electronics into a cosmic 21st Century groove – one that's surprisingly organic, and which features a fair bit of live instrumentation on the set – blending together electric keys and reeds, in a mode that gives the record plenty of nice 70s touches! There's a depth here that we really appreciate – and we'd rank this one right up there with work by Georg Levin, Benny Sings, and maybe even Deyampert! Titles include "Sky Bird", "Loading", "Nu Words", "Beautiful Giants", "Crazy Baby", "Reset", "Mrs McCoy", and "Silverstar". CD

Marcio LocalMarcio Local Says Don Day Don Dree Don Don – Adventures In Samba Soul ... CD
Luaka Bop, 2009. Used ... $3.99
A killer set that really lives up to the Samba Soul promised in the title – recorded recently by Marcio Local, but done with a solid 70s groove that takes us back to the Jorge Ben generation! The production here is perfect – never too polished, and always with a bit of grit in the grooves – so that the record feels more old-school funky than a current album trying to be retro – lots of great drums underneath keyboards, riffing guitar, and Local's raspily soulful vocals! The whole thing's pretty darn great – easily the best Luaka Bop album we've heard in ages – and it's a modern bit of samba soul we'd rank right up there with Seu Jorge's Carolina album. Titles include "Samba Sem Nenhum Problema", "Preta Luxo", "Minha Rosa", "Resgate", "Quem Pode Pode", "Sentimento Rei", "Happy Endings" by Soul Do Samba, and "Represento". (Brazil, New Grooves) CD

Brownswood (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A lucky number 13 for the Brownswood Bubblers series – a great reminder that the compilation is still one of the best places we know for getting turned onto new music from the global underground! And by that, we don't mean the lame dance music "underground" of more than a decade ago – where this week's big track would go stale by the next. Instead, this territory is much richer – plumbed by DJ Gilles Peterson via his Worldwide Radio series, and the always-great work of the Brownswood label – an imprint that's dedicated to finding the best sort of genre-crossing, category-defying music we've always loved here at Dusty Groove! The tracks within are proof that in the right hands, soul, jazz, and other styles know no boundaries – or limits of imagination – on cuts that include "Ley Lines" by Emma Jean Thackray, "Nuketown" by Tiana Khasi, "Something My Heart Trusts" by Yazmin Lacey, "Ideas" by Sonnymoon, "No White God" by Oscar #Worldpeace, "Move" by Lynda Dawn, "Sailor" by Wu Lu feat Binisa Bonner, "Only Trying 2 Tell U" by Puma Blue, "Jury Judge Executioner" by Alxnder London, and "Continue The Fun (space version)" by Mauskovic Dance Band. Sublime modern bossa – from one of the best bands of the genre! Soulstance are part of the elite cadre of Italian groups that make up Nicola Conte's Schema label – and they're one of the best discoveries to come out of the Italian groove scene in years. We really dug their first album – and this second album takes things to an even higher level, mixing in a brilliant array of influences that include 60s soundtracks, jazzy bossa, and a keen taste for electric keyboards and acoustic percussion. And if all that sounds like a million remix projects that are on the market, forget about it – and put this one to the top of the list, because that's where it deserves to be! Right up there with Conte's excellent Jet Sounds album – and filled with great grooves like "Kickin Samba", "Grasping", "Mutantes", "Blue Grassland", "Riding The Mambo", and "Court Intrigues". CD

