An incredible record from Bobby Hutcherson – easily one of his best of the 80s, and with some great touches that recall his best 70s work! The album title might fool you into thinking that Bobby's working in Charlier Parker territory here – but he's not, and is instead grooving in a mellow and soulful west coast mode – working with a totally great group that includes Ralph Moore on tenor and soprano sax, Buddy Montgomery on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums. The whole album's a magical picture of tone, color, and light – but the especially standout track is "Sierra" – a totally killer number that has these arch angles and edges that rival the best sounds heard on Hutcherson's Montara album! Drummer Takeo Moriyama recorded some great albums in the 70s and 80s – and this live date from the start of the 90s is equally nice, and comes across with a soaring, spiritual vibe that's very different than most mainstream work of the time! The music soars with effortless energy, and Takeo's drums are matched by superb work on bass from Hideaki Mochizuki – then spun out with these searing tenor solos from Toshihiko Inoue, all while the mighty Fumio Itabashi handles piano – all with a sense of soulful majesty that matches any of the key Japanese jazz classics recorded under his own name! The set's a live one, and the tracks are all very long and bold – with titles that include "Watarase", "Exchange", "Hush A Bye", "Sunrise", and "Goodbye". LP, Vinyl record album

Incredibly groovy work from one of the hippest organ talents of the 60s – a true "soul book" of tu nes, most of which are originals penned by Freddie Roach! The sound here is really unique – a bit in the R&B-inspired style of Freddie's work for Blue Note, but also with a leaner, more modal approach – a bit like that showing up in the work of John Patton as he really started to grow – and served up here by players who mostly include Buddy Terry on tenor sax, Vinnie Corrao on guitar, and Jackie Mills on drums. The sound's got a quality that's sometimes tightly stepping – remind us a bit of Trudy Pitts – and at other times, the work shows some of the increasing sophistication that Roach would explore even more strongly in later years. Titles include a beautiful long track called "Spacious", plus "Tenderly", "One Track Mind", "The Bees" and "Avatara". CD

A strong live set from the great Paco DeLucia – one that has his sublime acoustic guitar sounds really ringing out in the large space of a theater – which creates a slightly different vibe than some of his more close-up studio records of the 70s! DeLucia is extremely commanding in this space – and seems to reach out with even more majesty than ever – incredibly deft work on the strings of the guitar, full of fire and feeling – on a set of original numbers that reference tradition, then completely dismantle it as well. Pierre Dorge pays tribute to the late reedman John Tchicai – a frequent musical partner over the years, and a player who's shaped the sound of countless others on both sides of the Atlantic! Tchicai got his start with Archie Shepp on the New York scene of the 60s, but moved over to Denmark by the end of that decade – and ended up having a good deal of interaction with guitarist Pierre Dorge in years to come, including performances on some of the best sessions by the New Jungle Orchestra! This album really recalls those great ones – as Dorge chooses tunes that seem to have an especially spiritual flavor, and evoke Tchicai in ways that most of the group's recent work might not have – using especially strong passages from reed players who include Jakob Mygind on tenor and soprano, Anders Banke on tenor and bass clarinet, and Morten Carlson on tenor and taragot. Titles include "Mozombo", "A Rufous Mot Mot", "Jungle Sketches", "Autobahn Tchicai Zwei", "Lucianus In Congo", and "Tjak Tjaka Tchicai". CD

One of the greatest records ever cut by organist Billy Larkin – a lean, mean batch of soul jazz instrumentals, recorded with the Delegates combo, featuring tenor work by a young Fats Theus! The tracks are short tight jazz dancers – with a mixture of stepping grooves and some more full on rhythmic modes – and titles include "Tarantula", "Soul Sister", "Playboy Theme", "Puget Sound", "Gwon Train", "Ain't That A Groove", "Ain't Gonna Move", and "Goin Out Of My Head"! A really hard-burning live set, and one that's led by two giants of the Japanese jazz scene – drummer Takeo Moriyama and pianist Fumio Tabashi – both of whom work here with an edge that's maybe even bolder than some of their music from back in the day! Part of the album's boldness comes from the work of Tetsuro Kawashima on tenor and Shinpei Ruike on trumpet – both players we don't know at all, but who can really set a fire with their solos at all the right moments – opening up the extended tracks with a heck of a lot of righteous power. The group also has strong basswork from Shinichi Kato, another younger player – and titles include "Watarase", "Sunrise", "Goodbye", "Alligator Dance", and "Ganbane Tohoku No 2". CD

