✨✧ Dave BrubeckDave Brubeck At Storyville 1954 ... LP
Columbia, 1954. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Great live work from the Dave Brubeck Quartet – a batch of recordings from Boston's legendary Storyville night club! The lineup features Dave on keys and the mighty Paul Desmond on alto sax – already stepping out here with a clear, crisp tone that's simply beautiful – a style that's a surprisingly nice match for the Boston scene of the 50s, which was budding similar altoists like Charlie Mariano and Boots Mussulli – recorded here with bass by Bob Bates, and drums by Joe Dodge. Tracks are relatively long, and titles include "Back Bay Blues", "When You're Smiling", "Here Lies Love", and "Gone With The Wind". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Stan GetzStan Getz At Storyville Volumes 1 & 2 ... CD
Roulette/EMI (UK), 1951. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great CD that combines volumes 1 and 2 of Stan's early live recordings at Storyville – excellent small group sessions done with a group that includes Jimmy Raney on guitar, Al Haig on piano, Teddy Kotick on bass, and Tiny Kahn on drums. The mix of guitar and tenor is great together – a sound that became one of Stan's calling cards in the early 50s – and even the live setting can't stifle the strength of his unique tone. The CD features a total of 13 cuts in all – and titles include "Budo", "Jumpin With Symphony Sid", "Yesterdays", "Thou Swell", "Mosquito Knees", and "Parker 51". CD

Storyville, 1964/1981/1984/1989. Used 3CD & DVD ... Out Of Stock
3CDs, and one DVD – a heck of a lot of music in one groovy little box set! The 3CDs each feature a different overseas performance by American tenor legend Johnny Griffin – working in very familiar territory of Copenhagen, in long, open-ended recordings that really show his inventive strengths on the tenor sax! CD 1 features a 1964 performance with Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – on titles that include "Doctor's Blues", "Night In Tunisia", "Wee Dot", and "Body & Soul". CD 2 features a 1984 performance with Eddie Lockjaw Davis joining Griff in the frontline on additional tenor – with rhythm by Harry Pickens on piano, Curtis Lundy on bass, and Kenny Washington on drums – on titles that include "Funky Fluke", "Hey Lock", "Lester Leaps In", "Blues Up & Down", and "Oh Gee". CD 3 features a 1989 date, with Drew on piano again – on titles that include "Just Friends", "Isfahan", "Slukefter Blues", and "Hush A Bye". The set also features a DVD – with 3 tracks from a Village Vanguard performance by Griffin in 1981, with Ronnie Matthews on piano – on titles that include "A Monk's Dream", "56 & Closing", and "Opening/Blues For Gonzi". DVD also features 2 more 1985 tracks by Eddie Lockjaw Davis (without Griffin) – "S'Wonderful" and "Shiny Stockings" – both recorded in Copehagen. CD

✨✧ Jackie & RoyJackie & Roy (Storyville) ... LP
Storyville, 1955. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the first albums ever from the team of Jackie Caine and Roy Kral – and one of the best, too! The album's got a relaxed, open-ended approach to jazz vocals that already carries all the hallmarks of the Jackie & Roy style – wordless scatting on some tunes, playful lyrical interplay on others, and a focus on Jackie's ballad talents on some of the gentler numbers – all wrapped up in small combo backing that's sensitive, creative, and modern – yet never in a way that overwhelms the vocals. It's hard to match the poise, class, and cleverness of this one – and the album easily set a new standard for vocal jazz in the 50s! Titles include a few great early tunes by Tommy Wolf – the songwriter who would become so important for the pair – and backing is by Roy on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums. Titles include "Let's Take A Walk Around The Block", "You Smell So Good", "Listen Little Girl", "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most", "Bill's Bit", "Dahuud", "I Wish I Were In Love Again", and "Lover". ✨✧ Lee KonitzLee Konitz At Storyville ... CD
Black Lion (Germany), 1954. Used ... Out Of Stock
Tight early work from Lee Konitz – recorded on location at the very hospitable Storyville nightclub in Boston – a sweet setting for his angular tones on the alto! The style here is great – cutting lines that are incredibly precise, yet crafted with enough soul to keep them from just being exercises in sound – delivered with a bit more warmth than some of Lee's other recordings of the time. The group's a quartet with Ronnie Ball on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Al Levitt on drums – and titles include "Sound Lee", "Subconscious Lee", "Hi Beck", and "These Foolish Things". Great reissue of the original 10" LP! CD

