Anderson's tenor gets lots of rich open space to roam around – with these deep tones that strongly echo a Coltrane legacy, almost more soulfully than other albums of this vintage – and Parker's bass is wonderful, as always, in a setting like this – and Drake's drums are a masterpiece of understatement. A fantastic record from vibist David Friedman – spare, hip, modern, and very moody! Friedman's playing vibes and marimba alongside David Samuels, who plays the same – and this twin-vibes approach sounds fantastic – especially as the record has no drums, just additional bass, plus flute by Hubert Laws – a very loose, open style that comes across with a completely unique sound! The approach is super-dope for any fan of laidback 70s vibes – and the tracks are never too free or way out, just gliding with this airy quality that's really wonderful – one of the best demonstrations of Friedman's great talents on record. Breathtakingly organic sounds from Jon Hassell – performing here live, and at a level that's a nice evolution from his studio modes in the earlier part of the 80s – with all sorts of long-blown lines, and nicely complex elements in the sound! Hassell handles both his famous electrified trumpet and keyboards, with a group that includes keyboards, guitar, bass, and percussion samples – all mixed live by Brian Eno, who definitely adds a darkness to the whole proceedings – recalling the Fourth World experiments that he and Hassell had done about a decade before, but with a quality that really respects all the growth that Jon went through as an artist in the intervening years. Parker plays in these great chromatic modes throughout – using some slight effects with his hollow-body electric, in the company of bassist Chris Lopes and drummer Chad Taylor – the latter of whom really helps make the album great, thanks to a fluid, open sense of rhythm – yet one that still always knows how to swing! There's more of a groove here than you might usually expect from Jeff, and a sensitivity too – and the album almost feels like the beginning of a rich new chapter in his career. Intimate piano work from Geri Allen – a set of solo performances, inspired by the music of Cecil Taylor, McCoy Tyner, and Herbie Hancock! There's definitely strong traces of Tyner and Hancock – given Allen's usually soulful undercurrent – but there's also a heavy dose of Taylor, too, as Geri really uses the freer space of the recording to stretch out in some pretty unbridled ways – really surprising us with her inventiveness, and still usually holding onto a rhythmic pulse somewhere deep in the mix. Titles include "Red Velvet In Winter", "Dancing Mystic Poets At Midnight", "Your Pure Self", "Flying Toward The Sound", and "Faith Carriers Of Life". CD

