You may not know the name of Dicky Continental, but you might recognize his work as drummer Rich Thair in Red Snapper – stepping out here on a solo project that takes the groundbreaking sound of that legendary group and really pushes it further! Things are maybe more abstract at times here, but no less funky – as once the clouds of sound at the start of a track begin to part, funkier beats come into the mix and really move things ahead – all in a nicely evolved version of that moodier territory that Red Snapper gave us many years back! Jo Sims adds in soulful vocals to two cuts – "Make Them Disappear" and "Split" – and other cuts include "Simon Says", "Honeysuckle", "Evolution 2", "Graveyard Of Ambition", "Hammersmith", and "Chico Flores". Abstract beats with a depth of global influences from Dimlite – the Swiss beatmaker/producer's debut for the Now Again/Stones Throw – and far reaching effort that covers a lot of aural atmosphere over its running time! Dimlite's work for Sonar Kollectiv was among the most forward looking on the roster, and that unpredictable approach is well served here. Glitchy synth sounds and bubbling electronic errata mix with more earthy rhythms and hazy melodies – with vocals that also give it a more grounded feel in spots, but this is adventurous and unpredictable in all the right ways. While most collaborations between hip hop producers and jazz players have been mediocre at best, neither really being able to get invloved enough in each other's music, this collaboration between Kondo and Krush is almost entirely successful. Kondo's played in just about every style from all out free jazz to hard bop, and Krush's spare and slightly abstract approach to both the turntables and with his beats creates just the right backdrop. A second set of abstractions on Brazilian references from Fachada – and like his first, a record that has a lean vibe overall, and a funky blend of keyboards, percussion, and some well-chosen guest instrumentation! The set is plenty soulful, but never too smooth – and although much of the instrumentation is electric, the acoustic touches here are key – and really reference a Brazilian style of production, without ever rehashing older territory at all. The best yet from Flying Lotus – who we keep allowing ourselves to believe has hit an insurmountable peak with each new record – but he just keeps getting better! Where the preceding Cosmogramma upped the stranger, spacier and more abstract textures, Until The Quiet Comes is a bit more inviting – and to his credit, Flying Lotus keeps things as innovative as ever, while still giving this one just a bit more immediately appealing atmosphere. There's nearly always a compelling beat, whether it's abstract boom bap or bubbly and synthy, with heavy bass and thick waves of sound floating over. An incredible roster of guests contribute, too – including string-arranger Miguel Atwood Ferguson, vocalists Erykah Badu, Laura Darlington and Radiohead's Thom Yorke, keyboardist Dorian Concept, and others – but there's little doubt that this is purely the Flying Lotus show. Kieran Hebden's third album as Four Tet – an unpredictable, completely hypnotic batch of abstract beatcraft that sounded like it was built to last when it first appeared in the early 00s – and sure enough, it's sounds as fresh as ever a decade+ later! What makes Four Tet at his best so irresistible is the way to rolls from loosely connective beats and hazy atmosphere on one track to heavy sensory overload and back again, fully hypnotizing either way, and all the while holding together in a way that feels of like a single piece. There's a lot of different sounds coming in and out, and not a single audible bit of it is dispensable. Near perfection from one of the more creative laptop instrumentals of his generation. Quite an unusual project from Jazzanova – a mixture of older tracks and newer ones, all brought together for an erotic German stage production! The theme of the show really unifies the tracks in a great way – bringing out qualities in Jazzanova's music that we've never noticed before, especially as their own tracks come into play with other numbers from different Sonar Kollektiv artists. There's a groove here that's straightforwardly slinky, and often a bit funky too – one that shakes off some of the too-abstract moments that sometimes get in the way with recent Jazznova projects, and focuses on the most cohesive part of their groove! A very cool take on the music of Thelonious Monk – a set that's far more abstract and offbeat than any of Monk's original recordings – but in a way that the composer might have appreciated, had he lived until the 21st Century! Mast clearly really loves these tunes, and knows them inside and out – and he splits them down the middle and feels free to take them in any way he wants – sometimes angular jazz, sometimes, much more freewheeling and electronic – but almost always with some acoustic instrumentation at play. Musicians include Gavin Templeton on alto and baritone, Jonah Levine on trombone, and Dan Rosenboom on trumpet – and Tim Conley handles guitar, bass, keyboards, and rhythms. A fantastic album of spacey keyboards, and one of the most abstract albums from the team of Matt Cooper and Andreas Allen. The tracks have the band's usual slow funky feel (which we love!), but there's also a very strong focus on electronic keys – played in a bubbling 70s style that sounds like it was lifted from a lost soundtrack, or some killer CTI session. Titles include "Piano-scape", "The Moon After The Fall", "Sketchbook Of A Voyage", and "Finding ALH84001". There's some nice guest appearances, including a trumpet solo by Byron Wallen – and the whole album's a very tight package, and a must for fans of Marc Moulin, Slide Five, or Chris Bowden. CD

Warm soul and jazz-funk steeped grooves from Glenn Underground – a Chicago house mainstay who's really crafted an excellent set here – one that pays tribute to some of the best dancefloor soul and club funk of past decades, with a timeless groove of its own! Glenn keeps the bass and the beats danceable, underneath 70s soul jazz inspired keys, Afro funk rhythms, and spacey club grooves galore. Very nice work! 8 tracks, mostly running to around the 9 minute mark, stretching out the groove nicely! That's Thelonious Monk on the cover, getting an egg yolk removed from his head – and while that image may seem a bit sacrilegious, it's also a great way to portray the sound of this unusual Japanese group! Wonk have a sound that's begun in jazz, but quickly taken to much farther-out territory – maybe part of the funk, cosmic, and soulful currents you'll know in the music of Robert Glasper in recent years – but with even trippier, more abstract moments at times – as acoustic instrumentation comes into play with some hip hop-styled production, but always with a warmly beating heart that really holds the record together! The core group features keyboards, bass, and drums – plus vocals from Kento Nagatsuka on some tracks – and the album also features guest appearances by a few MCs, who further help extend the righteous vibe of the music. Wonderfully fresh, and with a sense of variety that really rewards deeper listening – on titles that include "RdNet", "Savior", "DOF", "Minton", "1914", "Glory", and "Emly". CD

If all airports sounded this great, we'd travel all the time! Copenhagen Airport is the 3rd in Rambling's exploration of the best grooves from the current Scandinavian scene – a host of tracks from Deeplay Records of the past few years, served up in a lively mix of soulful house and more abstract numbers! The grooves here are mostly upbeat, but have plenty of warm jazzy touches – that more organic approach to the groove that's made the Scandinavian scene one watch in recent years, and which often has some nice jazz-influenced moments. Killer modern mixes of tracks from Azymuth's great Woodland Warrior album! Like the other titles in this series, this one takes a core of basic Brazilian jazz tracks – then gives them a modern production twist, with help from remixers like Jazzanova, 4 Hero, Roc Hunter, Yellow Productions, Flytronix, and others! The original album's a killer, and the remixes open it up even more by giving the tracks a cool abstract junglist quality that emphasizes their darker sides.