Gerry MulliganGerry Mulligan Quartet – At Storyville (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Pacific Jazz, 1956. Used ... $2.99
Gerry Mulligan brings the piano back in nicely here – but in a way that still hangs onto all the best modern tones of his earlier Pacific Jazz sessions! The date's a live one – done at Storyville in Boston – but the sound is wonderfully intimate, with Gerry on baritone sax and piano, Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone, Bill Crow on bass, and Dave Bailey on drums. The Crow/Bailey rhythm section is superb – nicely swinging throughout – and Gerry's work on piano has that airy, moody quality that would show up even more strongly in the 60s. Titles include "Bweebida Bwobbida", "Open Country", "Rustic Hop", "Bike Up The Strand", and "Storyville Story". CD

Rare work by Charlie Parker, recorded at Storyville Nightclub in Boston in 1953 – originally broadcast on radio station WHDH, and featuring Bird in a more open, relaxed style than his studio sessions. The recording quality is a bit dated, but the quality of the playing isn't – with extremely fresh solo work by Parker, and great supporting work by players that include Herb Pomeroy, Red Garland, Roy Haynes, Kenny Clarke, and Sir Charles Thompson. Titles include "Cool Blues", "Dancing On The Ceiling", "Groovin High", "Out Of Nowhere", "Moose The Mooche", and "I'll Walk Alone". CD

Charlie ParkerCharlie Parker In Sweden 1950 (Storyville) ... LP
Storyville (Sweden), 1950. Sealed ... $19.99
Given the coolness of the Swedish jazz scene in the postwar years, we can imagine that the arrival of Charlie Parker on the scene must have set things on fire quite a bit! The album's a great example of the Bird magic even in the most unusual of circumstances – as the settings are less than key, the recording quality a bit muted, and the players all fine, but sometimes not as well matched as they might be – yet none of that matters to Charlie, because he soars out here with the kind of hard-burning solo work that's all-Parker, all the way – pure jazz magic that's still strongly inspiring, even after all these years. The set features live recordings done at Folkets Park and an unknown restaurant, with players that include Rolf Ericson on trumpet, Gosta Theselius on piano, and Rowland Greenberg on trumpet – and titles include "Body & Soul", "Strike Up The Band", "Star Eyes", "Cool Blues", "Fine & Dandy", and "How High The Moon". Storyville (Denmark), 1996. Used ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful work from pianist Geri Allen – a set that features the musician both with her trio, and with a larger nonet that was put together as part of her winning the 1996 Jazzpar prize – as well as a set that features some great late work from trumpeter Johnny Coles! The first half of the record features the trio – a wonderfully warm group that includes Palle Danielsson on bass and Lenny White on drums – really stretching out on the titles "Feed The Fire" and "A Beautiful Friendship". Then, Johnny Coles joins the trio – and gets a great solo space on a version of "Old Folks" – before the larger group comes in, still with Coles up front in the lead on flugelhorn. Those large group titles include "Smooth Attitudes", "Some Aspects Of Water", and "Skin". CD

