Joe Loco was one of the most amazing early Latin piano talents, and in an album like this, you can really hear him go to work in a savage way! On this set, Joe moves all over the keys in a number of different ways – from heavy left-handed stride playing, to light and lovely jazz soloing, to hard and rhythmic Latin grooving. The backing is spare, with mostly conga and bongo behind Joe, so you hear his amazing piano work right up front, in a way that doesn't always happen on other albums of his. Sure, Monchito's name makes you think that he might be Machito – but the groove here is quite different, a snapping hard take on the cha cha that made Fiesta one of the greatest labels at the genre! Percussion is nice and hard, horns are plenty tight, and there's lots of interesting instrumental twists that keep things interesting. This isn't really a greatest hits album – but it is a good sampling of some of his better (and better-recorded) work during the postwar years, and almost all of the tracks have a nice hard groove to them. Great stuff by Noro – featuring his haunting piano lines spun out over spare backing by percussion only, in a manner that you don't always find on his other recordings. A few tracks have larger orchestrations, but they're still pretty darn tight, and have a great hard sound to them. The set's a nice one, and was put out by the Latin branch of RCA in the early 60s. Titles include "Quien Sara", "Piel Canela", "Campanitas De Cristal", "Silencio", and "Serenata Ritmica". LP, Vinyl record album