A sharp, exhilarating trio set from tenor sax great and AACM beacon Fred Anderson – a more stripped down and direct sound than some of the more spacious grooves of recent Anderson recordings, and really a masterful little gem! Anderson's trio features Harrison Bankhead on bass and Tim Daisy on drums, and moods on these longish numbers rolls from tight, muscular interplay that never gets too blunt or jagged thanks to the musicianship – to a far looser, more melodic dynamic. We're never disappointed by Anderson's later recordings, and this is another exceptionally strong one. Titles include the nearly half hour opening piece "Sunday Afternoon", plus "The Elephant And The Bee", "60 Degrees In November", "Wandering", "Springing Winter" and "Changes And Bodies And Tones". A fantastic group that just seems to get better and better each time we hear them – one comprised of some of our favorite Swedish avant players of the past decade or two – coming together here in a way that's even greater than the sum of its parts! There's a bold energy to the group that seems to take off from the Charles Mingus ensembles of the late 50s and early 60s – that balance of unified message and individual voices – painterly sometimes, swinging at others – with work from Johan Berthling on bass, Magnus Broo on trumpet, Eirik Hegdal on baritone, Goran Kajfes on cornet, Martin Kuchen on alto and tenor, Mattias Stahl on vibes, Andreas Werliin on drums, Alexander Zethson on piano, and Mats Aleklint on trombone. The core of the album features Chet fronting the original quartet with Russ Freeman on piano, plus some occasional guest guitar work – but a number of tracks also feature appearances by Bill Perkins and Jimmy Guiffre. A big overview of early work cut by Chet Baker's legendary quartet with pianist Russ Freeman – most of it from the group's initial time in the studio in 1953, but also featuring a handful of later sides from 1955, as well as some trio material by Russ on his own! The main Baker Quartet material here is presented in chronological order, and features some alternate LP and single versions of a few tunes, as well as alternate vocal and instrumental versions as well. A mighty jazzy Christmas from the Count Basie Orchestra – already great on their own in an instrumental mode – but joined here by a few different singers, including Carmen Bradford, Ledisi, and Johnny Mathis – all of whom add a little extra sparkle to the tunes! Pianist Ellis Marsalis also gets plenty of time in the spotlight – stretching out in the lead on piano on a few tunes, in a mode that recalls Basie's vamping in years past – and titles include "Let It Snow", "It's The Holiday Season", "Good Swing Wenceslas", "Winter Wonderland", "The Christmas Song", "Sleigh Ride", "Little Drummer Boy", and "Have Yourself A Merry Christmas". An obscure set, but a great one too – the only full album ever recorded by Flo Bennett, a singer who started in Denver, moved to LA, and managed to cut this sweetly jazzy session with help from arranger Ernie Freeman! The album's on the tiny Gift label, but it's got the care and poise of bigger-label sets from the time – particularly some of the late 50s girl singer sessions on RCA, especially those with a more jazz-based feel. The group's a small combo – with Plas Johnson on tenor, John Anderson on trumpet, and Irving Ashby on guitar – and the tunes themselves are mostly pretty fresh, and include some lesser-known mid-century numbers amidst more familiar standards. Flo's vocal style is nicely raspy at points – almost world-weary, despite a relatively young age – and songs include "Lonely Winter", "If You Were Me", "What To Do", "Half Past Lonely", "Saturday Night", "Out Of Town", "Laugh At Me", and "Never Been So Lost". Pretty mellow stuff from George Benson, but with some nice moments! Don Sebesky handled the arrangements for this set of larger backings – but Benson's guitar is right out front, hitting some super-dope lines at the best moments, stretching out from the warm Fender Rhodes or horn heavy backings. Highlights include "No Sooner Said Than Done", which has some very weird processing on the guitar; "Full Compass", which has some nice hard drums; and "Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams", a mellow moody track. Great stuff from one of our favorite singers of all time! June has a way with a ballad that still leaves us breathless – turning simple somber songs into dark tapestries of despair and loss, infused with a boozy maturity that makes the lyrics resonate with a sense of pain that's always missing from other versions of the tracks (if there are other versions of the tracks – as some of June's are so good that nobody ever dared touch the songs again!) This CD brings together 16 cuts that perfectly illustrate June's incredible talents, including a number from her classic Something Cool album, issued here in the stereo recordings, which are completely different from the mono ones, which were recorded at a different session years earlier. A rare and unusual chapter in the career of Al Cohn – and an incredible set cut in the mid 50s with Bob Brookmeyer on trombone! The style's a bit like that used by Al and Zoot Sims together – tightly arranged shorter tracks, with a focus on well-crafted horn work, but enough space to allow each of the leaders break out and express their personality on the record. The rest of the group features Mose Allison on piano, Teddy Kotick on bass, and Nick Stabulas on drums – and the arrangements are all pretty darn fresh, handled by Al and Bob themselves. Titles include "So Far So Good", "Winter", "Back To Back", "Shine", "Good Spirits", and "Lazy Man Stomp". CD

A magical session of equally-matched players – one that's less of a straight trio set than a joint collaboration between piano, bass, and drums! Stanley Cowell's work on the keys is certainly a strong force in the set – but the loose and lively drum work of Waits is every bit as much a key factor in the set, as is the bass work of Williams – which is recorded here with just the right sense of depth and tone to bring out the nuances in his playing. The whole thing dances amazingly with a sense of joy and life that surpasses most of Cowell's other small group work from the period – done with an energy that's quite different than the Strata East years, but no less compelling. Titles include "Winter Reflections", "Deceptacon", "Air Dancing", "Sendai Sendoff", "Christina", and "Sienna Welcome My Darling". CD

A great reunion of Buddy DeFranco and Oscar Peterson – two players who recorded together famously for Verve in the 50s, working here on an 80s date under the supervision of old Verve head Norman Granz! The setting here is even more loose and laidback than in the 50s – that mellow Pablo Records mode that seems to bring in a lot more feeling to the players than some of their dates for other labels at the time – and Buddy's lost none of the charm in his tone, playing the clarinet with a soulful swing that's almost more like an alto sax at times! Other players include Joe Pass on guitar, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Martin Drew on drums – and titles include "Summer Me Winter You", "Llovisna", "By Myself", "Joy Spring", "All Too Soon", and "Hark". A set that features music from three different sessions recorded by trumpeter Bill Dixon in the mid 60s – all pretty groundbreaking work, even all these many years later! First up is a quartet co-led by Archie Shepp and Bill Dixon – easily one of the greatest modern jazz pairings of the 60s! If you only know Shepp from his later work, you'll hear something very different here – as his tenor's often brought into tight focus with the trumpet of Dixon – in a blend of arrangement and freedom that's like that of Ted Curson and Bill Barron, but a lot more powerful overall! The tunes still have a sense of structure – and get great help from the bass of Don Moore and drums of Paul Cohen – but there's also some tremendously unbridled energy from the leaders, especially Dixon, who might not have sounded this great ever again. Titles include "Quartet" and "Trio". Next up is one side of an album that Dixon split with Shepp for Savoy – and Dixon's material here features a septet, with a great lineup that includes Ken McIntyre on alto and oboe, George Barrow on tenor, and both Hal Dodson and David Izenzon on basses. Titles include "Winter Song 1964" and "The 12th December". Last up is the seminal Intents & Purposes record – one of the few rare records cut by Bill Dixon during the 60s, and a perfect example of "new thing" jazz in action. Trumpeter Dixon plays in 3 different ensembles – a nonet, a quintet, and a duet – with players like Byard Lancaster, Reggie Workman, Robert Pozar, and Jimmy Garrison. The tracks are long, with an approach that begins with compositional structures, but which also showcases the avant solo talents of the players – in a manner that's similar to some of the Blue Note work by Anthony Williams or Grachan Moncur III. A darn tough record to find – and with the tracks "Voices", "Nightfall Pieces I & II", and "Metamorphosis". CD