A great set of trad jazz grooves from the Boston scene of the 50s – recorded with an easygoing groove that's totally great, and put together by George Wein in the same spirit as some of his better-known live events of the time! Players include Ruby Braff on trumpet, Vic Dickenson and Dick Lefave on trombones, Al Drootin on clarinet, Sam Margolis on tenor, Buzzy Drootin on drums, and Wein himself on piano – and the tunes are open-ended swing-based numbers, with titles that include "High Society", "You Took Advantage Of Me", "Swinging The Blues", "At The Jazz Band Ball", and "After You've Gone". Storyville, Mid 50s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful small combo set from this unusual team – put together in ways that are somewhere between the Bob Brookmeyer/Stan Getz pairings of the early 50s, and some of Zoot Sims' work for the Dawn label! Zoot's horn is maybe a bit sharper, and bolder than on his Dawn sides, though – that quality that really made him a favorite with hip listeners of the 50s, and which maybe even beats some of the Stan Getz work of the period – matched by Brookmeyer's impeccable work on valve trombone, which is more straightforward and swinging here than usual! The group also features Hank Jones on piano, Bill Crow on bass, and Jo Jones on drums – and titles include "The King", "Whoo-eeee", "Morning Fun", "Box Cars", and "Snake Eyes". ✨✧ Serge ChaloffFable Of Mable (10 inch LP) ... LP
Storyville, 1954. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Very hip work from the Boston modern scene of the mid 50s! The album's one of Serge Chaloff's few as a leader – and is much harder to find than his more widely-issued work for Capitol – an obscure date for the Storyville label, and one that originally only circulated as a 10" LP! The set's also unusual in that it features Serge at the head of a nonet – with strong players that include Charlie Mariano on alto, Herb Pomeroy on trumpet, and Dick Twardzik on piano – all working wonderfully with Chaloff in a groove that's sharply modern, but also plenty darn swinging! There's a strong dose of Boston soul in the mix here, thanks to contributions from the horn players – and the album's got a freshness that's a nice contrast to Serge's more familiar work at Capitol. Titles include originals like "Sherry", "Slam", "A Salute To Tiny", and "Ennie Meenie Minor Mode" – written by group members Mariano and Twardzik! LP, Vinyl record album

Kenny Drew caught live in the UK in the early 90s – playing with a wonderfully fluid tone, and a bit more sensitivity than in earlier years! The tracks are all quite long, with very drawn-out solos – similar to Drew's best live dates of the 70s – and the trio here features frequent partner Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and the great Alvin Queen on drums. Many tunes have Kenny really dominating with long-flowing piano lines – and titles include "All Blues", "Hush A Bye", "In Your Own Sweet Way", "Bluesology", and "It Could Happen To You". CD

✨✧ Kenny DrewSolo/Duo – Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen/Bo Stief ... CD
Storyville (Denmark), 1966/1978/1983. Used ... Out Of Stock
Kenny Drew's the star of the set on piano – playing solo here on a session from 1978, with a young bassist Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen in 1966, and an early 80s set of duets with bassist Bo Steif on the remainder of the tracks! The album does a nice job of blocking things out – so that the earliest tracks begin the record – but with the kind of open, sensitive modes we're normally used to hearing from the Storyville label in their later years – clearly marking these guys as pioneers in giving a player like Drew the kind of space to express himself in ways that didn't always happen back home in the US. Titles include "Ode To Mariann", "Blues For Nils", "Whisper Not", "Bluesology", "Ack Varmeland Du Skona", "Everything I Love", "Yesterdays", and "A Simple Need". CD

Storyville/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Rare live work from Tubby Hayes – recorded for Swedish Radio in one of the last years of his life, and a really rock-solid set! Given the professional recording of the performance, the set's quite different than some of the more dodgy Hayes live dates – and given Tubby's disappearance from the studio during these later years, the record may well stand as one of the few good documents of his talents at the time! Backing is by a hip trio that features Staffan Abeleen on piano, Niels Henning Ordsted Pedersen on bass, and Alex Riel on drums – and all tracks are quite long, with beautifully-crafted solos that spin out nicely – all in ways that are a bit looser and more free than some of Tubby's 60s work. Titles include "C Minor Bird", "Off The Wagon", "Vierd Blues", "I Thought About You", and "Without A Song". CD

