✨✧ Jimmy AbneyReturn To Forever ... CD
Yoruba (UK), 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sweet electric soul from Jimmy Abney – one of the best Osunlade discoveries we've heard in recent years, and an artist who's bound to make plenty of waves on his own – even without Osunlade's support! Abney sings and plays keyboards in the style of some lost 70s soul great – but also comes across with a sound that's a bit more contemporary – somewhat more stripped down, and nicely lean – in ways that make most of the tunes here fluid and sparkling, but in ways that are light years from commercial soul. Jimmy chooses to cover Marvin Gaye's "Come Go With Me" and Heatwave's "Star Of The Story" – and both tunes are a key hint at his sound, which often has some nicely moogy undercurrents and spacey grooves. Other titles include "More Of You", "Darlin", "Is There Anybody Here", "Crazy Love", "Hello", "Guardian Angel", and "What's On Your Mind". CD

✨✧ DabryeAdditional Productions Vol 1 ... CD
Ghostly International, Used ... Out Of Stock
Dabrye does his digital dub re-manipulation minimalization on a number of tracks by different artists. We could live without the Beans track "Nite Eats Day", but on most of the cuts his heart is in the right pocket. Check his job on Nomo's "Not Wisely/Too Well" & his live version of "Hyped Up Plus Tax". Other tracks include remixes of "Infinite Wavelength" by Trans Am, "Angel Beat" by Ill Sound, and "Monstertruckdriver" bby T Raumschmiere. (Hip Hop, New Grooves) CD

✨✧ FlangerMidnight Sound ... CD
Ninja Tune, 1999. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Jazzy electronica – with a true jazz edge, not that fake "jazz" reference that you so often find producers making to sound hip, but never actually coming up with in their own music! Flanger features Atom Heart (aka Senor Coconut) on Fender Rhodes, vibes, guitars, and more – working here with Burnt Friedman on drums and percussion, plus some occasional upright bass and bass samples. The set's a great takeoff point from the pair's singles of a few years back – with a groove that's both spare and complicated, mixing some of the best elements of 70s spacey jazz with the rhythms of the post drum and bass generation. Titles include "Nightbeat 2", "Stepping Out Of My Dream", "Bosco's Disposable Driver", "Midnight Sound", "So What", and "Angel Of Love". CD

Four TetRounds (10th Anniversary Edition – with bonus live CD) ... CD
Domino, 2003. Used 2 CDs ... $8.99
Kieran Hebden's third album as Four Tet – an unpredictable, completely hypnotic batch of abstract beatcraft that sounded like it was built to last when it first appeared in the early 00s – and sure enough, it's sounds as fresh as ever a decade+ later! What makes Four Tet at his best so irresistible is the way to rolls from loosely connective beats and hazy atmosphere on one track to heavy sensory overload and back again, fully hypnotizing either way, and all the while holding together in a way that feels of like a single piece. There's a lot of different sounds coming in and out, and not a single audible bit of it is dispensable. Near perfection from one of the more creative laptop instrumentals of his generation. Titles include "Hands", "She Moves She", "First Thing", "My Angel Rocks Back And Forth", "Spirit Fingers", "Unspoken", "Chia", "As Serious As Your Life", "Aney They All Look Broken Hearted" and "Slow Jam". 10th Anniversary edition includes a bonus CD featuring a full live performance from Copenhagen, 2004. CD

✨✧ Massive AttackMezzanine ... CD
Virgin, 1998. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A heavier, darker prime era set from Massive Attack – and rightly remembered as a classic! The grooves are still really strong, but the trip hop pioneers are delving more deeply into a bass heavy dub trip with a deep, rumbling bottom running throughout the tracks and some distorted guitar and reverb drenched key and sample bits punctuating the cuts. Stunningly strong to this day – which is no mean feat given the rapid musical evolutions of the 90s onward! Includes "Angel", "Risingson", "Teardrop" (which features vocals by Cocteau Twin Elizabeth Fraser), "Inertia Creeps", "Exchange", "Dissolved Girl", "Man Next Door", "Black Milk", "Mezzanine" and "Group Four". CD
(Out of print, Argentinian pressing.)

