✨✧ Nina Simone/DJ MaestroLittle Girl Blue Remixed (180 gram green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Bethlehem/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 2016. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Nina Simone's legendary first album gets the remix treatment – and at a level that's even more soulful and dynamic than the Verve Remixed handling of her music! DJ Maestro's at the helm here, but the set features a host of different talents all jumping into the fray – some of whom serve up clubjazz-styled takes on the original tunes, others who move into clubbier territory, with more of an emphasis on beats and grooves! Titles include "Plain Gold Ring (Mop Mop rework)", "Little Girl Blue (Maestro rmx)", "Love Me Or Leave Me (Suonho rework)", "African Mailman (Rebel rmx)", "I Loves You Porgy (Mees Dierdorp remix)", "African Mailman (Opolopo rmx)", "He Needs Me (Gamophonedzie rmx)", and "Love Me Or Leave Me" by Gabriel & Castellon & Maestro rmx)". Gerardo FrisinaJoyful Sound ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2023. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
Gerardo Frisina always seems to give us joyful sounds – but this time around, that might be the case more than ever – as the album's overflowing with all sorts of lively rhythms that are peppered with jazz-based instrumentation! Things are less hard-driving than some of Frisina's earlier work – which allows more space for things to seep into the grooves in a really nice way – warm Fender Rhodes, Hammond organ, and sweet solos on saxes, flute, and trumpet! As always, Frisina's the maestro at the helm – working rhythms both acoustic and electric – but there's also a fair bit of guest players who provide the live instrumentation – on tracks that include plenty of Gerardo's own songs, plus takes on tracks by Joao Donato, Waltel Branco, and Yusef Lateef. Titles include "Misterioso", "Hombre", "Naquela Base (new blend)", "On Again (album version)", "Hechizo Magico", "Dansi Na/Mahaba", "Parkview Theme", "Duende", and "Africa (Brazil)". CD

Reprise/Warner, 2001. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock

Titles include "The Man With The Harmonica" by Apollo Four Forty, "Chi Mai" by Nightmares On Wax, "Giocoso, Gioioso" by Groove Corporation, "La Bambola Come Maddalena" by Sofa Surfers, "La Lucertola" by De Phazz, "Clan Of The Sicilians" by DJ Dick of Rocker's Hi-Fi, "Il Grande Silencio" by Thievery Corporation, and "Belinda May" by Fantastic Plastic Machine. 13 tracks in all! ✨✧ Gerardo FrisinaMoving Ahead (with bonus track) ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The cover image is a bit different than the modernist images usually used for records by Italian maestro Gerardo Frisina, and the sound is a bit different too – maybe less Latin or Brazilian than some of his previous records, but still filled with lots of percussion at the core! There's plenty of live drums and percussion next to the rhythm patterns created by Gerardo – and the percussion is especially strong throughout, really grounding the tunes nicely, often with strong conga work – amidst other instrumentation that includes vibes, flute, trumpet, and Fender Rhodes! The album has some slight use of kora, which is great – and the whole thing is another groovy feather in the mighty cap of a musician who's been giving us great records for many years. Titles include "Nahi's Son", "Damay", "Desencanto", "Kerewan", "Que Dilema", "Vicky", "Nahi", "Cuiaba", and "Foresta Esotica". CD features the bonus track "Mwanga". CD

✨✧ S Tone IncBody & Soul – The Disco Experience ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sweet set of remixes – material from the already-clubby album Body & Soul, taken to even further dancefloor territory by maestro Stefano Tirone! The core album already had a really upbeat vibe – with nicely varied vocals from Toco, Afra Kane, and Laura Fedele – and the remixes here balance things out in an equally great way – on titles that include extended remixes of "Pra Voce", "In The Name Of Love", and "Rosa Da Ribeira" – plus remixes of "Midnight Sun", "No Meio Do Samba", "Move On", and "Body & Soul" – and an Invisible Session remix of "Odoya". ✨✧ Bob SinclarIII ... CD
Defected (UK), 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
A stunning set of modern disco numbers from Bob Sinclar – the maestro of the Paris dancefloor! This album's Bob's third (in case you couldn't guess from the title!) – and it's an even more focused effort than before – filled with tightly grooving tracks that make the whole thing feel like finding a box of singles that have been lost in the back of a DJ booth since the early 80s! Lots of classic late 70s and early 80s sounds – especially those from the New York scene – and tracks feature some great lead vocals by Linda Lee Hopkins and Camille Lefort. Titles include "The Beat Goes On", "Nature Boy", "Who Needs Sleep Tonight", "Sexy Dancer", "Do It", "Metro Blanche", "Beat The Clock", "Europa", and "So High". CD