Great drums from the legendary Roy Haynes – a player who was really coming into his own again at the time of this mid 90s set! The recording's a live one, done for Danish Broadcasting with a good sense of clarity – and the group is mostly European, with Tomas Franck on tenor, Thomas Clausen on piano, and Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass. Haynes' touch on the kit is quite heavy at some points, but light and sensitive at others– and the set's got a well-rounded groove that's great proof of Roy's vision as a leader during this time, especially in the way he uses Franck's strong tenor lines. Storyville, Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Sublime work from the duo of Jackie & Roy – a guy/gal vocal team, but one with a sound that's unlike anyone else we can think of! Both Jackie Cain and Roy Kral sing – and Roy also plays a mean piano, and writes a fair bit of the tunes too – really lively numbers that show off the bop-styled techniques they developed while working with Charlie Ventura – but with hipper, groovier lyrics – of the sort that are a key precursor to folks like Bob Dorough or Dave Frishberg! Instrumentation on the set is great, too – a small combo with guitar from either Joe Rumero or Barry Galbraith – served up in a really great mix of tunes that includes "Season In The Sun", "Slowly", "Cheerful Little Earful", "Why Not Admit It", "You Are The One", and "Hook Line And Snare". Illinois Jacquet was one of those players who never stopped going as the decades moved on – a tenorist who started in the bigger jumping bands of the swing generation, but one who was able to grow and shift over the years, and continue to hone his craft! This late date from Switzerland shows Jacquet in fine fine form – blowing strongly in a quartet with Hank Jones on piano, George Duvivier on bass, and JC Heard on drums – all players who have an effortless swing that works well with Illinois' solo skills. Tracks are short, and mighty tight – and titles include "I Wanna Blow Now", "Jack The Bear", "The King", "Cute", "The Very Thought Of You", "In A Sentimental Mood", "George's Blues", and "I Can't Get Started". Not one for the library in a "please be quiet" sort of way – and instead, a nicely strong-toned set of solo work from the great Duke Jordan – still very much at the top of his talent here in the early 90s! There's a resonance to the piano that's really wonderful – maybe a bit more echo than you'd hear on some of Duke's trio recordings – which both has the pianist folding back on himself, and emphasizing the strength of his choices on the keys – almost always inherently rhythmic, even on the ballads. The set has a good number of Jordan compositions – including "No Problem", "Flight To Jordan", "Night Walk", "Two Loves", "Parisian Hop", and "Jor Du" – alongside versions of "Lush Life", "Three Little Words", "Yesterdays", and "The Way You Look Tonight". One of a number of great small group sessions done by singer Teddi King for the Storyville label – nicely relaxed, with backing from a septet that features Billy Taylor on piano, Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, Nick Travis on trumpet, and Gene Quill on alto! The Storyville approach really brings out the best in Teddi's vocals – as the easy-going nature of the record has King sounding a bit more grown-up and adult than before – singing lines in a slightly sultry style, yet still with some of the bird-like notes heard on other albums. Taylor's piano adds a nice grounding to the record – and titles include "Old Folks", "Why Do You Suppose", "I'm In The Market For You", "You Hit The Spot", "Something To Live For", and "Like A Ship Without A Sail". A rock-solid swinger from tenorist Warne Marsh – a set that's maybe got a bit more of a groove than some of his other records of late vintage – thanks to work from the rhythm section of Kenny Drew on piano, Bo Stief on bass, and Aage Tanggaard on drums! Steif's especially nice – able to set things up with a soulful pulse that makes a great match for the crisp, clean tenor lines of Marsh – still blowing here with all the modern qualities we've always loved, but also swinging a lot more too. Titles include "Sippin At Bells", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Star Eyes", "Ornithology", "Body & Soul", "Little Willie Leaps", and "Every Time We Say Goodbye" – the last of which is just a duet between Marsh and Drew. Mid 70s magic from the team of Warne Marsh and Lee Konitz – playing together here with an even sharper edge than their recordings of two decades before! The recordings are all live – done at the Club Montmartre in December of 1975 – but they've got a clarity that's almost studio-worthy, which really captures the tone of the players. Marsh is especially great – working with that stretched-out sense of freedom he was hitting in the 70s – and Konitz is pretty swinging himself, with a bit less of the more modern tones of that decade. Rhythm is from a trio that features Ole Kock Hansen on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Alex Riel on drums – and titles include "Background Music", "Kary's Trance", "Lennie-Bird", "Blues By Lester", "April", and "You Stepped Out Of A Dream". Rhythm is from a trio that features Dave Cliff on guitar, Peter Ind on bass, and Alan Levitt on drums. Titles include "Two Not One", "Two Part Invention No 13", "Sound Lee", "Foolin Myself", and "Kary's Trance". CD