A really great project from singer David Walters – a set that tries to reimagine a 21st Century creole culture – linking diaspora roots into a new sort of groove, all with plenty of help on production from Bruno Patchworks! There's a warmth to most of these tracks that draws us in right away – and although some rhythms are clubby, the spirit here is different than earlier sort of projects along these lines by Osunlade or some of his contemporaries – as instead of the beats, the lyrics go first, and everything else follows – with Walters really setting a different tone for each track, as he moves between cultural roots and references, while Patchworks helps find the right focus with his instrumentation and production. ✨✧ KonOn My Way ... CD
BBE (UK), 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first full album we've ever heard from Kon – and a really soulful set that follows strongly off his famous mixtapes and compilations with Amir! As on those gems, there's a very classic sound going on here – a strong love of the best moments of 70s soul, funk, and club – delivered with some surprisingly contemporary inflections at times – mostly in the way Kon uses studio elements to help wrap together his influences in a seamless, effortless groove! Rhythms step up strongly at all the right moments – sometimes club funk, sometimes a bit more soulful house – and the album features guest appearances from Amy Douglas, Georg Levin, Induce, and Ben Westbeech – plus some mixing help from Caserta. The overall mix of classic and contemporary is somewhere in the Joey Negro/Sunburst Band mode – and titles include "All Night", "She Was A Queen", "Awe Baby", "Don'tcha Wanna", "Blow Me A Kis", "On My Way", "Love Shine", and "You Don't Know". ✨✧ King Britt/Philadelphia ExperimentKing Britt Presents Philadelphia Experiment Remixed ... CD
Ropeadope, 2002. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An incredible record – far greater than we even expected! The setup is simple: King Britt and his crew remix the tapes from 2001's experimental jazz jam session by a trio of fellow Philadelphians – drummer Ahmir Thompson (The Roots), jazz bassist Christian McBride, and keyboardist Uri Caine. Britt's really blown his top here – taking the original album (great in its own right), and turning it into a set of cosmic grooves that bear almost no relation to the initial work, yet still keep its soulful heart. The depth of the project is stunning – way more than just simple remix tricks, and a whole new level of expression that shows why Philly is fast becoming the music capitol of the 21st Century. Includes work by Rob Yancey, Charlie Dark, Phillip Charles, Oba Funke, Vikter Duplaix, The Randy Weston Experience, DJ Ghe, and Britt himself – with titles that include "South Street", "Paul Edwards The Orange Line (lle lfe)", "(Re)Moved (Oba Funke Far Re-Moved dub)", "Diamond Street", "Philadelphia Experiment (rmx)", "Delaware Avenue", "Miles Hit (Rob Life mix)", "Broad & Cecil B Moore", "Brown Street", and "Groover The III (the theme to massagejawn.com)". VariousBlue Note Revisited ... CD
Blue Note, 2004. Used ... $7.99
A dream come true! Someone at Blue Note is keeping their eyes and ears on the street and in the clubs – because here's another late model conceptual triumph – a remix project pairing current innovators in the club and hip hop underground with classic numbers from the label's vaults! The concept is simple; classic numbers are given to handpicked remixers, re-doers, and stylistic misfits best suited to re-work that particular number. Mo Wax maestros La Funk Mob open the set with a mellow, club soul tweak of Wayne Shorter's "Oriental Funk Song". Kenny Dope trips out Bobby Hutcherson's "La Malanga" into a bubbly club funk jam. "Kyoto Jazz Massive" completely re-work Eddie Henderson's "Kudu" into a wonderful number all their own. Perhaps the biggest triumph of all here is the consistency throughout; every artist attached brings their A-game (how could they do any less, given a chance to add their own elements to the some of the most influential numbers they could get their hands on?) Amazing, amazing stuff – whether it's the scratched up, hip hop flavor J Dilla brings to Jack McDuff's "Oblighetto" or the righteous electronic groove Jazzanova drops on Eddie Gale's "Song Of The Will", the minimalist, keys and beats drive Osunlade brings into Grant Green's "A Time To Remember". Every track sparkles! Other tracks include DJ Spinna/Donald Byrd "Lansanna's Priestess", 4 Hero/Horace Silver "Won't You Open Up Your Senses", DJ Cam & Erik Truffaz/Donald Byrd "The Emperor", Herbert/Michel Petrucciani "Caravan" and more! VariousTotally Wired & Illicit Grooves – Acid Jazz – The Birth Of A Scene 1987 to 1990 ... CD
Acid Jazz/BGP (UK), Late 80s. New Copy ... $10.99 18.99
Tremendous grooves from the earliest (and best) years of the acid jazz scene – all recorded at a time when London was exploding with sounds from the 60s and 70s, and turning out some of the hippest music on the planet! Although the term "acid jazz" was soon mishandled and mis-managed here in the US, the earliest days of the movement were really a tremendous time in London – a period when folks returned to the core elements that made funk, jazz, and soul great – and shook off all of the too-electric and too-stiff modes that had crept in during the 80s! Most of the work here is in a really spare, stripped-down funky mode – a cross between soul jazz of the 60s and blacksploitation funk of the 70s, with possibly a few more contemporary elements thrown into the mix. And in these years way before the current deep funk revival, what's even more important is the way these songs were produced – with a warmth that other groups hadn't had in years, and a real love of the way these tracks might have sounded in older studios a few decades before. The package contains a number of key rare singles from the Acid Jazz label, other album tracks, and even a few classics that had a big influence on the London scene. Titles include the rare pre-Acid Jazz single "Got To Give" by The Brand New Heavies, the sublime "Rejoice In Righteousness" by Bukky Leo Quintet, and the tracks "Cut & Run" by Lay Zee Muthas, "Like A Gun" by King Truman, "The Killer" by Night Trains, "People Get Ready" by The Brand New Heavies, "Haw Right Now" by Patrice Rushen, "Earthly Powers" by Man Called Adam, "Mr PC" by Snowboy, "Spinning Wheel" by New Jersey Kings, "Let The Good Times Roll" by The Quiet Boys, and "Mighty Mouse" by Caesar Frazier. Loads of great notes too – a really detailed look at the London scene at the end of the 80s! CD

Max ColeStarcharts ... CD
Wah Wah (UK), 2006. Used ... $0.99
Max has his eyes on the stars on the cover of this one, and the record's got an equally cosmic groove to match – kind of a slower, more spaced out take on the London style of the early 21st Century – served up with fresh new touches that give the album a more righteous sound than you might expect! The beats here are often a bit mellow, and usually not that broken – just stretched out as a nice bottom support for Max's mix of keyboards and a few other jazzy touches. The overall sound is pretty great – really back to basics, and almost the sound that we'd first started loving from London in the mid 90s years when everyone was inspired by 70s soul jazz, yet never taking things too far over the top. Quite subtle, but in a really good way – with titles that include "Wallflowerin", "Prayerie", "Backstep", "Not Of This Earth", "Spinning", "Ay Calor", and "Silver Linings". CD

