✨✧ JazzanovaIn Between (German version) ... CD
Jazzanova (Germany), 2002. Used ... $4.99
The first-ever full length album from Jazzanova – and an instant classic that's been well worth the wait! For years, the group have turned out some of the most exciting singles and remixes on the international groove scene – and during all that time, they've been secretly storing away new ideas and musical thoughts for this groundbreaking debut album. The set's completely mindblowing – head and shoulders above anything else they've ever done, with a wealth of ideas and styles that we never thought them capable of. Working with a host of guest artists that include Vikter Duplaix, Capital A, Ursula Rucker, Rob Gallagher, Valerie Etienne, Dave Friedman, Doug Hammond, and others, they move far past their simple role as remix producers, and express a bold new vision – a 21st Century blend of jazz, soul, beats, and life that's impossibly hard to describe in a few short sentences. A stunner from the get-go – and shoulder-to-shoulder filled with great tracks! Titles include "No Use", "LOVE & You & I", "Fade Out", "Hanazono", "Mwela Mwela", "Keep Falling", "Cyclic", "Another New Day", "Place In Between", "Soon", "Sub Atlantic", "Glow & Glare", "Takes You Back (dub)", and "Wasted Time". CD
(CD has a totally cool package too – layers of die-cut cardboard folding over each other! Out of print.)

✨✧ OkvshoPlace Between Us ... LP
Current Moves (France), 2024. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A record without much in the way of notes – but one that features snaking saxophone solos over some mighty nice keyboards – all in a way that provides this very cool 21st Century update of laidback fusion modes from the past! Rhythms are often laidback and midtempo – usually beats, but sometimes with more live energy on the drums – showing that these guys could be a jazz combo if they wanted, but are often more interested in spinning out these great instrumentals that bridge the worlds of contemporary soul, jazz, and hip hop. Titles include "C'Est Pas La Chute", "Soule", "Between Us", "Pasitos Jaguari", "Krawall", "Okusho", and "Con Mis Perros En La Niebla". LP, Vinyl record album

Bugge WesseltoftSomewhere In Between ... CD
Jazzland (Norway), Late 1990s/2000s/Early 2010s. Used 2CD ... $16.99
A fantastic package of music that celebrates the 20 years of recording by Bugge Wesseltoft – easily one of the most compelling musical figures to emerge at the end of the 20th Century! Years back, we stocked Bugge in our New Grooves section, as he had a bit of a clubby electronic vibe – but over the years, he turned out to be not only a hell of a jazz musician, but also a budding minimalist too – a talent who completely transformed his sound, and also touched a generation of contemporaries with his strong sense of collaboration and musical stewardship! This package really showcases that legacy – and features work by artists who include Joshua Redman, Mari Boine, Erik Truffaz, Joaquin Claussell, Hakon Kornstad, Sidsel Endressen, and others – although the main focus is always Bugge's music at the core, and his incredible sense of sound and timing. The set features some old and out of print tracks, but also includes some new versions of older compositions, and a few unreleased tracks as well – making the whole thing way more than just a compilation, and instead another important addition to Bugge's catalog. Titles include "Sender", "Turner", "Breed It", "Mamullah", "You Might Say (new version)", "Yellow Is The Color", "Somewhere In Between", "Existence (new version)", "Hope (new version)", "Wy (new version)", "Kammermusik", "Den Fyrste Songen, "Try Out Here In There", and "Yoyk (new version)". ✨✧ BadbadnotgoodIV (white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Innovative Leisure/Round Hill, 2016. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... On July 8, 2024
Badbadnotgood have always been pretty damn great, actually – and never better than on album IV – a remarkable step forward for the group! As ever, they take inspiration from some of the best prog, jazz, funk (and proggy jazz funk...they blend) of the 70s and beyond, but weave it into fairly distinctive and genuinely fun modern sound. It's built to last, too –we're sure be able to come back to their work in a couple decades and it'll still work! IV finds them with the confidence to trade in some fairly subtle, smoothed out moments between to more boisterous ones, and they're more dexterous in the instrumentation – especially in the horns, keys and percussion – but some great vibes, strings, flute and more when the mood calls. Includes the great vocal track "Time Moves Slow" with Sam Herring of Future Islands, "And That, Too", "Lavender", "IV", "Chompy's Paradise", "Structure No. 3", "Cashmere", "Hyssops Of Love" and more. BassolinoCitta Futura ... LP
Serie Pegaso (Italy), 2024. New Copy ... $22.99 26.99
A jazzy group, but one that's not straight jazz either – as they work with a strongly rhythmic vibe that's somewhere between classic fusion and some of the contemporary sounds we love on Schema Records – maybe no surprise as this combo also hails from the Italian scene as well! There's a great mix of keyboards in the music – Korg Sigma, Fender Rhodes, Yamaha CP70, and Farfisa Synthorchestra – the latter of which sounds especially great, and gives the music some great spacey touches around the edges. Rhythms are all live, and have some great currents from classic boogie and late 70s club – but the vocals on most tracks bring in a special sort of vibe, in part because the singers shift, and the lyrics are in Italian. Titles include "Malavita", "Fuga Finale", "Citta Futura", "Napoli Visionaria", and "Oro Di Miele". LP, Vinyl record album

Bread & Souls featuring Paul RandolphFind The Beauty (voc, inst) ... 7-inch
Minipan (Italy), 2024. New Copy (pic cover)... $11.99 14.99
A killer cut, and one that brings back the vocals of Paul Randolph in a really wonderful way – set to this jazzy groove that features keyboards from Mark De Clive-Lowe, who also produced the track! There's plenty of other live instrumentation in the track too – guitar, percussion, and drums – and the whole thing's almost a blend between Incognito-like London soul, and some of the crisper currents of the underground! 7-inch, Vinyl record