✨✧ Howard McGhee & Teddy EdwardsWise In Time ... CD
Storyville (Denmark), 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great late life work from these two important figures on the LA jazz scene of the postwar years – trumpeter Howard McGhee and tenorist Teddy Edwards – both sounding wonderful here in a very relaxed, open setting! The record's got an approach that's especially marked by the deeper, soulful tone that Edwards adopted from the 60s onward – that great ear for a ballad, which McGhee follows strongly in his performance, although with a tone that's maybe a bit more offbeat. The rest of the group features Art Hillery on piano, Leroy Vinegar on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – and titles include a great version of "I Want To Talk About You", plus "Crescent", "Time Waits", "Ruby My Dear", and "If You Could See Me Now". Two giants from the LA bop scene of years past – still sounding wonderful here in the later years of their career! We're not sure we'd rapidly embrace the "young" in the title – but only because there's a maturity of playing here that really makes the record great – a sense of pacing and individuality that makes the trumpet of Howard McGhee and tenor of Teddy Edwards so strong – as they get respectful accompaniment from Art Hillery on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – all players who seem to step into the McGhee/Edwards mode, rather than shape things on their own. Titles include "Reflections", "Relaxin At Camarillo", "Yardbird Suite", "On A Misty Night", and "Blues In The Closet". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Thelonious MonkMonk In Copenhagen ... CD
Storyville, 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rare non-Columbia Records 60s session by the Thelonious Monk Quartet – that magical group that featured the modern piano giant in the lead, with tremendous tenor from Charlie Rouse, as well as bass from John Ore and drums from Frankie Dunlop! Consider the outfit to be the modern jazz variant on the Dave Brubeck Quartet – like that one, a rock-solid unit of players who seem to share equal roles in the magic of the music, with a long legacy of years together – but also a group that's a lot more freewheeling in their sense of experimentation! Rouse is a treasure, as always – and the set was done for Danish radio in 1961, and is very well-recorded. Titles include "Epistrophy", "Jackie-ing", "Crepuscule With Nellie", "Round Midnight", "Off Minor", and "Ba Lue Bolivar Ba Lues Are". CD

✨✧ Charlie RouseMoment's Notice ... CD
Storyville (Denmark), 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
A killer later date from tenor genius Charlie Rouse – one that's quite different than his famous 60s work with Thelonious Monk, but equally wonderful in its own sort of way! The tracks are open, relaxed, and nicely swinging – with Rouse at the head of a quartet that features Hugh Lawson on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Ben Riley on drums – a nicely soulful trio, with solos from Lawson that ever every much a draw as the work by Rouse! But Charlie's the real charmer here – blowing his tenor with this raspy depth that almost has us wondering if he's using a baritone at times – serving up changes that sometimes reflect the modernism of his youth, but in a nicely subtle way. Titles include "Royal Love", "A Child Is Born", "The Clucker", "Let Me", and "Joobobie". CD

Storyville, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
Zoot Sims blows it nicely on this open-ended live set recorded in Copenhagen – a batch of tracks with the same sort of long, free space for solos as other dates done on that scene by American tenor stars! No surprise, Kenny Drew's backing Zoot up with some tremendous rhythm accompaniment – working here with a trio that includes Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums – just about the best backing a player like Sims could have hoped for on the date! All the tracks here move well past the 5 minute mark – with most approaching 10 – and Zoot's ability to solo strongly in an extended fashion is very firmly in place. Titles include "Groovin High", "Too Close For Comfort", "Blue Hodge", "Morning Fun", "All The Things You Are", "It's All Right With Me", and "In The Middle Of A Kiss". CD

