Art Ensemble Of ChicagoAlternate Express ... CD
DIW (Japan), 1989. Used ... $18.99
Don't let the "alternate" in the title fool you, because it's not like the Art Ensemble Of Chicago are getting all alt-rock or anything – nor is the album a set of alternate takes! Instead, the album's one of their best from the time – a well-crafted set of tunes, recorded in very familiar company in Chicago – issued only for the Japanese market by DIW. There's a richly organic quality to some of the tunes – as many of the numbers are sparer, more thoughtful tracks that focus on spare percussion and instrumental interplay between members of the group. The album also features the longer tune "Kush", which gets fairly outside at times – plus shorter numbers that include "Imaginary Situations", "And There Was Peace", "Whatever Happens", and "Alternate Express". ✨✧ Albert AylerReevaluations – The Impulse Years ... LP
Impulse, Late 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great collection of Albert Ayler's late work for Impulse – some of his most unusual sides ever cut to wax, and very different from his work on labels like ESP. The general feel is one of searching – as Ayler works in a number of different modes to try to reach new audiences, and hit new sounds. Some of these modes don't always work, but there's a rich emotional honesty to most of the album that keeps things extremely interesting, whatever the format. Titles include "Again Comes The Rising Of The Sun", "For John Coltrane", "Water Music", "Oh! Love Of Life", "Love Cry", "Drudgery", "New Ghosts", and "Holy Ghost". Includes a number of tracks that haven't been in print for years! LP, Vinyl record album

E1, 2010. Used ... Out Of Stock
Exciting, energetic and unpretentious jazz from The Bad Plus – an indefatigable combo we dig more and more as their career rolls on – and this as strong as anything they've done in years. Whether you want to call it jazz rock, jam jazz, or whatever – it's invigorating, dare we say it, straight up fun. The trio of Reid Anderson (bass), Ethan Iverson (piano) and Dave King (drums) can stroll from complex, obtuse improvised parts to head nodding catchiness at the drop of a dime – and do! We're digging it, and hope you will, too. Includes "The Radio Tower Has A Beating Heart", "You Are", "Never Stop", "Snowball", "Bill Hickman At Home", "Super America" and more. CD

A killer set from Count Basie – recorded during the height of his years at Roulette! The back cover of the record proclaims that "Basie Is Back Home" – clearly a bit by Birdland to lay claim to being the Count's home address, which is a bit of a challenge to his KC roots! Whatever the back story, though, the set's a nice one – swinging hard in that completely tight 60s mode, with a great lineup that includes Frank Foster and Budd Johnson on tenor, Thad Jones on trumpet, Bennie Powell on trombone, and Freddie Green on guitar – a really great group who definitely make the record a cooker! Tracks include "Good Time Blues", "Segue In C", "Little Pony", "Discommotion", and "Whirly Bird", which has a vocal by Jon Hendricks! LP, Vinyl record album

Peter Brotzmann/Han BenninkSchwarzwaldfahrt (CD/book) ... CD
FMP/Trost (Austria), 1977. New Copy ... $41.99 46.99
An amazing document of one of Peter Brotzmann's greatest albums from the time – a set that includes the album on CD, plus a book of photos taken during its creation! The record features spare duets between him and percussionist Han Bennink – recorded in the Black Forest, in a very nature-oriented setting that often has Bennink playing on rocks, sticks, and whatever else he could find – even some water, which sounds especially amazing! Han turns in some of his most inventive percussion ever – and proof that he's easily one of the most creative musicians on the European scene! There's a real focus on sound and feeling on the album – an organic sensibility that's quite different from other Brotzmann sessions, and which often comes across with a surprisingly gentle feel – and the album's a perfect example of the FMP formula at its best, when applied with the right sense of freedom. The whole thing comes in a softcover book with a fantastic presentation – loads of photos that were taken on the way to the forest where the set was recorded, then during the recording of the material too – really beautiful images that live up to the aesthetic of the cover art. The book also features an introductory essay – and the whole thing is 120 pages, with the CD inside the cover – black and white images throughout. CD

