Erykah BaduWorldwide Underground ... CD
Motown, 2003. Used ... $3.99
A nice one from Badu – one with a depth of feeling and genuine soulful vibes that live up to its title, despite the fact that she records for one of the world's biggest media conglomerates! It's all about the vibe here. Erykah rolls her syllables, scats and emotes feelings more than an actual narrative in the strongest of these cuts. It's not that she's forgone lyrics; but it's all about the ambience, not radio sing-a-longs. She also dives head first into her organic soul and hip hop hybrid sound a little more sparingly, but still better than any of the ladies that followed her lead after Baduizm. She channels Donald Byrd on the great "Think Twice", which is pretty indicative of the vibe as a whole. The groove is sorta mellow, but in a very tripped-out way, with deep organ washes and synth, scratchy soul guitar, and crisp organic beats. There's an appearance by Dead Prez on "Steady On The Grind", and a really sweet old school flavored remake of the great "Love Of My Life" track from the Brown Sugar soundtrack with Queen Latifah and Bahamadia, but for the most part Erykah is sweating soul on her own spiritual plane here. It's gonna take a little while to sink in, but this may be her best album (despite whatever naysaying BS you may read in mainstream reviews.) Tracks include "Bump It", the great single "Danger", "Woo", "Back In The Day" and "I Want You". CD

Aloe BlaccLift Your Spirit ... CD
Interscope, 2014. Used ... $2.99
Real spirit-lifting sounds from Aloe Blacc – a set that starts with a sense of righteousness right on the very first track – almost a gospel sense of spirit, mixed with Aloe's wonderfully secular groove! The beats are lean, the vocals are clean, and the record's got a tight snap all the way through – that hip fusion of modes that Aloe Blacc's been serving up for years, but which may well push him towards an even bigger audience this time around – thanks to the album's sharp production, and his ever-increasing songwriting talents. DJ Khalil produced the album – and titles include "The Man", "Here Today", "Wake Me Up", "Chasing", "Can You Do This", "Ticking Bomb", and "Red Velvet Seat". CD

✨✧ ChoklateChoklate ... CD
Kajmere, 2006. Used ... Just Sold Out!
More proof that the west coast scene is serving up some of the freshest soul in recent years – and a crackling little set from Seattle singer Choklate! Choklate works in a style of hip hop-influenced soul that's very much in keeping with her placement on the Kashmere Sound label – a mode that's often cosmic and filled with a crackling sense of electricity in the beats – yet still smooth and deep enough to rival some of the better-known acts in Neo Soul! There's a freshness here that we really like – a way of using simple elements in a different way, without resorting to any tricks or posturing to put the set over. Titles include "Thank You", "Never Change", "Love It", "Dedicated To Music", "Getting Is Good", "Long Way", "Waitin", "Now What", and "Bigger Than You". CD

Foreign ExchangeConnected (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Foreign Exchange, 2004. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99 29.98
The start of a great legacy for Foreign Exchange – a duo made up of equal parts MC Phonte of Little Brother and Dutch production wiz Nicolay! The record was a pretty fitting departure for Phonte – whose crew re-ignited the southern hip hop underground for cats without the pimp crunk sound, and provided a pretty amazing launching pad for 9th Wonder. Phonte brings much of the same flow and style, but the beats by Nicolay are firmly of the soaring, spacey keys and echoey thumping beats school – the kind that would sound as great behind Amp Fiddler as it does behind a laidback rhymer. The tasty mix of thoughtful lyrics (largely recorded by 9th Wonder) and lackadaisical delivery adapts as well to Nicolay's space soul production aesthetic. It's a deep, chiming listen all the way through – with appearances by Yahzarah, Critically Acclaimed, fellow Little Brother MC Big Pooh and others. Tracks include "Von Sees", "Raw Life", "Let's Move", "Nic's Groove", "Sincere", "Brave New World", "The Answer", "Come Around", "Happiness", "All That You Are" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Emily KingEast Side Story ... CD
J Records, 2007. Used ... $1.99
A tight little debut from Emily King – a blue-eyed soul singer from New York, and a bright new talent who's destined for big things! Although younger than some of her contemporaries, Emily's got a voice that's bold and strong – a contemporary soul approach that's never too cliched or commercial, and which has a nice sense of poise. Emily plays acoustic guitar alongside her vocals, yet the album avoids any "acoustic soul" traps, thanks to tight production from Chucky Thompson, who still lets the beats take the lead on most tunes. Titles include "Colorblind", "Alright", "You Can Get By", "Hold Me", "U & I", "E Melody", and "Walk In My Shoes", which features a guest appearance by Lupe Fiasco. CD

Meshell NdegeocelloCookie – The Anthropological Mixtape ... CD
Maverick/Warner, 2002. Used ... $3.99
There's been a big break since Meshell Ndegeocello's last album – but from the sound of the album, it's been worth it! One of the baddest soul singers of the past decade is back in business, and sounding better than ever – serving up a fierce blend of beats and vocals, done in a more laidback format than her previous albums, one that makes for an album that's even more compelling and personal. Titles include "Earth", "Criterion", "Barry Farms", "Legged Griot Trio", "God, Fear, Money", "Hot Night", "Priorities", "Trust", and "Akel Dama". CD
