✨✧ Loos/ArmstrongLoos/Armstrong ... CD
Okka Disk, 1999. Used ... Out Of Stock
That's Loos/Armstrong, not Louis Armstrong – a late 90s Dutch group who improvise freely on both electric and acoustic elements – with a style that makes the record one of the most offbeat albums ever released on the Okka Disk label! In some ways, the combo almost tie together Dutch traditions of free jazz and electronic experimentation – with a lineup that features Gerald Bowhuis on piano, Huib Emmer on guitar, Johan Faber on drums, Patricio Wang on bass and guitar, and Dennis Rudge on voice – plus leader Peter Van Bergen on tenor, bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet, and some mighty cool electronics! At times, the use of voice adds almost a no wave element to the set – and on the set, Rudge reads from Sun Ra's "Endless Realm" , and "Amooooore", a 1916 text from Volt – on titles that include "FTE 1", "FA5 1", "FA 3", and "FL 1". ✨✧ CreationSuper Rock In The Highest Voltage ... LP
EMI (Japan), 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Despite the title of the album, the group's a sharp-edged fusion combo – one that hails from late 70s Japan, and who works here in the best mainstream fusion mode of the time! The tunes are mostly jazz funk with a bit of polish – heavy on guitars from Kazuo Takeda, who also takes off on some pretty nice solos – and also featuring keyboards from Hisao Sakurai and tenor from Mitsuru Kanekuni. The record is never too jamming, nor too smooth – but one number does feature some unfortunate blues vocals from Takeda. Titles include "Spinning Toe Hold No 2", "No Problem", "Wild Cat", "Swamp Boy", and "Fou Fou Gun Gun". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Eddie HarrisHigh Voltage ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mindblowing electric work from the great Eddie Harris – heard here on his famous late 60s combo that also features bass from the great Melvin Jackson! The music's got all the soulful currents of Eddie's earlier work, yet also takes on a trippier vibe too – since Harris plays an electric version of a tenor sax, most likely a Varitone – which gets all cool and echoey at times, with lots of great effects next to the well-played solos! Melvin Jackson's bass is mighty nice too – as low as you can go, and moving things massively at the bottom – alongside drums from Billy Hart and piano from Jodie Christian. The whole thing's wonderful – and titles include an early version of "Listen Here", plus "Funky Doo", "Is There A Place For Us", "The Children's Song", and "Movin' On Out". LP, Vinyl record album
(1841 Broadway label pressing. Cover has surface & edge wear, small split on the bottom seam, & some drip staining on the back.)

Wendell Harrison TribeGet Up Off Your Knees ... CD
Tribe/P-Vine (Japan), 2021. New Copy ... $18.99 24.99
Fantastic new music from Detroit reedman Wendell Harrison – working here with a renewed version of the Tribe Records scene, at a level that makes the album one of his best in many years! Wendell blows tenor and bass clarinet, and his group here is mostly younger, lesser-known players – but who soar with Harrison in a mix of spiritual jazz modes and a few more rhythmic currents – all with the kind of powerful, progressive vibe that made the Tribe Records material of Harrison and his contemporaries so important in the 70s! Other musicians include Vincent Chandler on trombone, Steve Woods on flute, Luis Resto on piano, Walter White on trumpet, and Jacob Schwantz on guitar – although players shift often from track to track – and frequent Harrison partner Pamela Wise also provides a bit of keyboards, and the set features both sung vocals on two tracks from Pathe Jassi, and a recitation from Mbiyu Chui on another. Titles include "Revoltuion", "Siera", "Wandering Thoughts", "Samoulen Khale Yi", "What's Up", and "Saga Of A Carrot". CD

✨✧ Hank MobleyHi Voltage (non-RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
An extremely well-titled set from the legendary Hank Mobley – one of his key Blue Notes of the 60s, and an album that glides along with an undeniable sense of joy, life, and soul! Mobley's really opening up his groove at this point – moving way beyond standard hard bop and soul jazz riffs, into a field of complicated rhythms – and a flurry of sound that features his mighty tenor atop a crack sextet that includes Blue Mitchell and Jackie McLean. John Hicks handles piano on the session – and brings in a beautiful range of colors and tones – and rhythm's handled by the skipping drums of Billy Higgins and the always-solid bass of Bob Cranshaw. Titles include "Two & One", "High Voltage", "No More Goodbyes", "Advance Notion", and "Bossa De Luxe". CD

✨✧ Elis Regina & Toots ThielemansElis & Toots – Aquarela Do Brasil ... LP
Verve/Philips (Germany), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A one of a kind record that still sparkles as brightly today as it did back in the late 60s – an amazing collaboration between Brazilian vocalist Elis Regina and Scandinavian jazzman Toots Thielemans – done in a style that easily makes it one of the best records ever from both artists! Elis is at the height of her jazzy late 60s powers here – working in a soaring, breezy sort of style – but one with a lot more depth and soul than some of her contemporaries. She brings a great deal of feeling to the tunes, but always without doing too much – and this leaves plenty of space for Toots to add his touches – on harmonica, guitar, and even a bit of whistling – which really sits in nicely with the grooves. The production and overall sound is sublime – one of those never matched again sort of studio dates – and titles include great versions of "Canto De Ossanha", "Wave", "Voce", "Wilsamba", "Five For Elis", "Volta", and "O Sonho". SkySky 2 ... LP
Arista, 1980. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99
The big second album from Sky – a record that's twice as long as the first, and which gives the group even more room for instrumental explorations! As before, the guitar sounds here are both acoustic and electric – played by both John Williams, the virtuoso musician with classical roots, and Kevin Peek, who's got more rock experience – and the group also features really strong keyboards from Francis Monkman, plus bass from the great Herbie Flowers, and thundering drums from Tristan Fry! The sound is a balance of fullness and space – much more so than other fusion records of this nature – and while Williams' solos sometimes have older elements in their phrasing, the overall sound is pretty progressive – in the best 70s mainstream way. Titles include "Fifo", "Sahara", "Dance Of The Little Fairies", "Ballet Volta", "Gavotte & Variations", "El Cielo", and "Tristan's Magic Garden". (Rock, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album
(NOTE – Mid 80s German pressing in a Japanese gatefold cover.)

✨✧ Toquinho & Sadao WatanabeMade In Coracao ... CD
Elektra, 1988. Used ... Out Of Stock
A lovely little meeting between bossa guitarist Toquinho and Japanese saxophonist Sadao Watanabe – a set that has Sadao returning to some of the Brazilian styles he first recorded back in the 60s! There's a nicely warm feel to the set, but the sound is still pretty intimate overall – not nearly as produced or smooth as some of Watanabe's other work of the time, and with an up-close element that definitely shows Toquinho's influence. Toquinho sings a fair bit on the set, and Watanabe's solos are a sharp-edged treat – and the record features a fair bit of original compositions for the session. Titles include "Saudade De Elis", "Carinhoso", "Sentimentos Iguais", "Minha Profissao", "Filho Meu", "Made In Coracao", "Inquieto Amor", and "Samba Da Volta". (Brazil, Jazz) CD
