A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! A beautiful dreamy album that's quite different from the classic Getz/Gilberto collaboration – but which also shares much of that set's lyrical beauty! This album was recorded live, in 1964, when Stan Getz was playing with his quartet that included Gary Burton on vibes – an incredible lineup that made for some wonderfully moody sounds! The vibes/tenor approach was a high point in Getz's career – especially as the young Burton could create these beautiful washes of sound that were a perfect counterpoint to Getz's breathy playing. And although Astrud Gilberto is thrown into the mix here to give the album a bit of bossa appeal – vocals on 6 titles that include "Corovado", "Eu E Voce", "It Might As Well Be Spring", "One Note Samba", "Only Trust Your Heart", and "The Telephone Song" – there's also 4 more tracks that are all instrumental, and which show the Getz/Burton union in all of its glory! These tracks include "6 Nix Pix Flix", "The Singing Song", "Here's That Rainy Day", and "Summertime". A nice little set from Jimmy Smith – often overlooked amidst the flurry of early 60s Blue Notes, but a really strong session! The group on the set is Jimmy's trio with Quentin Warren on guitar and Don Bailey on drums – but they're augmented here by Lou Donaldson, whose crafty work on alto really opens the set up. Tracks are shortish and mostly familiar, but done with a laidback and easy groove that brings out the best in Jimmy's late Blue Note Hammond stylings. A rare one from Teddy – and one of his hippest records! Unlike some of Edwards other 60s sides, which are competent but uncompelling bop-inflected ones, this set grooves in a soulful way that's clearly influenced by the Blue Note sound of the mid 60s, and which has Edwards really stretching out his solos to meet the energy of the players on the set. Jimmy Owens is on trumpet, Cedar Walton plays piano, and the rest of the group includes Garnett Brown, Ben Tucker, and Lenny McBrowne. Tracks are all pretty darn groovy – and trust us, Edwards will blow your socks off! The group's nicely restrained and very moody – playing here in a mellow late nite mode that offers a good focus on the best horn soloists in the group, yet which also really hangs together perfectly from the slow-moving and eerie tone of the rest of the group. Jimmy Grissom sings a bit on the set, and other players include Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonsalves, Cat Anderson, and Ray Nance – on tracks that include "Day Dream", "Blues", "Frustration", "My Funny Valentine", and "Laura". One of Stan Getz's greatest records – no fooling! This gem often gets overlooked because it was issued in the years between Stan's bossa recordings and his later pop experiments – but trust us, it's a totally solid jazz album, with a quality level that was hardly ever matched by Getz again! The tracks are all long, sweeping, and very spiritual – and the group's a soulful batch of freer players (Chick Corea on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Grady Tate on drums) – all of whom really open Stan up, and drive him to give out some of the best solos of his careers, with a tone that's completely sublime. All tracks are long, and the album includes an amazing version of Corea's "Litha", plus the cuts "Windows", "Con Alma", and "O Grande Amor". One of our favorite jazz albums ever!
