A great live date from this ultra-hip combo – one that has them really settling in to their new home at Blue Note, by taking on a host of classics from the label – along with key tracks of their own composition as well! The sound here is even more wonderful than on some of their studio sets – almost a bit more earthy, and human – given the spontaneity of the concert performance, especially in the rhythm section. Fabrizio Bosso's trumpet and flugelhorn are right out front, matched proudly by the tenor of Daniele Scannapieco – and rhythm is from Luca Mannutza on piano, Pietro Ciancaglini on bass, and Lorenzo Tucci on drums. You might know these guys under their previous name of Kutimangoes – one that's dropped maybe in part because there's a shift in the music here to a slightly different style! Where Kutimangoes explored a heavy dose of Afro Funk on their records, Sunborn take off from the roots and move things into a much more fluid sense of expression – often percolating rhythms that have both acoustic and electric elements, in support of a superb hornline that moves with a sense of majesty that really makes the album stand out – giving the whole thing an instant sense of power and pride! Kind of a folksy looking cover, but a warm and wonderfully soulful little record – a side project by the lead vocalist of The Rurals – recording here in a sound that's very much like their own work! The grooves have a really warm sort of flow throughout – sometimes a bit more mellow than the more dancefloor-oriented styles of The Rurals, but always done with a similar sense of depth and love of older soul modes. The production's great – spare, stripped down, and with a really clear approach – nothing too broken or remixed, and filled with some really great keyboards alongside the vocals.