✨✧ Roy Eldridge/Ella FitzgeraldRoy Eldridge Quartet/Ella Fitzgerald Quintet – In Concert 1959 ... CD
Stateside (Denmark), 1959. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A previously-unknown recording of two giant Verve Records stars of the 50s – captured here in a European performance, but not as part of the regular Jazz At The Philharmonic touring package! The set begins with two long tracks that are a superb showcase for the trumpet of Roy Eldridge – as Roy blows with a crisp muted style that has plenty of room to open up – with backing from the quartet of Herb Ellis on guitar, Lou Levy on piano, Wilfred Middlebrooks on bass, and Gus Johnson on drums – players who continue to then back up Ella Fitzgerald for the remaining nine tracks on the album! There's a nicely intimate, less iconic presentation of Fitzgerald here – still as great as her famous Verve dates, but maybe slightly more relaxed too. Eldridge blows "Soft Winds" and "Roy's Riff" – and Ella's tracks include "Whatever Lola Wants", "All I Need Is You", "I Loves You Porgy", "Lady Be Good", "How High The Moon", and a nice take on "Alright Okay You Win". Bethlehem, 1955. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Don Elliott puts down his mellophone and starts to sing – and the results are a surprisingly strong set that's one of his standouts of the 50s! Don's got a limited range, but more than makes up for it with his sense of personality – a mode that's a bit like Jackie Paris or Matt Dennis at the time, with qualities that are quite far from mainstream male pop vocals of the period! Backing is by a core cool combo that includes Billy Byers on trombone and Hal McKusick on alto and flute – and the tunes have a sweet modern quality that's mighty fresh. Titles include "Ooh Baby It Scares Me", "I Hadn't Anyone Til You", "Every Time", "Let's Fall In Love", "Whatever Happened To You", and "Looking For A Boy". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Fat Babies18th & Racine ... CD
Delmark, 2013. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest combos working in Chicago these days – a trad jazz group with a really wonderful sound – one of the few modern groups who can really illustrate the improvisational excitement of jazz back in the Windy City scene of the 20s and 30s! These guys have a freshness that you'd never find with other trad combos – maybe an energy that's generated by their youth, or the fact that in the 21st Century we're now so removed from the cliches of the trad revival, folks can start over again and really get things right. Whatever the case, their sound is great – an electrifying revival of modes we never thought we'd like this much from contemporary players. The lineup includes string bass, cornet, clarinet, alto sax, trombone, piano, drums, and banjo – and titles include "The Stampede", "18th & Racine", "I Can't Dance", "Stardust", "Oh Baby", "The Chant", and "Blueberry Rhyme". Savoy, 1959. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A seminal session from Curtis Fuller – one of a handful he cut for Savoy, recorded during that late 50s/early 60s period when he seemed poised to become one of the biggest trombonists in jazz! (Whatever happened? How did he cut so many records as a leader so fast, then slide back into being a sideman for most of the rest of his career?) The set's cut in that laidback blowing session mode of the Savoy hardbop years – with tremendous work from Benny Golson on tenor, plus Tommy Flanagan on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Al Harewood on drums – all working through easily-handled tunes that include "Minor Vamp", "Love Your Spell Is Everywhere", "Five Spot After Dark", and "Twelve Inch". ✨✧ Hal GalperWild Bird ... LP
Mainstream, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever recorded by pianist Hal Galper – and that's saying a lot, given his huge legacy of records! This set has Hal working in a strongly electric mode – using an electric piano with the same sort of spacious qualities he could bring to acoustic – never jamming as hard as some of his more dynamic 70s contemporaries, but in a really great way that creates a special energy on the record – not just for Galper, but also for the groupmates, who really seem to bring out their best. The lineup includes Randy Brecker on trumpet and Michael Brecker on tenor and soprano sax – both playing in the darker edges of their sound – and the record also features guitar, bass, and drums. Some moments are funky, but the real stand out tracks have an even more special electric vibe – and titles include "This Moment", "Whatever", "Wild Bird", and "Change Up". LP, Vinyl record album

