✨✧ Schema SextetLook Out – Tribute To Basso/Valdambrini ... CD
Schema (Italy), 1999. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great jazzy grooves from this hip Italian combo – a late 90s precursor to the current club jazz scene! The group's got a classic Blue Note sound – mixing up soul jazz and modal grooves with some very tight playing and a strong commitment to a classic sound. The horn players are all great – and include Fabrizio Bosso on trumpet, Gianluca Petrella on trombone, and Rosario Giuliani on alto sax – all great names from the Italian scene. The rhythm section's pretty darn nice, too – with piano from Pietro Lussu – and the tracks have a hard groove that reminds us of classic lines by Art Blakey from the early 60s! The set's a tribute to the classic Italian hard bop combo of Gianni Basso and Oscar Valdambrini – and the album includes some of that group's great original compositions, like "Look Out", "Young Man", "Time Was", "Lothar", "Before Ten O'Clock", and "Bob's Buddy". ✨✧ Bob SinclarIII ... CD
Defected (UK), 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
A stunning set of modern disco numbers from Bob Sinclar – the maestro of the Paris dancefloor! This album's Bob's third (in case you couldn't guess from the title!) – and it's an even more focused effort than before – filled with tightly grooving tracks that make the whole thing feel like finding a box of singles that have been lost in the back of a DJ booth since the early 80s! Lots of classic late 70s and early 80s sounds – especially those from the New York scene – and tracks feature some great lead vocals by Linda Lee Hopkins and Camille Lefort. Titles include "The Beat Goes On", "Nature Boy", "Who Needs Sleep Tonight", "Sexy Dancer", "Do It", "Metro Blanche", "Beat The Clock", "Europa", and "So High". CD

✨✧ Cinematic OrchestraEvery Day (3LP red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Ninja Tune (UK), 2002. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The second album by Cinematic Orchestra – and a Ninja Tune classic! The group lives up to its name here, witth sweeping soundscapes that build slowly and set the mood just so. They seem to be exploring a slightly more jazzy/soulful route this go 'round, and are joined on 2 tracks by soul diva Fontella Bass. Roots Manuva contributes vocals on another number, but his contribution comes off as more of a recitation than a rap, and it works beautifully! The tracks are all fairly lengthy, none clocking in under 6 minutes, evolving and building as they do, our favorites include"All That You Give", "Burnout" and "Everyday" – and other tracks include "Flite", "Evolution" and "Man With The Movie Camera". ✨✧ Natural Yogurt BandTuck In With The Natural Yogurt Band (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Jazzman/Now Again, 2011. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Globe-trotting funky music from The Natural Yogurt Band – the group's second proper album – an even farther reaching and more perfectly executed blend of pulpy Sound Library styled jazz funk and all around playful grooves! The NYB is essentially a duo – Miles Newbold plays keys, vibes, flutes, percussion and effects– plus Wayne Fullwood plays drums and bass. The approach is instrumentals based (though both players contribute vocals when the rare duty calls), and while there's a playful groove throughout, it's seriously well done and never comes off as cheeky Sound Library homage or kitsch. It's as dexterously impressive as it is groovy and fun! Titles include "Weak Without Wine", "Invisible Ink", "Romance In Blue", "Horn", "Forever Drowning", "Eastern Outro", "Clocks", "Psalm", "Tweed Suit" and many more. (Deep Funk, New Grooves) CD
(Includes backing sheet.)