DJ Krush & Toshinori KondoKi-Oku ... LP
Apollo/Diggers Factory (France), 1998. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 33.99 On June 7, 2024
While most collaborations between hip hop producers and jazz players have been mediocre at best, neither really being able to get invloved enough in each other's music, this collaboration between Kondo and Krush is almost entirely successful. Kondo's played in just about every style from all out free jazz to hard bop, and Krush's spare and slightly abstract approach to both the turntables and with his beats creates just the right backdrop. We got open on "Ha Doh", "Sun Is Shining", "Fu Yu" and "Ki gen". 13 tracks in all. (Hip Hop, New Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

Xaver Fischer TrioXaver Fischer Trio ... CD
Unique (Germany), 2000. Used ... $4.99 9.99
A fantastic batch of keyboard tracks! Xaver Fischer plays like one of the funky fusion greats of the 70s – somewhere between Gene Harris, Ronnie Foster, and Johnny Hammond – working the electric piano and assorted keys to come up with a smooth spacey sound that reminds us of the classic days of Blue Note funk or Fantasy Records fusion! This album's a stripped-down affair that features only bass and drums behind Fischer's keys – plus a female vocal one track – which makes for a super-soulful sound that's really solid all the way through! Titles include "Bass of Space", "Venus", "Krakatu", "Babylon", "Gargamel", and "Palenque". CD

✨✧ Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders, & The London Symphony OrchestraPromises ... LP
Luaka Bop, 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... $21.99 22.99
A fantastic record, and one of those cases where the presence of the mighty Pharoah Sanders can really transform the sound of a session! We'll admit that we weren't sure what to expect – but at the core, the record is really a set of duets between Pharoah on tenor and Sam Shepherd on keyboards – a great range that includes Fender Rhodes, Hammond B3, celeste, and acoustic piano – slowly graced by some larger arrangements from the LSO! Yet even with the majesty of the larger group, who come into the proceedings in baby steps, there's a core feeling of intimacy that never goes away – sublimely spiritual sounds from Pharoah on tenor throughout – with phrasing and styles that show us that he hasn't lost an ounce of his talent since his early years on Impulse records. The album's maybe one of the most beautiful things that Sanders has given us in a long time – and that's saying a lot, as he's always pretty great – and the set features the long "Promises" suite, in nine movements – a piece for saxophone, strings, keyboards, and electronics composed by Shepherd. Friends From RioFriends From Rio 2014 ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2014. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
One of the best records in years from the mighty Far Out label – and a set that really takes the imprint back to its roots! The name of the record echoes the first Friends From Rio session that launched Far Out almost two decades ago – and like that classic, this one's a collaborative effort between a range of Brazilian and British talents – served up in a style that bridges the gap between older bossa and more contemporary modes! The music is perfect from the ground up – not a cheesy bossa remix project, but a true blend of all the best elements, served up in a rich new style. The project gets key Incognito-style help from Daniel "Venom" Maunick, and a real Azymuth pedigree from Alex Malheiros – and the whole thing features a great range of different singers, including Hyldon, Robertinho Silva, Aleh Ferreira, Ivan Matheus, Denise Pinaud, Sabrina Malheiros, and Carlos Dafe – each wrapped up in a sweet blend of Fender Rhodes, organ, riffing guitar, and sweet jazzy horns. Titles include "So Resta A Porta Se Abrir", "Mas Que Nada", "Garota", "Aguai", "Casino Bangu", "Batucada Bidu", "Anthemia", "Leita De Pedra", and "Mulher Malagueta". (Brazil, New Grooves) CD

✨✧ Kyoto Jazz MassiveSpirit Of The Sun ... CD
Compost (Germany), 2002. Used ... $8.99
An amazing record from Kyoto Jazz Massive – and about time, too! The Japanese collective has been bubbling under for years – doing some of the most groundbreaking production, remix, and single work of the current Japanese scene – and this album is really their first true full-length, a massive set of tracks with a soulful approach we never knew they had! The whole thing's amazing from the word "go" (which actually isn't the first word on the album!) – and the first few tracks are especially strong, all soulful numbers with vocals by guest singers that include Vanessa Freeman, Victor Davies, and Maiya James. After that burst, the album takes off instrumentally – stretching for the sky in a jazz-infused blend of beats and keyboards, occasional other instrumentation creeping into the mix at just the right moments. Titles include "The Dawn Introduction", "The Brightness Of These Days", "Mind Expansions", "Stargazer", "Eclipse", "Between The Lights", "Substream", "Shine", "ME Outroduction", and "Behind The Shadow". ✨✧ LTJ X-PerienceAin't Nothin But A Groove ... LP
Irma (Italy), 2013. New Copy 2LP ... $38.99 44.99 About June 7, 2024
A great return to form for the LTJ Experience – exactly the kind of tight grooves and soulful sounds that made Luca Trevisi such a standout in earlier years of the Italian club scene! The style here is really back to basics – somewhere between the spareness of the post-disco years and the fuller soulful styles when house started coming into play – always pretty funky in the rhythms, but with a forward-moving focus that's quite different than straight instrumental funk too. Titles include "Funk Is On", "Disco-Ver Me", "What I Feel", "Linear Funk", "Vuoto Beat", and "Get Down". LP, Vinyl record album