✨✧ Ronin Arkestra (Mark De Clive-Lowe)Sonkei ... CD
Rings/DIW (Japan), 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An Arkestra performance, but one that's headed up by Mark De Clive-Lowe – who wrote all the material, and produced the record too – as a great extension of some of the more spiritual directions he's been taking in his own music in recent years! The group have a sound that definitely lives up to the spiritual jazz reference you might expect from their name – building nicely on waves of piano and keyboards from Mark, with excellent work from other ensemble members on tenor, flute, alto, trumpet, and guitar – all soaring to the skies in a great 21st Century take on 70s spiritual jazz modes! There's a number of drummers on the record, and there's no rhythm programs listed – save for "fx" and "live electronics" in the credits – but it feels as if there might be a slight current of beats amidst the live instrumentation from time to time. Not that any of that gets in the way of the sound – which is tightly focused and soaring to the skies, on tracks that include "Fallen Angel", "Tempestuous Temperaments", "Cosmic Collisions", "Lullabies Of The Lost", "Elegy Of Entrapment", and "The Art Of Altercation". (Jazz, New Grooves) CD

✨✧ Two Banks Of FourThree Street Worlds ... CD
Red Egyptian Jazz (UK), 2003. Used ... $4.99
A tremendous album from Two Banks Of Four – a group that features work from some of our favorite older members of the British scene – including singer Valerie Etienne, and musicians Chris Bowden and Ski Oakenfull! The album's got a really soaring, spacious feel – with jazzy roots that stretch back to groups like Kalima, and include Fertile Ground, but an overall sound that's very much in step with the current sound of the 21st Century London scene. The tunes are all incredibly soulful – driven by warm acoustic basslines and snapping snare percussion – and the album's got an overall feel that has a lot more real jazz playing than just beats and keys – something we approve of highly! Valerie Etienne's vocals have never sounded hipper – and titles include "Angel's Walk", "One Day", "Banks Of The Nile", "Blues For Brother", "Endless", and "Unclaimed". CD
(Digipack is lightly wrinkled.)

✨✧ ZoneGimali ... CD
Irma (Italy), 2008. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A jazzy duo with a soulful feel – and one of the deepest-sounding sets we've heard on the Irma label in a long time! Zone's got a warmly grooving quality that we really love – an approach that almost reminds us of some of the best British groups trying to do classic American soul at the end of the 80s – but served up here with a few more contemporary touches too – especially in the rhythms, which can be nicely dynamic. Vocals are by both a female and male singer, switching off from track to track – and instrumentation includes great keyboards, piano, guitar, tenor, and trumpet – grooving with a breezily soulful feel on the best numbers. Titles include "Vou Voltar", "Gimali", "Soul Desires", "Finally", "September", "Angel's Wings", "Frontera", "Madrid", and "Slave". CD

✨✧ VariousAcid Lounge In Space – Uneasy Listening Compiled By 45 Dip ... CD
Hed Kandi/Acid Lounge (UK), 2003. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A silly title, but a pretty nice album overall! This 2CD set features a cool selection of downtempo and retro-styled grooves from some of the hipper overseas labels of the past few years. There's a number of cuts on here by artists that we stock and love, but there's even more by artists we haven't – including some pretty cool groups that we were happy to discover. The package was selected by 45 Dip, and not only includes a number of their own tracks, but also has a feel that's pretty much in keeping with their own end of the musical spectrum – laidback, funky, with elements of classic instrumentation. Titles include "Gorgeous George", "Docking", "Something In Space", and "Va Va Voom (Space Lounge mix)" by 45 Dip, plus "Buddha Cowboy" by John Howard, "Mooger Fooger" by Bermuda Triangle, "She's Groovy" by Akasha, "In Spring" by Les Hommes, "Bubble Love" by Chunking, "Sea Of Change" by Broadway Project, "Angel" by Zohar, "One Day Trip In An Elevator" by Hand Polished, "Love Is Incredible" by Bastian, and "Party" by Sporto Kantes. 29 tracks in all! VariousColombian Soul – Compiled By Bagar aka Tricky D ... CD
BBE (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 18.98
A completely different side of Colombian music than you'd know from Discos Fuentes and some of the other mainstream outlets from that scene – as the tracks here are all from the contemporary underground, and represent a really rich flowering of creative grooves and soulful modes! In truth, most of this work might hail from any hip spot in the global underground – save for the fact that the lyrics are often in Spanish, and many tunes have some slight reference to older musical modes – sometimes an acoustic element mixed in with more electronic instrumentation, sometimes a more direct reference! The quality of the tracks is wonderful – a really strong surprise to our ears, as we never would have discovered this music otherwise – and it represents a really great alternative so some of the more staid, often boring attempts to create a global fusion of elements in the mainstream. Titles include "Cada Paso" by Liannia, "Cumbia Lobina (ext mix)" by Dragao featuring Nidia Gongora, "Aquazero" by Systema Solar featuring Pedro Ramaya, "Oyele" by Jimena Angel, "Cuando Canto Grito" by Cerrero featuring Lucia Pulido, "El Leopardo" by El Leopardo, "Mujer Divina" by Salsangroove, "Gualayo" by Radio Rebelde Soundsystem, "La Negra Y El Fantasma" by Bareto, "Nunca Termina" by David Caneva Akle, "Manana Sera" by Ruzto, and "De Donde Vengo Yo" by Los Transatlanticos featuring Pilar Matarola.