A great follow-up to the African Spirits single from the team of Nicola Conte and Gianluca Petrella – and like that one, a set that draws heavily on influences from classic Afro Funk! "Free Your Mind" is an instrumental that has these great rising horn passages – soaring nicely over bubbling grooves served up by the duo – while "Imani River" has superb vocals from Bridgette Amofah, who really takes over the tune, and gives the whole thing the righteous vibe of some of the best 70s records by Letta Mbulu! Amofah returns on "Infinity" – a cut that brings together the best qualities of the previous two, with maybe a bit more of the clubby vibe that you'll know from Conte's classic work! Ajabu (Germany), 2008. Used ... $8.99
Great grooves from Sofi Hellborg – a European musician, but one with a deep commitment to Afro Funk grooves! The style here is nicely divergent from Sofi's previous set with Tony Allen – still strongly Afro funky at the roots, but with a bit more emphasis on jazzy passages too – not only Sofi's own work on alto and soprano sax, but also trombone, guitar, and keyboards from group members too. Sofi sings a bit on the record – in sweet tones that are again a nice change from the usual Afro Funk revival record – and the lyrics are often righteous, but without ever going too far over the top. Titles include "Mother Earth", "Maybe I Was Dreaming", "All The Signs", "Drumming Is Calling", "Tell Your Mama", "Cannot Stop To Play", and "Bottledance", which features some great instrumentation on glass bottles! Another amazing set from Bluey and Incognito – one of the few groups who seem to get better and better as the years go by! The title of this album is a line from Roy Ayers' classic "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" – and the group begin the record with an excellent cover version of that tune – really setting the scene for the warmly jazzy grooves to come! A sweet batch of funky grooves from Domu – spelling his name backwards here to give the record the flavor of a new artist, but still credited the right way round on production – which means that he's not fooling anybody with the name! The record's quite similar to Domu's other work at one level – a flurry of beats and keys, in a warm London-styled tradition – but there's also more of a stripped-down and funky approach to the tracks – a core fascination with the simple elements that help set them up, expanded out nicely, but without any gimmicks or tricks. What's UpMusic Is Real ... CD
Commodo Depot (Japan), 2007. Used ... $18.99
What's up is that these cats are plenty darn groovy – a hip young Japanese combo with a real ear for classic-styled jazz! The album's got plenty of echoes of an older European jazz scene – particularly the modal moments of the 60s heard in work by Italian players, and some of the best of the MPS/Saba crew – a real sensitivity to rhythm changes that keeps things fresh throughout, and which makes each track on the album explode with a new sense of delight. The production here is great too – simple, no-nonsense, and as clear and straight ahead as the grooves – not as much of a dancefloor focus as some of the Japanese club jazz combos, and plenty of warmth and imagination on the solos. Instrumentation includes trumpet, tenor, piano, bass, and drums – and the album's a beautiful treasure through and through – the kind of a set that would be right at home with some of your best originals from many years back. ✨✧ Young DisciplesMove On (LP, Lynch Mob beats)/Freedom (Free For All mix)/All I Have In Me (Original Musiquarium mix) (CD single) ... CD
Talkin' Loud (UK), 1992. Used ... $2.99
An assortment of killer tracks from the Young Disciples' first album – all of them great! "Move On" is a skittish groover with vocals by Carleen Anderson – pumped up a bit more on the beats here. "Freedom" is a slower groover, with really righteous vocals – sounding better here with a bit more percussion than the LP mix – and "All I Have In Me" is really redone nicely, coming off in a string/soul style that really lives up to the "Musiquarium" in the title! VariousBrazil – Sambossica ... CD
Afro Baile, 2008. Used ... $9.99
A cool collection of contemporary grooves with Brazilian roots – material that's right up there with some of the best recent material from labels like Far Out or Trama, and which shares a similar blend of acoustic and electric elements! Most of these numbers have a warmly soulful glow – great vocals on the top, usually sung in Portuguese – supported with live instrumentation that's heavy on percussion, but also includes keyboards, guitar, and occasional electronics too – all handled with a beautiful sense of balance, and never pushed into the colder territory that can turn us off. A number of these artists are ones we'd never heard at all – making the CD an especially great discovery for us – and titles include "Maimborie" by Mr Ze, "Quando Voce Chega" by Soukeyna, "Jeito Esquisito" by Fabio Fonseca Trio, "Pra Bahia" by Boca Do Rio, "Que Nego E Esse" by Micheline Cardoso, "Preta" by Partido Leve, "Canto Negro" by Ana Paula Da Silva, and "Tambores Da Serra" by Tambores Da Serra.
