A sublime album by one of our favorite talents in 60s jazz – pianist Jack Wilson, making his second Blue Note appearance here amidst a group of other more likely label players that include Lee Morgan on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto, and Billy Higgins on drums! Despite the presence of those superstars, though, the album's still very much Wilson's own – featuring 4 tracks penned and played in his modally soulful vision, plus a great version of one tune by Frank Strozier – a player we'd find to be a very good companion to Wilson's style! The group's also noteworthy in that it features some excellent work from trombonist Garnett Brown – a player with a deeply soulful approach that adds in new dimensions to the tunes, and offsets the lightly lyrical touch of Wilson on the keys. The whole set's great – and titles include "Do It", "On Children", "Easterly Winds", "Nirvana", and "Frank's Tune". CD

A rare soul jazz session from alto saxophonist Leo Wright – a player that we mostly know from his bossa work of the early 60s! The session's extremely noteworthy as being one of the few to feature female organist Gloria Coleman – a player with whom Wright worked on her classic 1963 date Soul Sisters, and who returns here in a very similar hard-wailing sax-and-organ mode! Wright's work on alto is incredibly deep – with a sharper bite than much of his other 60s sessions, and a gutsy down-n-dirty quality that makes the record feel like one of the best organ jazz albums at the time from Prestige. Coleman's approach to the Hammond is great too – freely skipping around with a liberated sense of rhythm, in a way that matches Wright's every twist and turn with ease – and throws a few of its own into the mix as well! The group's completed by Kenny Burrell on guitar (also sounding harder here than usual!) and Frankie Dunlop on drums – and titles include some fresh originals "Poopsie's Minor", "State Trooper", "Blue Leo", "Blues Fanfare", and "Soul Talk". Sweet 70s work from saxophonist Pete Yellin – a set that's almost as noteworthy for its electric piano lines by Hal Galper as it is for Yellin's solos on alto and flute! Galper's warm keys really help add a lot to the session – bringing in a slightly righteous tone, even when tunes are mellow – and further enforcing the harder edges of the funkier numbers as well. In the Mainstream Records mode, the band is largeish, and tightly arranged – but never in a way that's too stiff or commercial. A nice dark undercurrent surfaces on most of the tunes, and titles include "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", "Tojo", "My Friend", "Norma", and "It's The Right Thing". CD

A really rare look at the scene in Basel, Switzerland in the mid 60s – a combination of modern jazz and older styles served up here by a few different groups! Perhaps the most noteworthy combo on the record is Modern Jazz Group Basel – a quintet that features work from latter bassist Isla Eckinger on trombone, with Andy Scherrer on tenor, Urs Ramseyer on piano, Louis Mermet on bass, and Peter Scmidlin on drums. Other combos include The Svannah Junkmen and South Street Saloon Sweepers – plus the Chester's Tea Pot Combo, a quartet with tenor from Chester Gill. LP, Vinyl record album
