✨✧ Joe BataanSingin' Some Soul ... LP
Fania, 1972. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
One of the most soulful records ever recorded by Joe Bataan – a sweet blend of harmony soul and east coast styles, done in a mode that's a bit less Latin than some of his earlier records – but really wonderful overall! The style here is almost late 60s Philly soul – particularly that of the Intruders, O'Jays, or other harmony-heavy groups – and the production has a rootsy edge that really gets at the honesty in Joe's approach. And given Joe's wonderful approach to these heartfelt tunes, we hardly miss the Latin rhythms at all – as we're really in love with his soul tunes here! Titles include "Ordinary Guy", "Unwed Mother", "Young Gifted and Brown", "Under the Street Lamp", and "I'm No Stranger". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited, numbered pressing from 2010.)

Angel CanalesSabor (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Alegre/Craft, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 28.99
Possibly the greatest album ever from Angel Canales – a 70s salsa classic through and through, and one with great links between the New York scene and Canales' Puerto Rican roots! The tunes are wonderfully heartfelt throughout – sung with a youthful sense of soul that's far different than some of the more emotive modes of previous generations of Latin singers – in a way that really scored big with the younger generation at the time, and which makes Canales one of the key forces helping to change the sound of the music in the 70s. Instrumentation is nice and tight – acoustic small combo work with two trombones, trumpet, baritone sax, flute, piano, bass, and percussion – under musical direction by Juan Torres. Titles include "Lejos De Ti", "Perico Macona", "La Hiedra", "Sol De Mi Vida", "Sabor Los Rumberos Nuevos", and "El Cantante Y La Orquesta". LP, Vinyl record album

Gerry Mulligan & Astor PiazzollaReunion Cumbre ... CD
Random (Argentina), 1974. Used ... $2.99 4.99
A magical meeting of two tremendous talents – saxophonist Gerry Mulligan and bandoneon player Astor Piazzolla – heard here in a rare Italian recording from the 70s! The album's a really unique effort for both musicians – a bit more pensive and thoughtful than some of Piazzolla's usual work from the 70s, and much less jazz-based than Mulligan's other records – more in a soundtrack mode, and one that seems to have echoes of Gato Barbieri's score to Last Tango In Paris! Like that great record, this one mixes Argentine styles with freer, more fluid ones – updating roots with a 70s sense of sophistication, and really letting Gerry Mulligan take off in long, open-ended solos that are among some of his best work of the decade. Other instrumentation includes marimba, guitar, keyboards, and percussion from Tullio De Piscopo – plus a bit of strings as well – and titles include "20 Years Ago", "Close Your Eyes & Listen", "Deus Xango", "Aire De Buenos Aires", "Summit", and "Years Of Solitude". (Jazz, Latin) CD
(Out of print.)

VariousPiconema – East African Hits On The Colombian Coast ... LP
Rocafort (France), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $30.99 35.99
A really revelatory collection – one that showcases a West African influence on sounds in Colombia – in a way that's almost a further shift of the way that Afro-Cuban sounds had an impact on Congolese and other rhythmic styles on the other side of the Atlantic! The music often features guitar lines lifted from a highlife tradition, mixed with rhythms that are a bit more straightforward – in some examples of the benga style in action, but blended with a more diverse array of sounds as the set moves on! The package is very well-researched, and is overflowing with work we'd never have heard otherwise – titles that include "Bi Sophia No 1" by Maroon Commandos, "Ateka" by Issa Juma & Waanyka, "Diabanza" by Orchestre Shika Shika, "Safari" by Viva Makale, "Trouble (part 1)" by La Mangelepa, "Wakumbuke Wazai" by Les Kilimambogo, and "Safi" by Lawi Somona. (Global Grooves, Latin) LP, Vinyl record album
