A great Latin twist for Bobby Watson – an album that has the alto sax genius joining the Space Station combo of percussionist Ray Mantilla – for a session that's easily one of the most memorable moments of the time from both players! Watson has a depth of soul in his horn here that's really incredible – a way of grabbing us right from the start of a tune, and bringing things home strongly even with a bit of electric bass in the lineup, which might otherwise mar the acoustic vibe of the group. A dozen heavy groovers from the legendary Discos Fuentes – pulled from a time when the Colombian label was really finding its sound and strengths – mixing together older strands of Afro Cuban inspiration with a special vibe that would soon make their scene rival the Latin music power of New York and Puerto Rico! The percussion is pretty darn heavy on most of these tracks – almost a fusion of the rootsier modes of early years with some of the more sophisticated musical elements developed in the small combo years of the New York 60s Latin scene – but also touched with some styles that are completely Colombian, yet still in a formative early moment that's never predictable or commercial at all. A really top-shelf album from Justo Betancourt – a perfect illustration of the power of his vocals at their height! The set's got a really classic 70s salsa feel – a horn-heavy groove that almost effortlessly flows from a combo of strong players, topped by majestic vocals from Justo – stretching out soulfully with these wonderful inflections, timings, and turns that go far beyond the simple lyrics of the tunes. The record's almost a casebook study in the way that the Fania singers of the 70s could be completely expressive without resorting to any sort of over-emotive cliches – a new level of Latin masculinity in song, served up here with impeccable arrangements by Javier Vazquez. Smoking salsa from one of its greatest proponents in the 70s – the crowd-pleasing Ricardo Ray & Bobby Cruz ensemble, heard here at the height of their powers! Tracks here are mostly tight and lively – arranged by Ray and Cruz with help from Russel Farnsworth – but a few numbers also move into mellower modes too, and have Bobby's vocals taking on mainstream hits "My Way", "Soul & Inspiration", and "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" – but in a very different way than such hits might have been handled during the late 60s Latin Soul years. The approach here is more boundary-less – kind of a "hey, all music can be ours" sort of approach – and Bobby and Ricardo really move past simple boogaloo-ification of soul tracks into the more expansive territory that was their right. A series of new recordings – different than the mostly 78-based music we know from the Dust To Digital record company – yet one that's presented in a format that's every bit as compelling as some of the other global projects from the label! The recordings were done in Cadiz, almost as an ethnographic project – with under-recorded flamenco artists in a very lean setting – as a way of showing that at a grass roots level, flamenco is still very much alive and has a very vibrant role in contemporary Spain – one that's maybe even more powerful here than in glossier studio recordings of the music. A lost funky treasure – never issued before! For those not in the know, The Pazant Brothers (Ed & Al) were a duo of funky hornmen that first came to fame working with Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers – and then moved onto cut some great funky records of their own in the 70s. The pair formed a very tight group that had a killer funky sound – one that we'd easily rank right up there with the JBs and The Meters for hard, raw, power – but sadly, they only ever recorded one full album and a handful of singles – which is why this previously unissued concert is even more of an important treat! We have no idea what the folks at MOMA were thinking when they invited the Pazants down to get their groove in gear – but whatever the case, this CD is totally great! Forget the silly cover – which is way too cold and modern to get at the heart of the grooves – and forget the location too, because the tracks on the set sound like they were cut at some smoky club in Harlem, not in the colder midtown setting of MOMA. The whole thing's totally great – a massive batch of instrumental funk that leaves us to wonder why the heck this thing was never issued at the time.
