Leo CuypersLeo Cuypers ... LP
BASF (Netherlands), 1972. Very Good+ ... $24.99
Rare solo material from pianist Leo Cuypers – a really wonderful set that gives us a chance to hear his talents in a completely unfettered setting! We know Cuypers best from some of his efforts in groups, and it's a great change to hear him here on his own – working through some amazing original compositions that are filled with life and feeling! At some points, he's got all the wit, energy, and sharp edges of contemporary Misha Mengelberg – but at other times, there's this lyrical cohesion to his music that almost reminds us of the most tuneful moments of Steve Kuhn or Keith Jarrett – an obvious great range of sounds to come from one player in such a small space – which makes the album possibly the greatest illustration of Cuyper's genius we've ever heard. Titles include "Lovely Rita", "Monk's Raus", "Het Cowboylied Van Ome Piet", "One Million Dollar Song", "Tristano Song", and "Lovely Rita". LP, Vinyl record album

Art PepperNo Limit ... LP
Contemporary, 1978. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A nice lost late number from Art Pepper – a freewheeling set of tracks that really show the influence of John Coltrane on Pepper's work – cut with a quartet that includes George Cables on piano, Tony Dumas on "blitz bass", and Carl Burnett on drums. The tracks are long, and two numbers have a really nice Latiny flair – with Art spinning out some aggressive solos on top of fast-running grooves, in a way you'd be surprised to hear on one of his albums from the time! Titles include "Rita San", "My Laurie", "Ballad of The Sad Young Men", and "Mambo De La Pinta". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Joe FarrellSonic Text ... LP
Contemporary, 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful post-CTI work from Joe Farrell – a record that has him stretching out in the kind of long, flowing, and open tunes that have always been the strongest side of his work! The setting is mostly acoustic – save for a bit of electric piano on a few tracks – and players include Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, George Cables on piano, Tony Dumas on bass, and Peter Erskine on drums – hitting some nice chunky rhythms on some of the album's best tracks, and keeping up the funky undercurrent that we always love in Farrell's work. Farrell himself plays tenor, soprano, and flute – and titles include "Sonic Text", "If I Knew Where You're At", "Sweet Rita Suite", "When You're Awake", and "The Jazz Crunch". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bobby HutchersonHighway One ... LP
Columbia, 1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A wicked post-Blue Note session from Bobby Hutcherson – one that's put together in a different way than his previous work, but still completely sublime throughout! The feel is almost to Hutcherson's earlier work what Woody Shaw's Columbia recordings were to his – tighter, with sharper production – yet still wonderfully soulful and with a strong sense of spirit. Key soloists include Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Hubert Laws on flute – and the record also features George Cables on acoustic and electric piano, Cedar Walton on acoustic piano, and Eddie Marshall on drums. Includes the lovely "Sweet Rita Suite", plus "Circle", "Secrets Of Love", and "Bouquet". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... $8.99
An overlooked gem from Joe Mooney – a singer/pianist best known from the 50s, but who works here with some sweet Hammond as well! The group's a nice one – with Mundell Lowe on guitar, Joe Venuto on vibes, and Jerry Dodgion on flute – and tracks include "Cute", "When I Fall In Love", "You Irritate Me So", "She's Not For You", "I Wanna Be Around", "When Sunny Gets Blue" and more. ✨✧ Jan AkkermanTabernakel ... LP
Atco, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Guitarist Jan Akkerman bridges many worlds here – deftly stepping between spare acoustic guitar modes and some much more dynamic electric ones – but all with a sense of care and vision that really makes the record come together! The set begins with a few themes from John Dowland, updated by Akkerman, but still played with an ancient sort of vibe – one that leads into some very cool fusion moments that mix centuries-old aesthetics with the modern – creating a sense of anachronism that really keeps things interesting. Gene Orloff handled some of the larger arrangements, but the focus is always on Akkerman's deft work on the guitar – and titles include "Britannia", "House Of The King", "Javeh", "Lammy", and "A Fantasy". Art FarmerAztec Suite (first cover) ... LP
United Artists, 1959. Very Good+ ... $24.99
A rare Latin outing from trumpeter Art Farmer – one that has him working with the mighty Cuban arranger Chico O'Farrill! The grooves here are hardly "Aztec", as Chico brings a hip postwar vibe to the session – a blend of American jazz and Latin rhythms that's totally great, and played by an all-star array of players conducted by Al Cohn! Side one of the record features the extended "Aztec Suite" – an ambitious number that begins with modern moments that are somewhere in a space between Stan Kenton and Ralph Burns' experiments of this nature, but which always has Farmer's trumpet as the center focus. Side two features tracks that are a bit more conventional Latin jazz – still played by the bigger group, but with an even stronger sense of swing! Titles include "Aztec Suite", "Heat Wave", "Drume Negrita", "Alone Together", "Woody N You", and "Delirio". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono red label pressing with deep groove. Cover has half split seams, light wear and aging, some price sticker remnants, and some light stains in back.)