Astrollage (Japan), 2022. New Copy ... $14.99 28.99
A really beautiful follow-up to the previous set of duets from these two west coast musicians – and a record that's maybe even more sublime than the first! We're not sure what it is – maybe it's the passage of a few years that has deepened the sound, or maybe just the warmth that both players have for each other – yet whatever the case, the combination of the saxophones of Sam Gendel and the bass of Sam Wilkes flows out with all these tones and textures that go way past the obvious – definitely in some of the "beyond jazz" modes of the LA scene in recent years, but still with enough solo strengths to please fans of more conventional instrumentation too. There's great sonic touches to many tracks – almost an International Anthem vibe, but not in a remix/cutup way – and titles include "Greetings To Idris More Songs", "Flametop Green", "Welcome Vibe", "Theem Prototype", "SG's Prius", "Streetlevel", and a nice version of "Caroline No". ✨✧ Herbie HancockFuture Shock ... LP
Columbia, 1983. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The future is now! Or at least it seemed to be back in 1983 when Herbie teamed up with Bill Laswell to record this classic album of computer-driven keyboard grooves! Whatever you might think of the music, the record was a genius move for Herbie – who was kind of flopping around in a number of different styles on previous albums, most of which we like, but none of which seemed to earn him the same cred as his albums in the 70s. Well this one not only earned him plenty of cred, but also a lot of cash, and continued assurance to Columbia that their contract with Herbie was well-placed – and it certainly cast Bill Laswell into the spotlight as well, given that his efforts really provided the core of the album. Tracks include "Rockit", "Earth Beat", "Future Shock", "Autodrive", and "Rough". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Andrew HillPax ... CD
Blue Note, 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the last great "lost" sessions from pianist Andrew Hill – material recorded for Blue Note in the mid 60s, and issued only briefly in the 70s – finally to be reissued here properly in its entirety for the first time ever! The record has Hill working at his sharpest and most modern – really setting fire with a group that includes Joe Henderson on tenor sax, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Richard Davis on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums – a perfect "new thing" lineup to carry off the original compositions of Hill in the set. There's a nascent soulfulness lurking underneath the surface of the record, making things not as starkly modern as on other Hill Blue Note sessions from the 60s – and that's a quality that we really appreciate, and which gives the record a bit more complexity and depth than usual. (And who knows, perhaps its that quality that made Blue Note hold back the record in the 60s – because it didn't fit the mold of Hill they were trying for at the time!) Whatever the case, though, the record's a great one – and features 7 original titles that include "Eris", "Pax", "Calliope", "Euterpe", "Roots N Herbs", and "Erato". And just in case you're wondering, the material was previously issued on the record One For One – a 2-fer from 1975! CD

The album only features 4 tracks, but for CTI, Freddie was cutting them so long, that's the only way you could go – as his freewheeling approach to soul jazz really pushed the boundaries of the genre while he was working at the label – and which really pushed Hubbard's sound, too – into territory that nobody would have expected back in the 60s! Titles include the long original version of "Red Clay", plus the classic funk track "First Light", and mellower tunes "In A Mist" and "Here's That Rainy Day". LP, Vinyl record album

Pablo/OJC, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
Milt Jackson sings, in addition to his familiar vibes on this set – an unusual date done during his Pablo Records run of the late 70s – and a surprisingly great little album overall! As you might guess, Jackson's not the greatest singer in jazz – but it's this quality that also makes the record really great – kind of an honest approach to the tunes that reminds us of the sort of singers we used to catch at south side jam sessions here in Chicago – vocalists whose love of a tune was so great, they were willing to get out and take whatever chances they may – showing a care for the lyrics that's almost greater than a more proficient singer. Electric piano backs up Jackson on most of the vocal numbers – creating a cool, soulful glow – and other players on the record include Cedar Walton on keyboards, Dennis Budimir and John Collins on guitar, Billy Higgins on drums, and Ray Brown on bass – who also produced the session. Titles include "Heartstrings", "Don't Worry Bout Me", "Yes Sir That's My Baby", "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face", "Someone I Love", and "Parking Lot Blues". CD

