A great little album that's as compelling as its title! Beautiful work from Adegoke Steve Colson – a warmly grooving set cut with vocalist Iqua Colson – possibly one of Steve's straightest records ever, but one of his most soulful, too! Iqua's got a fluid vocal approach that's mighty nice – and the Colson combo swings in a mix of modal moments and soul jazz roots – with work from TK Blue on soprano and alto sax, Andy McCloud on bass, and Reggie Nicholson on drums. Most titles are originals, with a really fresh feel – the kind of hopeful, optimistic spirit of jazz vocals, if you still no where to look – and titles include "Hope For Love", "At The Church Steps", "Picante", "Regina's Lament", "South Of The Border Serenade", and "After Revelation's Ease". Post-Atlantic work from Robin Kenyatta – but an album that follows in a very similar mode! This date was done for the Wolf subsidiary of TK Records, but it's got a very hip New York groove – one that's almost even more righteous than some of Robin's earlier work, with some excellent arrangements from Arthur Jenkins – who's managed to fill the set with a great sense of soul! Kenyatta's alto and soprano sax are set up with keyboards from Jenkins and Richard Tee, plus bass, guitar, percussion, and some great backing vocals at points – used sparingly, but in ways that almost remind us of Oneness Of Juju at some of their smoother moments. Kenyatta's reeds have a Plunky-like feel too – more inside than the Juju work of the mid 70s, but pointing towards Plunky's smoother sounds to come. Given that the vocal group features Gwen Guthrie, Vivian Cherry, and Patti Austin, you can bet they sound pretty sweet – and titles on the set include "Love Me", "Oh Oh Oh", "You", "Bluebird", and "Of Life & Love". Brilliant early work from Charlie Mariano – key proof of his genius, and one of the main albums we'd recommend by him! The album has Charlie coming of his years in the Boston scene – boppish at some level, but blowing with a raspy soulfulness that really opens up his horn into new territory – not Charlie Parker, not Lee Konitz, but a whole new space and sound of expression for the alto sax! There's a deftness here that's undeniable – but the album also has a sense of soul and personality that goes way deeper than simply sharp soloing – a quality that easily puts Charlie up there next to Lou Donaldson and Sonny Stitt in the 50s! Tremendous work from saxophonist Pepper Adams – quite possibly one of his most hard-blowing sets on record! The album's a live date, recorded at the legendary Five Spot – and the group here is a swinging one with plenty of soul jazz touches – a combo that includes a young Bobby Timmons on piano, plus Donald Byrd on trumpet, Doug Watkins on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – all playing together at the height of their youthful powers! But even amidst all those heavyweights, Pepper Adams is clearly the star of the set – playing with a tone that's unbelievable – almost more tenor-like than a baritone sax, and filled with feeling throughout, even on the mellower moments. Donald Byrd sits out on one track, leaving Adams to dominate the ballad "You're My Thrill" – but he returns to the fold in tight formation on versions of "Hastings Street Bounce", "Yourna", "Tis", and "The Long Two/Four". A real lost treasure from Pacific Jazz – a rare late 50s west coast session from Pepper Adams, featuring the amazing baritonist in a group with Lee Katzman on trumpet, Jimmy Rowles on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums! The sound is incredible – on a par with that rare few of Adams' other magnificent albums as a leader – modern, yet soulful, and with a fluid feel that makes it hard to believe that Pepper's working with a baritone sax. The Bad Plus have cut down their groove a bit more on this set – going for a style that's even more introspective than before, but which also shows them expanding their horizons nicely! The group's lineup of bass, piano, and drums is played with a dynamism that recalls some of the acoustic work of the Medeski Martin & Wood trio – but there's also a lyrical sense of freedom here that recalls some of the more exploratory work coming out of French and Japanese trio scenes in the 70s. There's almost a Steve Kuhn-esque sense of color and shading to some of the tunes – one that mixes equal parts sadness and joy in a beautiful way, and which leaps out with surprising energy from time to time.
