An early moment of brilliance from Vincent Herring – and just the sort of set to make him one of the strongest young talents to emerge in jazz during the 90s! There's a rock-solid feel to the set – an approach that's steeped in classic hardbop modes, but which has traces of modernism too – never too overstated, but some sharper undercurrents that mark Herring's playing nicely as a bit deeper than the usual altoist. The rest of the group should get a good deal of credit, too – as players like Wallace Roney on trumpet and Mulgrew Miller on piano really share this sensibility with Herring. One of the hippest jazz groups going in Czechoslovakia during the 70s – the mighty Jazz Q, a cool fusion combo who really knew how to groove! The group's lineup includes a lot of electric keyboards and guitars – and while some tracks have them jamming out in a really rock-inspired way, there's some other tunes that open up with a great jazzy sound. Side two of the album kicks off with an amazing modal groover called "The Wizard" – a cut that builds and builds on riffs of bass, conga, and keyboards – before soaring into a sweet female lead vocal that sounds like Lani Hall at her best! Other tracks include "Lost Soul", "Starbird", "From Dark To Light", and "Epilog". CD features two bonus tracks – "Mlyn" and "Konstelace". CD

A well-titled set – in that it's got Oscar's piano in a fairly loose, soulfully relaxed setting with Sam Jones on bass and Bob Durham on drums. One of the funkiest albums ever from early 70s guitar wizard Melvin Sparks – his first for the short-lived Eastbound offshoot of Westbound, and done in a style that's even harder and rawer than his work for Prestige! The sound is lean and often a bit rough around the edges – with possibly more funk than even jazz in the mix – and players on the set include Caesar Frazier on organ, Bad Bascomb on bass, Ron Bridgewater on tenor, and Idris Muhammad on drums! Prestige funk maestro Bob Porter produced the whole thing, and gets a beautifully soulful sound out of all players – rounding out Melvin's totally cooking work on guitar with some equally great contributions from the rest. The first-ever session as a leader from British saxophonist Stan Sulzman – and a really beautiful record that fits in well with its placement on the Mosaic label from Graham Collier! Sulzman's got some angular tones that fit the style of the time – particularly in the way his British scene was cross-pollinating between jazz and progressive modes – and the set is equally noteworthy for the presence of the great John Taylor, who plays keyboards and even a bit of AMS synthesizer – really bringing this sense of warmth and depth to the music that's really wonderful! The rest of the group features Tony Levin on drums and percussion and Ron Mathewson on bass – and titles include the long title suite "On Loan With Gratitude", plus "GRS" and "Anagram". Evocative solo work from John Surman – working here in the lonely setting that seemed to come up more and more as his career went on! In addition to familiar sounds on soprano sax, baritone, and bass clarinet, Surman also plays some recorders as well – mixing in an airy, ethereal sound to the record that really fits the ECM mode. There's also a bit of synth as well – often played with a relatively organic feel, almost woodwind-like qualities that match the reeds nicely. A really fantastic record from legendary jazz guitarist Gabor Szabo – and one of his few 70s sides to capture the extended modal brilliance of his work in the 60s for Impulse and Skye Records! The tracks are all long and live, and performed by a very small combo – drums, bass, and keyboards – which is instrumentation that's much leaner than some of Gabor's studio sessions of the time, which often use bigger arrangements – all of which provides a setting that allows the guitar wizard to really stretch out with all these amazing tones, colors, and unusual phrases – the tripped-out magic that Gabor could do so well when he got a chance!
