Angel CanalesSabor (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Alegre/Craft, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 28.99
Possibly the greatest album ever from Angel Canales – a 70s salsa classic through and through, and one with great links between the New York scene and Canales' Puerto Rican roots! The tunes are wonderfully heartfelt throughout – sung with a youthful sense of soul that's far different than some of the more emotive modes of previous generations of Latin singers – in a way that really scored big with the younger generation at the time, and which makes Canales one of the key forces helping to change the sound of the music in the 70s. Instrumentation is nice and tight – acoustic small combo work with two trombones, trumpet, baritone sax, flute, piano, bass, and percussion – under musical direction by Juan Torres. Titles include "Lejos De Ti", "Perico Macona", "La Hiedra", "Sol De Mi Vida", "Sabor Los Rumberos Nuevos", and "El Cantante Y La Orquesta". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dos SantosLogos ... CD
International Anthem, 2018. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic album from this groundbreaking Latin combo from Chicago – one who've got an inclusive spirit that grabs together so many different elements of music and unifies them as one! The style isn't quite salsa, isn't Latin rock or jazz – but instead has so many strands of sounds coming together at once – not colliding, but really merging and making something beautiful and new in the process – always with a sound that's proud, righteous, and very aware of its power to change! In a time of borders and boundaries, the approach is especially welcome – and it's our guess that we'll be hearing plenty from Dos Santos in years to come. The album features some guest work from the Antibalas horns, arranged by Nick Mazzarella – plus cornet from Ben LaMar Gay – on titles that include "Cordva", "Purisma", "Manos Ajenas", "How Far Are We From Here", "You Are My Revolution", "Caminante", "Logos", "Return Y Regreso", and "Acabame". ✨✧ Fania All-StarsDelicate & Jumpy ... LP
Fania/Columbia, 1976. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A stunner of a record from the Fania All Stars – a tremendous attempt to move into a 70s soul vein, complete with Satin Soul arrangements from Gene and Billy Page! The record bubbles over with the funky orchestrations you'd expect from the best Barry White work at the time – strings soaring over snapping beats and warmly soulful instrumentation – bearing little resemblance overall to the earlier work of the Fania All Stars, but blowing our minds all the more because of the rich ability to change sound so much. There's load of wonderful funk tracks on the album – and titles include "Picadillo", "I'll See You Again", "Foofer Soofer", "Sabrosa", "Desafio", and a great cover of "Rosemary's Baby". LP, Vinyl record album
(White label test pressing, in full artwork cover.)

✨✧ David Murray Latin Big BandNow Is Another Time ... CD
Justin Time, 2003. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Dang! Does David Murray ever stop re-inventing himself? We think not – and this album is great proof of that fact! The set's a really tasty batch of Latin Jazz numbers – played to perfection by Murray and a host of excellent New York musicians, working together in large group format with a sound and style that's at the peak of perfection for this sort of recording. Murray wrote all the tunes, so the album goes way past the cliches of Latin-ized standards that you're probably sick of hearing anyway – and it's steeped in a soulful approach to the genre that really grabbed our ears from the first note! Titles include "Giovanni's Mission", "Sad Kind Of Love", "Mambo Dominica", "Break Out", and "Aerol's Change". (Jazz, Latin) CD
(Punch through barcode.)

✨✧ Pete RodriguezAt Last ... LP
Remo, 1964. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pre-boogaloo material from Pete Rodriguez – but still quite lively, in the manner of Joe Cuba, right before he cut his boogaloo sides! The album's a refreshing change from the early 60s pachanga groove – as Pete's group works hard on the percussion tip to strip down the grooves and give the proceedings a hard-edged finish. Vocals are by Richie Rodriguez and Alberto Gonzalez – and the album features two shorter descarga tracks, "Ya Tu Veras" and "La Magnifica", plus the tracks "Periquito", "Canallon", "No Quiero Lios", "Lo Se Todo", and "Oigan Companeros". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red label pressing with silver text – a nice copy!)
