Cuba descarga – played American style! The set's a killer bit of Latin jazz from the New York scene of the 60s – a really brilliant effort headed up by Osvaldo Chihuahua Martinez – who plays both timbale and guiro – in a crack lineup that also features Chocolate Armenteros on trumpet, Chombo Silva on tenor sax, Manfredo Lee on guiro, and Dick Meldonial on flute – all players that get plenty of space to show off their talents here – especially on the solo moments, which really take off from the straighter vocal passages. Percussion is tremendous too – thanks to congas from Enrique Navarro – and titles include "Oye Lo Pollo", "Chihuahua En Timbales", "Cosquilla", "El Cavallo", "Cuban Night", and "Coco De Agua". Stan the man, grooving in a sweet Latin mode! The paring of Kenton modernism and Latin rhythms might seem an odd combination – but it works beautifully on this session by adding in rich tones and shades of colors to the lively percussion in the set! Kenton's orchestra is augmented by a great percussion section that includes Mike Pacheco, Willie Rodriguez, and Tommy Lopez – and horn players like Don Sebesky, Charlie Mariano, and Rolf Ericson really flesh out the tunes with some fluid ensemble work. Titles are mostly originals by Roland, and include "Siesta", "Mission Trail", "Agua Marine", "Chocolate Caliente", and "Opus In Chartreuse Cha Cha Cha". A percussion heavy Latin set from the start of the 80s – one that has a very classic Cuban descarga approach to the instrumentation, yet which also sparkles with some more contemporary arrangements as well! Chico Alvarez handles most of the vocals, and plenty of percussion too – but there's also some great players in the mix on other instruments too – including Felix Vega and Chocolate Armanteros on trumpets, Jose Rodriguez on trombone, and Xavier Lynch on some mighty nice soprano sax and baritone – really giving the whole record a nicely jazzy vibe! Yet the percussion persists too, and with a bit of tres from Victor Trias, there's plenty of very rootsy elements to the record too – on titles that include "Chino's Yambu", "Rumba En El Solar", "Con El Ritmo Del Tambo", "El Eden De Los Roncos", "Pineiro", "Esa Brujeira", and "Yo Tengo A Chango". One of Eddie Palmieri's greatest albums of the 70s – even though it was recorded for a major label! Like a number of his old counterparts in the New York indie world at the time, Eddie made a move to Columbia Records in the late 70s – a shift that should have dampened his soul, but which only served to set him free in a broad wash of new styles! The sound here is fuller than before, but in a really great way – a style that takes the inventive rhythms and piano work of Eddie's earlier albums, and infuses it with that breakout groove of the late Nuyorican generation – a style that was both keenly aware of tradition, yet also able to communicate the local flavor of the New York scene to an increasingly global audience! Most of the album's in a Latin jazz mode, but there's also some great soul touches on the set from time to time – and tracks range from spare, raw percussive numbers to others that have a swirling set of arrangements that really take off. Soloists include Ronnie Cuber and Afredo "Chocolate" Armenteros, plus a great lineup that includes Franceso Aquabella, Dom Um Romao, and the other Palmieri, Charlie, on piano and organ – and most of the vocals are in choro format. A stunning set from the great Ray Perez – the Venezulan pianist and Latin bandleader who cut some killer records back in the day, but hardly ever got the global fame he deserved! As with some of Ray's other gems from the time, the music here is nicely offbeat – partly in that small combo New York mode of the Joe Cuba generation, but titled in all these nicely fresh directions with inventive arrangements and offbeat production – all perfect to get the best sort of energy out of Ray's cool combo – a lineup that features two trumpets, piano, bass, drums, and plenty of percussion! A pretty sweet late 70s salsa set from Chamaco Ramirez – a wonderful singer best remembered for his work in the 60s & 70s for bandleader Tommy Olivencia – and this is the one-and-only solo album to Chamaco's name! Alive & Kicking was released in 1979, and in a bit of sad irony, came out just a few years before Ramirez was killed, but sad history aside, it's a nice little record! Arrangements are by Javier Vazquez – and the group features lots of strong trumpet from Chocolate Armanteros, and tenor from Mario Rivera. Excellent collection of tracks from Salsoul's great Latin series from the mid 70's! Despite the "disco" in the title, most of the tracks on here are straight salsa, and the LP features tracks like "Bamboleate" by Libre, "Trompeta En Montuno" by Chocolate, "Adelante" by Cachao, "Kimbo Kimbisa" by Graciela, "Anabacoa" by Grupo Folklorico, and "Chico & The Man" by Joe Bataan.