Giant Step, 2001. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastically soulful delight! The CD features a continuous mix of tracks handled by New York's supreme maestro Ron Trent – a perfectly blended and expertly selected batch of spiritual house, strident soul, and jazzy grooves. Not a bit of BS in the mix, and lots of rare sides lifted from singles on the Giant Step DJ pool – solid all the way through, and cutting a swath through the garbage to lift out the future of soul and club music! Titles include "Lamentations (you son)" by Carl Hancock Rux, "Future Love (original)" by Atlantis feat Naomi, "Stars (Tauriva mix)" by Jiva, "Elevation (Shelter late night voc)" by Blaze, "Naima" by Hipnotic, "Saturday Night Experience (Ron Trent mix)" by Jody Watley, "Rise (Sentinel Dome mix)" by Richard Worth, "Jingo (Aquamarine mix)" by Kalawang, "Do You Know" and "Holiday (DJ Deep & original)" by Donnie, and "When It Rains (Restless Soul rmx)" by Jeymes Samuel. ✨✧ Aflex ComboSound Of Feeling ... CD
Routine (Japan), 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
Loads of great percussion here – more than enough to warrant the album's striking cover image – and other instrumentation includes jazzy keyboards and vibes as well! The album's right up there with other recent projects on Japan's Routine label – a mix of older sounds and contemporary club jazz elements – although Aflex Combo features a bit more programming overall, handled by Keisuke Yamazoe, who's sort of the maestro behind the project! There's still plenty of live instrumentation too – the aforementioned vibes, played by Masami Watanabe of The Fascinations – plus piano, sax, keyboards, and even bagpipes on one groovy track. The percussion often seems programmed, but still retains an acoustic, organic quality – further bringing a classic feel to the set – and titles include "Something Blue", "Biliyala", "Intermezzo", "After The Rain", "The Latin Thing (AC Stomp mix)", "Sound Of Feeling", and "Magic Mood". ✨✧ VariousJobiniana – A Tribute To Antonio Carlos Jobim ... CD
Sony (Japan), 2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim – one recorded especially for the Japanese market, and featuring original recordings by some of our favorite Japanese artists – including Monday Michiru, Bird, Tica, Orange Pekoe, Akiko, Noa Noa, and Ino Hidefumi! The lyrics here are often in English, and the overall style's a bit like some of the American bossa sessions of the 60s – warm and jazzy, with backings that are full, but never too lush to be sleepy – cast in just the right blend of influences to make the package a really fresh take on the sound of Jobim – one that honestly sparkles a lot more than most recent efforts of this type from Brazil. French bossa maestro Pierre Barouh also works on the record – and titles include "Double Rainbow", "Samba De Maria Luiza", "Two Kites", "Quiet Nights", "One Note Samba", "Ela E Carioca", "Someone To Light Up My Life", "No More Blues", and "Wave". ✨✧ VariousBlue Note Revisited ... LP
Blue Note, 2004. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A dream come true! Someone at Blue Note is keeping their eyes and ears on the street and in the clubs – because here's another late model conceptual triumph – a remix project pairing current innovators in the club and hip hop underground with classic numbers from the label's vaults! The concept is simple; classic numbers are given to handpicked remixers, re-doers, and stylistic misfits best suited to re-work that particular number. Mo Wax maestros La Funk Mob open the set with a mellow, club soul tweak of Wayne Shorter's "Oriental Funk Song". Kenny Dope trips out Bobby Hutcherson's "La Malanga" into a bubbly club funk jam. "Kyoto Jazz Massive" completely re-work Eddie Henderson's "Kudu" into a wonderful number all their own. Perhaps the biggest triumph of all here is the consistency throughout; every artist attached brings their A-game (how could they do any less, given a chance to add their own elements to the some of the most influential numbers they could get their hands on?) Amazing, amazing stuff – whether it's the scratched up, hip hop flavor J Dilla brings to Jack McDuff's "Oblighetto" or the righteous electronic groove Jazzanova drops on Eddie Gale's "Song Of The Will", the minimalist, keys and beats drive Osunlade brings into Grant Green's "A Time To Remember". Every track sparkles! Other tracks include DJ Spinna/Donald Byrd "Lansanna's Priestess", 4 Hero/Horace Silver "Won't You Open Up Your Senses", DJ Cam & Erik Truffaz/Donald Byrd "The Emperor", Herbert/Michel Petrucciani "Caravan" and more! (Funky Compilations, New Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album
