La ClaveLa Clave (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Verve, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
An incredible album of Latin funk – the only-ever record from this west coast combo headed by the legendary Benny Velarde! Benny's a name that you might recognize from earlier, straighter Latin dates for Fantasy – or for countless studio work during the 70s – but here, he's really got a talent for a funky 70s groove – and manages to hit a unique space that's somewhere between conventional funk, west coast Latin, and some of the hippest blacksploitation grooves of the time! The album also features some under-credited work from Lalo Schifrin – who was tied to the project somehow (Velarde claims that the record was killed by MGM upon release because of a feud with Lalo) – but never really fully credited in the notes. There's a definite link here with some of Schifrin's funkier soundtrack of the period – a great blend of jazzier elements and headier 70s funk – all served up with a tightness that has made the record one of our favorite funky treasures for years! Titles include "The Ghetto", "Latin Slide", "Who You Fooling", "Road Runner", "Soul Sauce", "Cocoa Leaf", and "Move Your Hands". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Pucho & The Latin Soul BrothersYaina (180 gram pressing) (2024 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Right On/Ubiquity, Early 1970s. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Great stuff from Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers – still grooving hard in the early 70s, with a nice mixture of Latin funk and sweet 70s jazz grooving. The group's as strong as ever – and still features the amazing Pazant Brothers, as well as William Blivins on vibes, Harold Alexander on flute, and Leo Williams on guitar. The best cuts have an uptempo groove that's right in the NuYorica vein – but even the mellower cuts have a strong dose of jazz and soul, very much in the vein of groups like Ocho. Features a version of Neal Creque's "Cease the Bombing", Kenny Burrell's "Chitterlings Con Carne", and a nice mellow version of Coltrane's "Naima". Also includes the great originals "Inside The Corn" and "Hard Hats"! LP, Vinyl record album

Willie RodriguezAt The Happenin' ... LP
Fonseca/Andale, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 19.99
Plenty happenin' here – a wealth of boogaloo grooves, mad Latin jazz riffs, and lots lots more – all served up on a platter that's easily one of the most cooking ever from trumpeter Willie Rodriguez! Like other releases on the Fonseca label, there's a nicely messed-up groove going on – a style that easily shifts between different Latin modes in search of the rawest sound possible – without any thought of mainstream convention, or the sort of straighter-laced sounds that might have played with the suburban crowds. Willie's band is clearly nice and youthful, and more than willing to follow his leadership – working equally well on both the English and Spanish language tunes on the set. Titles include "Boogaloo Hay", "Sansuyo", "Mi Guajira", "Mi Shingaling", "The Clock", "What You Want Is Boogaloo", "7th Ave Train", and the very tasty "Descarga El Bravo"! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gerardo FrisinaHi Note ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2003. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Hi Note, indeed! Gerardo Frisina's latest is awe-inspiring – a completely seamless blend of Italian and Latin jazz, bossa rhythms and percussion, and some of the most tasteful and naturally blended electronic elements you could ever expect to hear on an album so steeped in a genuine affinity for live jazz instrumentation! If memory serves, earlier Frisina recordings relied a bit more on the production side of the coin, but this one's so strong on great instrumentation we're rendered pretty close to speechless. Lots of great horn arrangements, rolling bass lines and piano, sublime vibes and driving drums and percussion. Totally sweet throughout – this is way up there with the best dancefloor jazz Schema's ever released! Tracks include "Inviolatin", "Joyas", "Bluesanova", "Beyond The Moon", "Ombroso", "Sophisticated Samba" and more. (New Grooves, Latin) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Joe BataanSalsoul (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Mericana/Salsoul, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A landmark album from Joe Bataan – so great, that it made the entire record company change its name from their original Mericana to the better-known Salsoul – which would later rule the world with a host of disco classics! The record has Joe really bursting out after his seminal Latin Soul work of the late 60s – blending Latin rhythms and American soul into a whole new style of music – one that Joe called "Salsoul", because of it's mixture of salsa and soul – upbeat, funky, and definitely a precursor to the later sound that Salsoul would release with soul and funk groups. The blend is fantastic, a real milestone in the NuYorican scene – and handled perfectly by Joe on every cut! There's some massive Latin funk on here, including the tracks "Latin Strut" and "Aftershower Funk", plus some straighter Latin jazz, like "Sunny Gets Blue Mambo", and a great Latin Soul cut with English vocals called "Johnny". ✨✧ Bio RitmoBio Ritmo (with bonus tracks & download) ... LP
Locutor/Peace & Rhythm, 2002. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The first full album from Bio Ritmo – a contemporary Latin combo with a smoking, jazzy sound! The group have a tightness that reminds us of mid 70s Fania Records – or some of the best indie label albums coming out of the Puerto Rican scene – lots of heavy rhythms at the bottom, well-crafted horn parts, and soaringly soulful vocals in Spanish, sung by Rei Alvarez. At the time of its release, the set was a real surprise – one of the first in a scene of younger musicians who were really doing a great job of spinning fresh takes on classic Latin modes – and years later, it's still one of the best! Titles include "Hermano", "El Rayito", "Atrevete", "La Hamaca", and "El Cambio". 2LP version features bonus live tracks as well! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mongo SantamariaAfro Roots (Mongo/Yambu) ... LP
Fantasy, 1958/1959. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A nice Prestige 2-fer collecting two early sides Mongo cut for Fantasy in the late 50s. The first, released under the title Mongo, is a no-nonsense batch of Latin jazz tracks, arranged by himself and Francisco Aguabella, who's sort of the co-leader of the group on the set! Players include Emil Richards, Paul Horn, Armando Pereza, Carlos Vidal, and Willie Bobo – and as you can imagine by that lineup, there's plenty of heavy duty percussive action! Jose Chombo Silva plays a bit of tenor – and titles include "Chano Pozo", "Mazacote", "Los Conguitos", and "Afro Blue". Yambu, another of Mongo's great early records, is the second LP of the set. It's got a spooky Afro-Cuban sound, and a great assortment of drummers that includes Francisco Aquabella, Carlos Vidal, Willie Bobo, and Modesto Duran. The overall vibe is much more traditional than Mongo's other albums – and there's none of the pop Latin jazz of his years at Columbia records, or his "Watermelon Man" era at Riverside. Cuts include "Mi Guanguanco", "Timbales & Bongo", "Yeye", and "Columbia", and the sound is nice and raw. LP, Vinyl record album
