Two cuts from Dwele's Subject LP – one of the most anticipated Nusoul releases on the horizon! "Find A Way" is a romantic groover with some REALLY sweet soul guitar work, a trippy synth backdrop, and breathy romantic lead vocals, clearly modeled after the giants of 70s soul, but firmly rooted in a modern sound. It's a nice single – one with as much of a new jack feel as latter day NuSoul! "Truth" is a similar groover, with the same kinda sweet synth work, with even more deeply expressive vocals that remind us a lot of Donnie's recent work, and delicately overdubbed backing vocals that send the track off like a sunnier D'Angelo. 12-inch, Vinyl record

A sparkling debut from Detroit's Dwele – a sweet vocalist in the Donny Hathaway tradition, but with a tight, beat heavy soul sound that glides between 70s soul jazz, mellowed-out Jay Dee synth hop groove, and the natural soul vibe ?uestlove brings to his productions! We first caught wind of Dwele on Slum Village's "Tainted" single, and that's a good indication of the sound you'll find on the debut. Mellow, trippy keys and sound washes drench the album from beginning-to-end, with Dwele's often deeply layered vocals weighing the bright, modern groove aspects of the sound with a rich sense of soul history. There's a slight 70s soul jazz vibe, too, in spots – a sophisticated studio groove with bright bass and some sunny, soulfully strummed electric guitar. Dwele finds some truly nice middle ground between the natural soul scene, modern groove, and the mellower beats and grooves of the best Detroit hip hop of recent years – a scene that Dwele indeed was a player in before finding his soul muse. Great stuff – similar enough to some of his contemporaries – but still wholly unique in Dwele's embrace of a bright, sunny, polished sound that still manages to maintain naturally soulful grit and grease! The title track is a classic – crackly, thumping beats, sweetly chiming keys, and capital M Moody vocals – and many others are nearly as strong! Do these guys ever lose their touch? We think not – as this album, the group's umpteenth, is pretty darn great! Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick pulled out all the stops on this set – working with a range of vocalists that includes Joy Rose, Kelli Sae, Tony Momrelle, Joy Malcolm, and Brazilian soul legend Ed Motta! The range of voices on the set really gives it a lot of depth – moving past the easy jazz funk moments of earlier sets, and going for an all-solid, all-soulful approach that really blows our mind! Great stuff all the way through – maybe their best album in years – and a record you'll be playing into the next decade. A really great return to form from Angie Stone – a singer that we maybe have taken for granted a bit over the years, but who can still really knock it out of the park with a record like this! The set's a great example of mainstream R&B at its best – tunes that are heartfelt and captivating, and wonderfully well put-together – music that's a key part of the rich legacy served up on Angie's other records, but which has a freshness that makes it more than worth the wait since her last album too! Musiq Soulchild makes a great guest appearance on "The Gym" – and other cuts include "Kiss You", "Love Is Real", "Good Man", "All I Need", "High", "Love The Feeling", and "Old Thang Back". CD
