Ron Levy's Wild Kingdom —
Zim Zam Zoom ... CD Bullseye Blues, 1996. Used ...
Out Of Stock
One of the sweetest sets ever cut by organist Ron Levy – and a record that's done very much in the mode of the older Prestige soul jazz and jazz funk that first inspired his work! Of course, that relation to Prestige is no surprise – given that Ron's working here with Melvin Sparks on guitar and Idris Muhammad on drums – who both help give the record a feel that's a lot more classic than you might expect for the date. But the real star of the set is Levy, whose clean, lean lines on the Hammond B-3 recall the early genius of Charles Earland at its best! Titles include "Zim Zam Zoom", "Lost Tribes", "Sons Of Abraham", "Last Go Round", "Silver Cannonball", and "Lonely Avenue". (Deep Funk, Jazz)CD

James Williams —
Flying Colors ... CD Zim/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. Used ...
Out Of Stock
An early date from pianist James Williams – one that has him opening up in a very hip, soulful 70s mode – on both acoustic and electric piano! If you only know Williams from later years, when his phrasing became a bit more "classic", you'll really be surprised at the open flow of this set – as it's a whole group effort, with really wonderful work from Bill Easley on alto and flute, Bill Pierce on soprano and tenor, and Slide Hampton on trombone! Rhythm is from James Baker on drums, and Sylvester Sample on electric bass – the latter of which adds a nice current of warmth – and titles include "Stretching", "Soulful Bill", "Flying Colors", and "1977 AD". CD
Music from Marcus Wyatt, Bheki Mseleku, the Sheer Allstars, McCoy Mrubata, Moses Khumalo, Zim Ngqawana, Andy Narell, and Hotep Idris Galeta. (Global Grooves, Jazz)CD

Judgement ... CD Tippin, 2006. Used ...

Features George Garzone and Joel Frahm on tenor saxophone. CD
Japanese electric Miles, featuring 2 long tracks – "Zimbabwe" and "Gondwana" – spread out over the course of a sweet double live set! The album gives Miles and the group plenty of room to groove and stretch out – hitting notes that are both funky and noisy, often at the same time! Michael Henderson lays down some great bass work on the set, and major solos are by Sonny Fortune, Pete Cosey, and Reggie Lucas! Great stuff – and more proof that Miles in the 70s was a very very deep place! CD

Lezlie Harrison's a great singer, and she sounds especially wonderful here next to the Hammond B3 of Ben Paterson – a player who really seems to click with Lezlie's great approach! There's a slight current of soul in Harrison's music, but the music is definitely jazz – as she's got a richness of expression, and way of using her voice that we'd rank right up there with vocalists like Carmen Lundy or Dee Alexander – given plenty of space to open up and soar here in a small combo setting, with work also from Matt Chertkoff on guitar and Pete Zimmer on drums. The approach is great – very different than some straight old school Hammond/vocal session – as Harrison's take on the tunes is very fresh, with more contemporary approach to arrangements – on titles that include "Love Won't Let Me Wait", "Let Them Talk", "A Lover Is Forever", "What A Little Moonlight Can Do", "Fly Like An Eagle", and "Close Your Eyes".
