FelaUnderground Spiritual Game – Mixed by Chief Xcel ... CD
Quannum, 1970s/1980s. Used ... $6.99
A surprisingly wonderful little project – one that brings together shorter snippets of Fela's classic tunes, into an extended sound collage that's got a really captivating feel! We initially expected this one to be gimmicky and a bit silly, but it's really not – and instead stands as a loving "mixtape" that showcases the best bits of Fela's genius – a keyboard solo here, a vocal chant there, all the while pushed along by the great one's groundbreaking Afro Funk rhythms! The set includes one very early number by Fela from 1964 – "Ololufe Mi" – plus bits of later tracks that include "Mr Follow Follow", "Ariya", "Unnecessary Begging", "Swegbe & Pako", "Monkey Banana", "Trouble Slee", and "Look & Laugh". (Global Grooves, New Grooves) CD
(Out of print, sticker remant on back of case.)

✨✧ Thievery CorporationCosmic Game ... CD
ESL, 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
Thievery Corporation are back after a long hiatus – and they've returned to the fold with a host of surprising guest stars! The set's got a really wide range of grooves – as one might expect when the group's working with artists that include David Byrne, Perry Farrell, and The Flaming Lips! But over and above these bigger crossover names, the team's also sticking very true to their roots on other tracks – bringing in some great downtempo and Brazilian influences, and fleshing out tunes with an equally great array of lesser-known talents that includes Sista Pat, Gunjan, Verny Varela, Gigi Rezende, and Patrick De Santos. Titles include "Marching The Hate Machines", "Pela Janela", "Sol Tapado", "The Time We Lost Our Way", "A Gentle Dissolve", "Holographic Universe", "The Heart's A Lonely Hunter", and "The Cosmic Game". ✨✧ TocoRiviera ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2024. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
Maybe the greatest album to date from Toco – warm, jazzy, and filled with all of the best influences from Brazilian music – served up with live instrumentation that brings even more soul to the music than some of the artist's sparer sessions! Toco since throughout, with this raspy charm that's even more compelling than we remember from years back – and the larger lineup of players mixes plenty of percussion with guitars, vibes, berimbau, and cavaquinho – as well as a nice array of keyboard work from Stefano Tirone, who's working here in territory that's a lot warmer than some of his clubbier project as S-Tone! The whole thing is wonderful – and very much in the classic reworking of Brazilian styles that was one of the first great marks of the Schema label many years back – still very much at the top of their game, on titles that include "Vento Doce", "Mar", "Lagrima", "Luz Da Bahia", "Alma De Turista", "Clube", "Carnaval Primeiro", and "Coragem". ✨✧ UnklePsyence Fiction ... LP
Mo Wax, 1998. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $69.99
One of the principal albums in trip hop's ascension into the mainstream, and the bright, extroverted flipside to Portishead's darker vision of the late 90s scene. Mo Wax honcho James Lavelle's longstanding Unkle project got a massive makeover when DJ Shadow became the prime sonic architect for the Psyence Fiction LP. Shadow throws everything but the kitchen sink into the thing, working with a wide range of vocalists and collaborators from hip hop innovators (Kool G Rap, Mike D) to whiny alternative rockers (Richard Ashcroft, Thom Yorke). With a project as busy as Unkle, the law of subjectivity pretty much dictates that you're gonna love parts, and hate parts – but Shadow was so on top of his game at the time, he somehow manages to hold it all together. It may not be his best ever work, but Psyence Fiction certainly holds up, and it's an essential piece of the puzzle! Tracks include "Main Title Theme", "Guns Blazing", "Blood Stain", "Unreal", "Chaos", "Rabbit In Your Headlights", Lonely Soul", and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing with white labels and Masterdisk stamp. Includes the printed inner sleeves. A nice copy!)

✨✧ Soul Society feat Roy AyersSmiling Faces ... CD
Soulciety/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1997. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The great Roy Ayers joins Soul Society for this classic 90s set – a record that was really forging deep funk territory years before Daptone, Colemine, and all the contemporary labels got into the game! Soul Society's a German collective of musicians and singers with a great ear for 70s grooves, but who also do just the right job of updating the music too – and they wisely chose Roy Ayers' vibes to help shade in all sorts of great aspects of this albums – bringing Roy back from almost-retirement, at a time when most of the rest of the world wasn't giving him a chance to record! Titles include remakes of "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", "Funky Nassau", and "Smiling Faces" – plus "Feed Me Your Love", "Spaced Out", "Pusher", and "Money Mad". CD

✨✧ Nat King Cole & OthersRe:Generations ... CD
Capitol, 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
It's been nearly 20 years since Natalie Cole first sang duets with her father through the magic of technology – so the time's long overdue to throw a host of other talents into the mix! The style here is a bit like the Verve Remixed albums – in that the record takes older classics by Nat from the 40s and 50s, and updates them strongly with contributions from a host of contemporary mixers and producers. However, there's also a key difference here in that the album also features a fair bit of extra vocals too – from Bebel Gilberto, Natalie Cole, Nas, The Roots, and Izza Kizza – all of whom help to make the album a bit more than the simple remix effort you might expect. Nat's own vocals are a bit buried in the mix at times, but that's no problem if you're eager to hear more from the younger generation – or re:generation, as the case may be! Titles include "Day In Day Out" with Cut Chemist, "Straighten Up & Fly Right" with Will I Am & Natalie Cole, "Lush Life" with Cee-Lo Green, "Walkin My Baby Back Home" with The Roots, "The Game Of Love" with Salaam Remi & Nas, "El Choclo" with Brazilian Girls, "Pick Up" with Just Blaze, "Nature Boy" with TV On The Radio, and "Anytime Anyday Anywhere" with Amp Fiddler. ✨✧ NickodemusSoul & Science ... LP
Wonderwheel, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Nickodemus wasn't the first to blend together a world's worth of influences with contemporary rhythms and production, but over the years, he's definitely risen to the top of the game – especially as he's moved into more subtle territory like this! The record is nicely freed from the dancefloor at times, which not only seems to allow more of blend of styles, but also really showcase the vocals from some of the album's mighty guests – in a lineup that includes The Illustrious Blacks, Antonio Uzana, Pat Kalla, and others. But if you dig his dancefloor work, don't worry, as there's still plenty of groovers too – in a set that includes "La Noche", "Mama Tchipp", "Plastic", "The Shadow Thief", "No Puedo Parar", "Race To Robotics", "Soul & Science", and "Mamaciterranea". ✨✧ Thievery CorporationSounds From The Thievery Hi Fi ... CD
Eighteenth Street Lounge, 1996/1999. Used ... Out Of Stock
A groundbreaking mix of tunes – early work by Thievery Corp, one of the best remix/producer teams of the past 10 years! The Thieves have a huge bag of influences to dip into – one that includes bossa grooves, easy melodies, and 70s electric funk, nearly all of which seem to come into play at one moment or another on many of the album's tracks. There's also a nice dubbed-out quality to the album – making it a downtempo classic with a really deep feel. Titles include "The Oscillator", "Interlude", "Encounter In Bahia", "The Glass Bead Game", "Incident At Gate 7", and "Shaolin Satellite". CD

A double-length collection of remixes from the first two albums by Amy Winehouse – a set of tracks that take all the funk of the originals, and add in some elements of hip hop and club as well!
