One of the sweeeeet club groovers recorded by Joe Bataan in the the early 80s – and an album that has a bit more of a disco feel than before, but which still stays firmly in the Latinized Salsoul sound that Bataan helped to forge and name! Joe's vocals are great – still honest and with a lot of integrity, and filled with the themes of confused love and identity that have always made his records some of the best of the New York scene. There's some nice electro touches amidst the grooves – but not too many – and titles include "Mestizo II", "Super Girl", "When We Get Married", and "Ling Ching Tong". LP, Vinyl record album

An early 70s session from Celia Cruz & Tito Puente – but one that's recorded with much rootsier touches than you might guess from the date! The album's kind of a precursor to Celia's further rise in the 70s salsa scene in New York – and offers up a nice reworking of older themes and sounds, put together here with a sense of clarity that stands out from some of the earlier Cruz/Puente collaborations. The mighty Joe Cain produced, and arrangements are all by Tito – on titles that include "Vaca Pinta", "De Noche", "Bonco", "Tatalibaba", "Extrano Amor", "Mi Rico Son", and "A Todos Mi Amigos". A Latin soul party – beyond compare! The album's a completely wonderful live set that really captures the energy, excitement, and warm sociability of the hip New York scene at the end of the 60s. The music is stunning – a freewheeling blend of jazz, soul, and Latin themes – played with effortless ease by a lineup that includes Joe Bataan, Ray Barretto, Willie Colon, Larry Harlow, Bobby Quesada, Louie Ramirez, Ralph Robles, and some of the other heavy-hitters of the Latin soul years. Cool 60s work from guitarist Snuff Garrett! Maria Elena takes a host of older Latin themes and tunes them towards a hip 60s style – using the overdubbed guitar approach of the 50 guitars group, and really stretching the sound out wide towards the farthest reaches of both speakers! Snuff Garrett's guitar is in the lead, but it's also cast here in a pretty full sound – one that makes for a spacious quality that still sounds pretty darn great all these many years later. A nice mix of 70s salsa and more traditional themes – part of the ever-evolving Pacheco sound during the great years of Fania, served up here with richly-ranged vocals from Hector Casanova! Casanova seems to push things a bit more than Pete El Conde Rodriguez did with Pacheco before – not only in terms of his vocals, but also in the overall aesthetics of the tunes, which seem to have a pan-historical feel. Don't let the title fool you, because it's similar to the album that Ricardo Ray and Bobby Cruz started off the 70s with – El Bestial Sonido – but the record's something quite different indeed! This set has Ricardo and Bobby exploring a more spiritual side of their music – one that's still socially conscious, and still plenty heavy on the Puerto Rican salsa of their fame – but one that also features all original material with themes of faith and redemption. Of course, if you're not a Spanish speaker, all you'll really notice is that the album's got plenty of salsa grooves – and at some level, that's really the genius of the album – as Ray and Cruz pushed a new sensibility into mainstream salsa audiences.