Shamek Farrah & Norman PersonShamek Farrah & Norman Person Live ... LP
Heritage Industries/BBE (UK), Late 1980s/Early 1990s. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
Saxophonist Shamek Farrah is best known for a pair of legendary 70s albums on the Strata East label – but he was still working strongly in the American jazz underground for years after that – as you'll hear on this brilliant batch of live recordings from the end of the 80s! The album was initially only issued as a cassette sold at gigs, and it shows Farrah sounding wonderful in the company of trumpeter Norman Person – blowing alto and bringing the fire he had on his 70s spiritual jazz recordings – as he and Person work in a few different groups, alongside some especially great piano work from either David Durrah or Sonelius Smith – both players with strong legacies of their own! Garry Hammon joins the pair on tenor on two tracks, Marvin Neal on trombone on one, and the final track is a trio number without Farrah, showing wonderful phrasing from Person next to Smith's piano. All titles are nice and long – and tunes include "Negative Forces", "Aisha", "Footprints", "Timeless Beginning", and "I Remember Clifford". LP, Vinyl record album
(Still sealed.)

✨✧ Group Sounds Four & FiveBlack & White Raga ... LP
Jazz In Britain (UK), Mid 1960s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic group from the British scene at mid 60s – music from a time when the UK world of jazz was exploding from the work of artists like Joe Harriott and Tubby Hayes, but also held some other tremendous talents as well! The group here has trumpeter Henry Lowther and tenorist Lyn Dobson at the core – and also features work from Jon Hiseman on drums, plus piano from Ken McCarthy and bass from Ron Rubin on the quintet tracks, and bass from a pre-Cream Jack Bruce on the quartet titles! Tracks are long, open, and filled with the kind of modern expression you might know from the group of Ian Carr and Don Rendell – often modal rhythms giving strong inspiration to freer solo flights – but always with a sense of soul that keeps things from ever sounding too outside to swing. The whole thing's wonderful – a near-lost slice from these crucial years – with titles that include "Snow", "Straight Away", "Celebrity Stomp", "Night & Day", "Red Planet", "Black & White Raga", and "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise". LP, Vinyl record album
(180 gram pressing. Cover has a slightly bumped corner, but this is a great copy overall.)

✨✧ Idris MuhammadBlack Rhythm Revolution ... LP
Prestige, 1971. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the first records ever as a leader from funky drummer Idris Muhammad – a set that was cut right at the same time Idris was burning up the kit on his classic jazz funk sessions with other Prestige label players! The groove here is tight, funky, and very much in the mode that Muhammad laid down for other bigger soloists – a solid, socking sound that was the early 70s inheritance of the "Popcorn" funk groove of the late 60s. Players here are all great – and include Melvin Sparks on guitar, Harold Mabern on electric piano, and Virgil Jones on trumpet – and tracks include great covers of "Express Yourself" and "Super Bad", plus "Wander" and "Soulful Drums". LP, Vinyl record album
(180 gram Jazz Dispensary black vinyl reissue.)

✨✧ Sonny RollinsSaxophone Colossus ... LP
Prestige, 1956. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Quite possibly THE greatest Sonny Rollins album of the early years – or at least the one that has received the most accolades over the years! The record is a brilliant batch of quartet tracks that reinvents bop through Sonny's complicated, yet seemingly automatic solos – an excellent showcase for his razor-sharp talents for improvisation and invention, played with effortless ease, yet still one of the great bar-setting performances of 50s jazz. The group features Tommy Flanagan, Max Roach, and Doug Watkins – and tunes include an original reading of the perennial Rollins' standard "St. Thomas", plus a great version of "Moritat (Mack The Knife)", and the cuts "Strode Rode" and "Blue 7". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 80s mono yellow label OJC pressing. Cover has lighty bumped corners.)

Denon (Japan), Late 1960s. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Really great work from this American tenorist – a player who made records here during the R&B years, but who eventually found more fame and support over in Japan – where he recorded unique material like this! Many tunes are original, and have Japanese titles – and they feature even better tenor work from Sam than on his American albums – set to arrangements from Akira Arita! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ McCoy TynerEnlightenment ... LP
Milestone, 1973. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A pretty great little live set – recorded at the Montreux Jazz fest in 1973, and featuring one of the better McCoy Tyner groups of the time! The album's a key set in McCoy's stretching out after the passing of Coltrane – a record that draws strongly from his 60s spiritual heritage, but pushes nicely into the next generation – free, but never too free, and really filled with soul and spirit throughout! A key sound of the set comes from saxophonist Azar Lawrence – who plays both soprano and tenor on the date – and rhythm in the group is from Joony Booth on bass and Alphonse Mouzon on drums, both of whom really kick things into gear. Tracks are all pretty long, and titles include Tyner's 3 part "Enlightenment Suite", plus "Presence", "Nebula" and "Walk Spirit Talk Spirit". LP, Vinyl record album