In the postwar years, Pim was one of the bigger new talents on the European scene – famous for his backing work with a number of singers – but this set from later years shows that he hasn't lost an ounce of his talent, and has really developed a way of stretching out, even in a small space – to make the most of whatever tune he takes on! The album has Pim on acoustic piano – working across the keys with a nice light touch that almost shows the influence of the electric generation – and tracks include "Come Fly With Me", "I've Got The World On A String", "I Love You", "Body & Soul", and "Sultry Serenade". Fresh Sound (Spain), 1953. Used ... Out Of Stock
We don't know what they were putting in the water in Boston during the 50's, but whatever it was, it sure made Bostonians play great jazz – especially all the white guys who picked up alto saxophones. Charlie Mariano was one of those guys, and from the start, his playing on the alto had a brilliant tone that lay somewhere between the iciness of Lee Konitz and the more soulful sound of Art Pepper. Mariano was always completely in his own bag, though, and as you'll hear on this early set of recordings with a young Jaki Byard, he was always open to modernist influences, but (like Byard) never let them get in the way of a soulful solo. We're not sure who these tracks were originally recorded for, but there's 16 of them, and they're all studio material with a hard lively sound. 2 rare Sun Ra Saturn albums back to back on one CD! Cosmic Tones is one of the Ra's greatest albums for Saturn – a record that has him playing clavioline and echoey "cosmic side drums" with a great spacey sound that was probably arrived at through some primitive reverb and echo techniques! The overall effect is everything you'd imagined about Sun Ra – a mixture of hardbop, soul jazz, and some spacey musings that are definitely out of this world! Titles include "Moon Dance", "Voice of Space", and "Adventure Equation". Art Forms features material recorded in New York in 1961, and released on Saturn in 1965 – but whatever the date, it's still light years ahead of its time! The percussion instruments are heard to great effect on the track "Solar Drums" – which has an echoey percussive sound that's really wonderful! Titles include "Stoneblock 2", "Blade", "Apple Of Dischord", "Jumping Jack", "N Dance", "Nearly Yours", "Allegro Agitato", and "Exit O". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Cecil TaylorAir Above Mountains ... CD
Enja (Germany), 1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
Freewheeling Cecil Taylor – heard here solo, in his best 70s mode – recorded live in Austria in 1976, playing beautifully on a Bosendorfer Grand piano! Taylor works wonders with the instrument – giving it a pyrotechnic workout during the extended performance on the set – at a level that, whatever you might feel about his approach to jazz, really stands as a demonstration that, above anything else, Taylor has always been one hell of a pianist – able to handle the instrument in a way that's unlike anyone else! The album features one long track – "Air Above Mountains (Buildings Within)" – awash with light, colors, and life – all from the Taylor side of the spectrum! CD

✨✧ Sadao Watanabe & Akira MiyazawaLatin Barock Collection ... CD
King (Japan), 1965. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Is that barock or baroque? Whatever the case, the album's a pretty darn groovy affair – twin flutes from Sadao Watanabe and Akira Miyazawa – two of Japan's best reedmen at the end of the 60s – working here with some sweet arrangements that mix classical roots with mod instrumental modes! The approach is a bit like some of the best groovy European sessions of this type – and the production and instrumentation also carry occasional soundtrack echoes too – especially in the album's use of bossa rhythms, vibes, and wordless vocals at points – which make the whole thing feel like some lost Italian or French session from the time. Titles include "Orchestral Suite No 2", "Flute Sonata No 1", "Musical Offering", "Toccata & Fugue In D Minor", and "Invention In 6 Parts No 9". CD

✨✧ Chris WoodsFrom Here To Eternity (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Black & Blue/Norma (Japan), 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
Chris Woods is one of our favorite reed players from the 70's, and, like a lot of our other favorites (Nathan Davis, Sahib Shihab), he spent a great deal of time in Europe, and never achieved the recognition he would have if he'd been playing here. (Or perhaps we should say that he never received the recognition in the US that he did in Europe.) Whatever the case, though, this is one of the rare few recordings he left behind from that era, and it features Woods on alto and flute, playing with Gerry Wiggins on piano, Major Holley on bass, and Ed Thigpen on drums. The session was recorded by the French Black & Blue label, and includes material that's mostly laidback renditions of standards like "Lush Life", "Alone Again", and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", plus a few originals like "Mule Walk" and "You Can't Win None Of 'Em". CD
(1995 Japanese pressing – includes obi!)
