✨✧ India ArieTestimony Vol 2 – Love & Politics ... CD
Soulbird/Universal, 2009. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Chapter two, and an even deeper set than India Arie's first Testimony album – a record that shows a lot of growth in India's music, and a style that's even more mature and righteous than before! Arie's acoustic guitar is a key part of the instrumentation, and the album features a fair bit of mellower tracks too – so that there's a sense of intimacy in the music that's really great – the perfect setting for India's positive thinking and spiritual growth, which is documented somewhat in her copious notes inside the album's booklet! Most tunes have a warm glow, but one that's never smooth or commercial – and guests on the album include Musiq Soulchild, Gramps Morgan, Dobet Gnahore, and Terrell Carter. Titles include "Long Goodbye", "Chocolate High", "Ghetto", "Therapy", "River Rise", "Pearls", "Better Way", "Yellow", and "He Heals Me". CD
(Still sealed, small cutout hole through case.)

Erykah BaduMama's Gun ... CD
Universal, 2000. Used ... $3.99
A millennial classic from Erykah Badu – a set that came along right as the current century was starting up, to show a soulful path that would keep things strong for many years to come! The album grabbed a bigger audience than Erykah's first, but still kept things strong – really focusing in on that amazing vocal style that made the singer such a unique talent – and which always had edges that were sharper, and runs that were deeper, than some of her contemporaries who might be able to trick a phrase with a bit of spirit, but never deliver the whole thing in the way that Badu can! Themes are both personal and hinting at her political turns to come – and titles include "Kiss Me On My Neck", "Didn't Cha Know", "My Life", "AD 2000", "Bag Lady", "In Love With You", and "Booty". ✨✧ Shaun EscofferyStrong Enough ... CD
Universal (UK), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We've loved the music of Shaun Escoffery for many years now – right from that time when he emerged from the UK scene as key talent in the Omar generation – the kind of strong songwriting voice and confident singer that really helped mark a difference from the world of soul in the US! Escoffery has evolved wonderfully over the course of his superb recordings – and here, he continues to grow even more – coming on strong, and maybe with more of a 60s soul inspiration than ever before – kind of a romping, vibrant approach to the music that echoes the Motown generation, while still also sounding immediately contemporary, and graced with a production style that maybe makes Shaun's vocals sound even more powerful than ever! We've been waiting decades for Escoffery to get the international fame he deserves – and maybe this record is the one that will put him over the top, given the strength of the songs and the overall set as a whole. Titles include "River", "Imagine", "Lucky", "Soldier", "Heat", "With These Eyes", "Need To Believe", "Candle", "You Remind Me", and "Surrender". CD

Monday Michiru & OthersCo-Collaborator Works Of Monday Michiru ... CD
Universal (Japan), 2007. New Copy ... $13.99
Great grooves from Monday Michiru – a Soul Source collection that brings together a wealth of Monday's dancefloor work with a host of other artists! The tunes here are all upbeat and nicely grooving – very much that soulful Soul Source dancefloor vibe – and the package is a nice reminder that although Monday's been hitting some great mellow notes of late, she's also still one of the best club-oriented talents from the Japanese scene. A number of these tracks are from hard to find singles, and collaborators here include Da Lata, Jazztronik, Soul Source, Masters At Work, Joe Claussell, and Mondo Grosso. Titles include "Butterfly" by Mondo Grosso with Monday Michiru, "You Make Me (Studio Apartment rmx)" by Monday Michiru, "The Right Time (Jephte's King Street vokal)" by Monday Michiru, "The Real Thing" by Soul Source Productions with Monday Michiru, "Tiger Eyes (English version)" by Jazztronik with Monday Michiru, "New Beginnings" by Monday Michiru with Da Lata, "ADDP" by M-Flo with Monday Michiru, "Sunshine After The Rain (MAW 12" mix)" by Monday Michiru, and "Higher (Spiritual Life voc)" by Monday Michiru with Joe Claussell. ✨✧ Meshell NdegeocelloWorld Has Made Me The Man Of My Dreams (limited edition) ... CD
Universal, 2007. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing departure in sound for Meshell Ndegeocello – a record that firmly delivers on the earlier promise of her Article 3 EP! As with that one, the sound here is quite different than the funky soul of Meshell's earliest work back in the 90s – an almost-experimental blend of fuzz, funk, fusion, dub, and soul – served up with lots of darker undertones, and a range of rhythms that are sometimes pretty intense! There's almost an early 80s arty sort of feel going on – a mode that takes us back to that great time in the post-punk, post-disco years when barriers between styles had broken down a bit – allowing artists to express themselves in really unique new ways. And in a world where so many Neo Soul artists seem in danger of a high convergence of modes and cliches, Meshell's found some tremendous new territory for herself – and has reminded us that she's still got some much sharper edges than her contemporaries. A host of great guests really help Meshell find her groove here – including Sy Smith on vocals, Oliver Lake on saxophone, James Newton on flute, Robert Glasper on piano, and Graham Haynes on cornet. Titles include "Haditha", "Evolution", "Virgo", "Lovely Lady", "The Sloganeer Paradise", "Elliptical", "Shirk", "Article 3", "Headline", "Michell Johnson", and "Solomon". CD