Seminal "new thing" work by Bill Dixon and Archie Shepp! The album is divided in two – so that one side features work by Dixon, playing in a group with Ken McIntyre; and the other side features Shepp leading a combo that includes Ted Curson, John Tchicai, and Don Cherry. Both sides are some of the most seminal "new thing" sessions ever recorded, and they have a fantastic quality that far outstrips later work by both artists. First up is the album Ella Fitzgerald Wishes You A Swinging Christmas – a wonderful Holiday album that's stayed fresh for years! Ella's got a perfect style to interpret these numbers – working with Frank DeVol and Russ Garcia in a set of lightly jazzy versions of Christmas favorites like "Sleigh Ride", "Jingle Bells", "Winter Wonderland", "White Christmas", "Frosty The Snowman", and one of the best versions of "What Are You Doing New Years Eve" ever recorded! The Sound Of Christmas album by Ramsey Lewis is a classic – and probably one of the best-selling Christmas jazz albums of all time! Ramsey and his classic trio with Redd Holt and Eldee Young serve up a tight set of grooves based around Holiday favorites like "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", "Winter Wonderland", "Here Comes Santa Claus", "The Christmas Song", and "Sleigh Ride" – and also carve out a few nice originals like "Christmas Blues" and "The Sound Of Christmas". Side one features the trio on its own, and side two features added arrangements by Riley Hampton – swirling around to expand the groove even more! Christmas 64 – also issued as Christmas Cookin – is as cookin a Christmas album as you'll ever find! Jazz organ giant Jimmy Smith works with Billy Byers to craft some sublime instrumentals that have his Hammond interpreting Christmas classics like "We Three Kings", "White Christmas", "Silent Night", "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", and "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town". If you know Jimmy from the time, you know that he can really make tracks like these groove nicely – and take them to places you never expected! Last up is the album Have Yourself A Soulful Little Christmas, from guitarist Kenny Burrell – on which he grooves nicely and gently over arrangements by Richard Evans, perfectly crafted in that soul jazz mode of his 60s work for Chess – not Kenny's most challenging format, to be sure, but proof that he often works better in a more structured environment than a freer one. Genius work from Japanese trombonist Hiroshi Fukumura – working here at the helm of a twin-trombone group that also features the talents of Shigeharu Mukai – in a style that's filled with soul and free-thinking imagination! The two players work together beautifully here – avoiding any of the cliches of trombone-heavy groups from the past – and instead, using the open-ended Three Blind Mice label format to explore new ideas in jazz by hitting a spare, sensitive space that's really great. Sometimes tracks really take off and soar with the sort of inventiveness we'd expect from Slide Hampton at the time – at others, they work together more quietly to use the trombones as great shifters of sound and color. Tracks are all quite long, and other players include Hiroshi Tamura on piano, Tsutomu Okada on bass, and Shinji Mori on drums – on titles that include "Morning Flight", "Winter Song", "Cousin Mary", and "Soldier In The Rain". One of the best of the Stan Getz bossa nova sessions – and a record that features the great Laurindo Almeida on guitar – playing with more virtuosity than either Charlie Byrd or Joao Gilberto did on their collaborations with Getz! The record's got a driving rhythm section, with lots of long tracks, and nice laid-back solos by both Getz and Almeida – who's getting in some of his few jazz licks of the 60s here, working in a groove similar to that of his earlier sides with Bud Shank, but which sounds almost even better in the languid company of Getz. Cuts include "Outra Vez", "Winter Moon", "Maracatu-Too", and "Samba Da Sahra". CD

One of Donald Byrd's earliest sessions as a leader – a hard and heavy all-star set that features a quintet with Frank Foster on tenor, Hank Jones on piano, Kenny Clarke on drums, and Dave Chambers on bass. The tracks all are long and have that almost blowing session Savoy approach – free and easy, and a very different style that Byrd's more composed work with Gigi Gryce from the same time. It's great to hear Donald open up in such a setting – really getting an edge on titles that include "Star Eyes", "Long Green", "Winterset", and "Gotcha Goin & Comin". CD