✨✧ John StubblefieldPrelude ... LP
Storyville (Denmark), 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Hardly a prelude – as the album's a fully-formed, fully-stated set right from the start – easily one of the best moments ever for reedman John Stubblefield – and an overlooked spiritual classic from the 70s! There's a vibe here that rivals the Strata East scene at their best – no surprise, given that in addition to Stubblefield on tenor and soprano sax, the record also features Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet, Onaje Allen Gumbs on keyboards, Cecil McBee on bass, Joe Chambers on drums, and Mtume on percussion! The approach is quite different than the usual Storyville record of the 70s – with long-spun tracks all composed by members of the group – wonderful tunes that really give John a great chance to show the full range of his talents. Titles include "Song For One", "Minor Impulse", "Twelve For KD", and "What's Gonna Be Is Gonna Be". LP, Vinyl record album

Storyville (Denmark), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A posthumous release of live material recorded in Sweden, during a time when tenor genius Ben Webster was doing some of his best work overseas! The tracks here feature Ben in a few different settings – with piano from Teddy Wilson or Lasse Sjosten, bass from Red Mitchell or Sture Nordin, and drums from Ed Thigpen and Frederik Noren. But maybe best of all is the trumpet work on most tracks – played by either Arne Ryskog or Rolf Ericson, both players whose presence really brings a lot – and makes the record a bit different than some of those other "older American soloists with a European rhythm section" dates of the time. Titles include "Indiana", "C Jam Blues", "The Theme", "Satin Doll", "I Got Rhythm", and "Don't Get Around Much Anymore". CD

Storyville/Muzak (Japan), 1954. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful little concept for a beautiful little album – a "duologue" in which Lee Wiley sings one track, then Ellis Larkins plays the next, and so on – making for a split LP, but one with a lot of variety along the way! Wiley sings on about two thirds of the tracks on the set – working with a small combo that features Jimmy Jones on piano, Ruby Braff on trumpet, Jo Jones on drums, and Bill Pemberton on bass – all of whom provide gentle accompaniment to Lee's traditionally styled vocals. Ellis Larkins plays piano on the rest of the tracks – solo, with that wonderful late nite style of his – an approach that's more complicated than cocktail piano, but a bit more laidback than straighter jazz. Wiley numbers include "My Heart Stood Still", "Give It Back To The Indians", "My Romance", "You Took Advantage Of Me", and "My Funny Valentine". Larkins numbers include "Perfume & Rain", "By Myself", "Looking At You", and "Then I'll Be Tired Of You". (Vocalists, Jazz) CD

Phil WoodsBird With Strings & More ... CD
Storyville (Denmark), 2005. New Copy 2 CDs ... $17.99 18.99
A great little record, and one that definitely hangs strongly on the "and more" promised in the title – as alto sax genius Phil Woods moves very far from the familiar "Charlie Parker With Strings" format you might expect – almost as a statement that shows how much both the setting and Woods have evolved over the decade! There's definitely strings on the set – a full backing that's really seems to inspire Woods towards some of his best work of the period – as does the core rhythm contributions from Ben Arnov on piano, Reggie Johnson on bass, and Douglas Sides on drums – all players who seem to be higher in the mix than the strings, which really emphasizes their presence. The tracks include some long takes on classic Bird/strings songbook material, plus some great surprises – all in nicely different versions. Titles include "April In Paris", "All The Things You Are", "I'll Remember April", "Easy To Love", "The Midnight Sun Will Never Set", "Repetition", "The Best Thing For You Is Me/How Deep Is The Ocean", "Solitude", "Willow Weep For Me", and "I Get Along Without You Very Well". ✨✧ Serge ChaloffFable Of Mabel (Black Lion) ... CD
Black Lion, 1954. Used ...
Includes 5 alternate takes. CD