Raphael SaadiqInstant Vintage ... LP
Universal/Get On Down, 2002. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99 31.98
A tough title to live up to – but Raphael makes it happen! The album's as wonderful as you might think – all the deeply soulful styles Saadiq worked out with Tony Toni Tone, taken back through a historical range of soul music – firmly planted in a legacy that begins with Stevie Wonder, runs through Maxwell and D'Angelo, and which points the way towards the future of urban soul. Backings are very much in the beats-n-keyboards mode, but Raphael works out such a wide range of moods and modes that the album avoids any of the shortcomings of other albums in such a style. Includes guest performances by Angie Stone, Leslie Wilson, T-Boz, Calvin Richardson, and D'Angelo – and titles that include "Doing What I Can", "Be Here", "Still Pay", "You're The One That I Like", "Excuse Me", "Tick Tock", "People", "Faithful", "Make My Day", "Blind Man", "Different Times", "What's Life Like", and "Skyy, Can You Feel Me". ✨✧ Amy WinehouseFrank ... CD
Universal/Island (Canada), 2003. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stunning debut from UK soul singer Amy Winehouse – a vocalist with a sound that's instantly captivating, and which will be with us for years! Amy's clearly cut her chops in jazz, but also has a laidback and soulful personality – easily shifting between modes for the right mood of each song, without any of the pretensions that would ruin an album like this. The backings have a proud stepping feel that fits well with tunes like "In My Bed", "What Is It About Men", "F*ck Me Pumps", and "You Sent Me Flying" – really keeping Amy's spirit fresh throughout the whole set! ✨✧ Amy WinehouseLioness – Hidden Treasures ... CD
Universal, 2011. Used ... Out Of Stock
A (sadly) posthumous release from Amy Winehouse – a voice we loved for a couple good years before knowing how troubled she was in real life and now lament the loss of – and this set, largely put together by producer Salaam Remi turned out surprisingly well! It'd be pretty easy to bow to cynicism, but for our money, there's more than enough strong stuff here. It features production by Remi, plus Mark Ronson on a couple tracks, and it's a mix of styles that ably demonstrate Amy's depth as an interpreter. There's some great, kinda late night jazzy soul numbers, classic level 60s R&B and thoroughly modern hip hop soul – all with strong vocal performances from Amy. Includes "Our Day Will Come", "Between The Cheats", "Tears Dry (Original Version)", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow (2011)", "Like Smoke" feat Nas (and some eerily timely lyricism, as of this album's release date), "Valerie ('68 Version)", "Half Time", "The Girl From Ipanema", "Half Time", "Body & Soul" with Tony Bennett, "A Song For You" and more. Lady DonliEnjoy Your Life ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 2020. New Copy ... $26.99
The cover's got the look of a vintage set from the West African scene of the early 80s – and Lady Donli steps out here with an equally classic mode at times – but the set's also very contemporary at others, and really grabs our attention right away! The Lady's got a great style – mixing her own great vocals with rhythms that are heavy on acoustic percussion, but also have some great keyboards and other electric elements too – all nice and lean, and wrapped together with soul-drenched energy that maybe makes the set one of our favorite Afro funky titles in recent years! There's an occasional kick in the rhythms, but the tracks aren't straight club numbers either – as they really hold onto a funky core, and come together with a vibe that sets Lady Donli apart from the rest – and balance things out with some mellower numbers in English that feel more like contemporary Cali soul. The whole thing is really fresh, and with a true sort of universal soul that's so different than other records of this nature – on titles that include "Classic", "Bite The Dust", "With The Kindness", "Good Time", "Boomerang", "Answers", "Zaman Lafiya", "Around", "The Forbidden", and "Never Ending". ✨✧ KhruangbinLive At Lincoln Hall ... LP
Night Time Stories/Beat (Japan), 2020. New Copy ... $42.99
A great live set from this very funky trio – recorded in our home city of Chicago, but with an appeal that's pretty darn universal! The sound here is maybe even more lean than some of the studio work we've heard from Khruangbin – lots of interplay between the basslines and guitar, over tight drums that kick things out nicely in the open space of the venue – while the group take off and really jam their way through the longer length of the live tracks! There's a bit of vocals, but also lots of instrumental moments – and titles include "Evan Finds The Third Room", "Maria Tambien", "People Everywhere", "Como Me Quieres", "Lady & Man", and the special "Lincoln Hall Potpourri"! QwestlifeProphecy ... LP
Glitterbox, 2020. New Copy 2LP ... $28.99
That's a retro-styled logo on the cover, and it really gets at the spirit of the sound that Qwestlife is laying down – a mode that hearkens back to 70s club, but which also understands the warmer side of house music too – served up in a blend that reminds us of the early years of Incognito, and maybe some of the best from Joey Negro and the Sunburst Band! One track has more of an old school hip hop vibe – but that's OK with us, as it features guest work from Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Melle Mel, and Scorpio – and most of the rest are slamming club bangers, done with a very soulful groove – on titles that include "Don't Break My Heart", "Can't Stop (boogie mix)", "Hit It Off (disco soul version)", "Cut You Loose", "Give Me A Minute", "Shooting Star", "Universal Soldier", and "What You Like". Marlon SaundersEnter My Mind ... CD
Soul Brother (UK), 2003. New Copy ... $9.99
A stunning debut from singer Marlon Saunders – a fantastic male vocalist who's gonna be huge! Marlon's got a smooth and seductive vocal approach that really takes us back to mellow 70s Isley Brothers, later ballad tracks from the O'Jays, and even a bit of the best work from Marvin Gaye – classic-styled vocals that have a universal soul appeal, sung with a confidence and depth of expression that's rare for male singers in the current age! Marlon's known for his earlier work with the group Jazzhole, but on this set, he moves way ahead of that group – emerging as a bright new soul star to rival the work of D'Angelo or Maxwell! Titles include "Inspiration", "You Move Me", "Enter My Mind", "Keep Doin What Ya Do", "Stone Out Of Hope", and "If It's Magic". CD