Drummer Ulysses Owens leads a great ensemble here – a largeish group that he makes swing and soar throughout, driving the whole thing with the kind of fire that Kenny Clarke might have done in a similar setting! As with Clarke in his famous big band, Owens knows that the best sound will come from the group if he opens the door to all the many talents in the lineup – not just big names like Michael Dease on trombone, Stefon Harris on vibes, and Alexa Tarantino on alto – but also players like trumpeter Benny Benack, tenorist Diego Rivera, and bassist Yasushi Nakamura – who not only solo, but also bring their own arrangements to the group. There's a wonderful sense of individual spirit and color within the group – a very fresh take on this sort of territory – and titles include "Language Of Flowers", "Harlem Harlem Harlem", "Soul Conversations", "London Towne", "Red Chair", and "Beardom X" – plus a version of "Giant Steps". A great take on the music of Vince Guaraldi – particularly his famous themes for Charlie Brown Christmas, but also featuring a few other tunes as well – all delivered in a style that's nicely different than the originals! Isaiah Thompson handles the piano and overall arranger – and there's a nicely shifting lineup of musicians throughout the set – including John Pizzarelli on guitar, Alexa Tarantino on alto and flute, Julian Lee on tenor, and Anthony Hervy on trumpet – musicians who really bring some great individual solo voices to the songs, and maybe a bit more bite than Guaraldi's original recordings. Tyreek McDole sings on a great version of "Little Birdie", and other titles include "Charlie Brown Theme", "Great Pumpkin Waltz", "Christmas Is Coming", "Christmas Time Is Here", "Thanksgiving Theme", "Linu & Lucy", "Heartburn Waltz", and "What Child Is This". Just the right sort of setting to unlock all the majestic power of David S Ware at his best – that tremendously soulful tone on tenor, and one that rivals Billy Harper when operating at a level of this nature! The performance is a live one, and features Ware in the company of guitarist Joe Morris, drummer Warren Smith, and bassist William Parker – the last of whom provides that trademark pulse that always seems to set Ware on fire – an inspiring sort of rhythm that really pushes his horn to searing, searching new heights! Tracks are all quite long, with a spiritual feel – and Ware also plays a bit of kalimba on the record, which is always a nice touch. Titles include "Nataraj", "Reflection", "Namah", "Crossing Samsara", "Shakti", and "Antidromic". CD

A cosmic leap forward for Passport – a record that's even more keyboard-heavy than some of the group's earlier work, and which stretches out in a spacey sound that's very much in keeping with the cover! The keys here are handled by (yet again) another new player in the group – Kristian Schulze on Fender Rhodes and organ, who seems to play with a tone and a ringing clarity that's a great counterpart to Klaus Doldinger's rich tones on tenor and soprano sax – brighter than before somehow, and with a focused groove that only further intensifies the sound the group explored on their first few records. Titles include "Eternal Spiral", "Rockport", "Looking Thru", "Tarantula", "Ready For Takeoff", and "Things To Come". CD

A wonderful sound library set from Piero Umiliani, and one that's overflowing with contributions from some mighty hip jazz musicians on the Italian scene of the 70s – including Enrico Pieranunzi on both electric and acoustic piano, Oscar Valdambrini on trumpet, Dino Piana on trombone, and Bruno Tommaso on bass – all working with very cool organ and moog from Piero himself! There's flute on many tracks – played by both S Genovese and N Rapicavoli, both players we don't know at all – and the instrument is often used in these cool, compressed ways that are mighty nice – and which make a stunning sonic counterpart to the other instrumentation, especially when Umiliani turns up some of the odd effects in the production! A really great meeting of talents – legendary reedman Sadao Watanabe, who'd already done plenty to bring the bossa nova to Japan by the time of this record – and a host of Brazilian musicians who further help him expand his groove! The combo is listed as Sadao's Brazilian 8 – and includes Jose Ferreira Godinho Filho on alto, Carlos Alberto Alcantara on tenor, Waldir De Barrios on trumpet, and Aparecido De Barros on trumpet – a group who are way more than just the added guitar and percussion that American musicians might use on such a set – although there's plenty of that here too! Watanabe's out front on alto and flute and he runs through a groovy set of bossa cuts that includes "Muito A Vontade", "Tristeza", "Barquinho Diferente", "Eu E A Brisa", "Bim Bom", and "E Nada Mais". Caribbean styles hit the American scene – then get transformed into something completely different in this huge collection of recordings that span styles that include jazz, Latin, R&B, soul, and blues! In some cases, the Caribbean element comes through in the song structure – which might be lifted directly, then reworked for an American audience. But at other times, the influence is more in the rhythms or instrumentation – used as inspiration to then create something new – a bit in the way that American soul would provide the inspiration for reggae in the 60s. A really heady collection of cuts – one that starts with jazz, and moves into a whole host of other righteous styles too – all to sum up a 70s mode that's as much about empowerment as it is peace! Think of the cuts here as being in the much farther reaches past the styles initiated by Impulse Records and the Coltrane generation – to a point where the artists here aren't just copying modal and spiritual jazz styles, but infusing them with all sorts of new inflections of their own – at a level that makes the whole collection a really wonderful discovery!
