✨✧ Mayafra ComboMayafra ... LP
Right Tempo (Italy), 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic Fender Rhodes from the Italian scene of the 70s – played by a group who've got a laidback vibe, and a wonderfully soulful sound! The combo features lots of percussion, plus a bit of vocals from Naimi – and the style is maybe a mix of jazz, funk, and Brazilian elements – served up with a wonderfully warm glow. The tracks are all nice and long – with a fantastic flow – and titles include "Mercy Mercy Mercy", "Damballah", "Iffilah Ha Ha", and "Mayafra Blues Waltz". LP, Vinyl record album

Duke EllingtonBlue Light ... LP
Columbia, Late 30s. Very Good+ ... $6.99 9.99
Subtitled "jazz for that relaxed mood", this is actually a great compilation of early work by Ellington's group – recorded for Columbia during the years 1934 to 1939. Somehow, the tracks still end up sounding 30 years ahead of their time – far stronger than most any early 50s big band set might hope to. Recording quality is excellent, and the whole thing's awash in richly chromatic waves of sound. Titles include "Pyramid", "Reminiscing In Tempo", "Tough Truckin", "No Greater Love", and "Finesse". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono 6 eye pressing with deep groove – 1D/1G. Cover has some wear and aging, gloss peel at the right side, and a small sticker in back.)

✨✧ Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersDrum Suite ... LP
Columbia, 1956/1957. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible early experimental album from Art Blakey – one of the first to feature him in expanded percussion format! Side one of the album features the extended "Drum Suite" – a set of 3 tracks ("The Sacrifice", "Cubano Chant", and "Oscalypso") that has Blakey and Jo Jones on drums, joined by Sabu Martinez on bongos and Charles Wright on tympani and gong. Ray Bryant snakes some soulful piano through the set and Oscar Pettiford is on bass and cello – and the overall feeling of the side is similar to some of Blakey's work in the format for Blue Note – like the albums Afro-Drum Orgy or Holiday for Percussion. Side two has straight hard bop, played by Blakey's 1957 combo that included Jackie McLean and Bill Hardman – and the group grooves hard on a classic reading of "Nica's Tempo", plus the cuts "D's Dilemma" and "Just For Marty". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono 6 eye pressing with deep groove – 1AA/1B. Cover has light wear, mostly split seams, and a lightly bent corner.)

✨✧ Evans BradshawLook Out For Evans Bradshaw! ... LP
Riverside, 1958. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Look out is right – because the album's a killer and one of the few sides ever cut by Michigan pianist Evans Bradshaw! Bradshaw's got a hard-hitting approach to the keys that was relatively fresh in the early years of soul jazz – and unlike some of his more famous contemporaries, he never resorts to easy phrasing to put over his sound – and can instead work some complicated magic on the keys that often echoes modern styles of the 50s, but comes across with an earthier feel overall. This debut session is a simple but extremely effective trio outing – with Bradshaw on piano, George Joyner on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Titles include "The Prophet", "Coolin The Blues", "Blueinet", "Angel Eyes", and "Love For Sale". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gary Burton & Stephane GrappelliParis Encounter ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Quite a surprising pairing of talents – and a set that shows that at in the right settings, Stephane Grappelli's still got plenty of modern moments! The core group is really that of vibist Gary Burton – with Steve Swallow on electric bass and Bill Goodwin on drums – both players with an open, spacious feel that's quite different than the usual rhythm group for a Grappelli record – which really opens up the legendary violinist, and has him stretching out wonderfully – especially on some of the more contemporary numbers. Burton's vibes are great at this point – sharp toned, yet incredibly warm too – and titles include "Daphne", "Blue In Green", "Sweet Rain", "Coquette", and "Arpege". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ June ChristyGone For the Day ... LP
Capitol, 1957. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
That's "gone" – as in the way June Christy really sends us – vocals that take us to a place that few other 50s singers could ever hope to reach! June's work here is a masterpiece of melancholic understatement – far less overblown than some of her pop contemporaries, but also filled with feeling in a way that's different from some of the other icy singers of the time. A big part of the album's strength lies with arranger Pete Rugolo – who gives June here some of the same dark corners and modern elements you'd find in her classic Something Cool album – which really hits the right sort of emotion for Christy. Titles include "When The Sun Comes Out", "It's So Peaceful In the Country", "When You Awake", "Lazy Mood", and "Interlude". (Vocalists, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Stanley ClarkeSchool Days ... LP
Nemperor, 1976. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massive hit for Stanley Clarke – a record that has him reigning in some of his wilder elements a bit, and going for a groove that's right in the pocket! There's a definite soul fusion influence going on here – Clarke trying to hit the same groove as some of his contemporaries, and doing a pretty good job of it in the process. Still, the album's never as polished as efforts like this on Blue Note or Elektra – just a bit more focused than before, but in a really good way. David Sancious and Chick Corea both play keyboards on the set – and tracks include "School Days", "Hot Fun", "Desert Song", "The Dancer", and "Quiet Afternoon". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ornette ColemanFree Jazz ... LP
Atlantic, 1961. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The title gets it right – as the album's easily the closest thing to free jazz that Ornette Coleman ever recorded – an album-length improvisation played by a "double quartet" that's overflowing with classic players! The style here is a fair bit like John Coltrane's Ascension album for Impulse – and like that one, the session features Ornette and his contemporaries really stretching out – blowing like never heard before on record, and working in a highly unstructured setting! Other players include Eric Dolphy on bass clarinet, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and Scott LaFaro on bass – alongside regular group members Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and both Ed Blackwell and Billy Higgins on drums. One long track – just titled "Free Jazz"! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Miles DavisTutu ... LP
Warner, 1986. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A nice collaboration between Miles and Marcus Miller from the latter part of Miles career. As much of the recording here is overdubbed, with many multiple instruments played by Miller, it doesn't have the improvised vibe of Miles' classic performances, but the songwriting and arrangements are head and shoulders above much of the contemporary jazz being recorded at the time, Miles is in great form, and the glossy production sits better with us now than ever before. Paulinho DaCosta, George Duke, Michael Urbaniak and Bernard Wright all make guest appearances. 8 tracks in all: "Tutu", "Tomaas", "Portia", "Splatch", "Backyard Ritual", "Perfect Way", Don't Lose Your Mind" and "Full Nelson". ✨✧ Teddy EdwardsHeart & Soul ... LP
Contemporary, 1962. Good ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite albums by Teddy Edwards – and one with some organ in the group! This obscure quartet side has Gerry Wiggins playing a rare bit of Hammond – grooving the group with a lean and open-ended soul jazz approach that really has Edwards blowing at his best! The style sits right up there next to Gene Ammons' best albums of the time, and the rest of the group features Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Milt Turner on drums. Titles include "Smokin", "No Regrets", "A Bag Of Blues", "Wiggin", and "Little Steddy" – all originals that get Edwards past the usual bag of soulful standards! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Clifford JordanAdventurer ... LP
Muse, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A gem of a record from Clifford Jordan – proof that the 70s were possibly the greatest decade for his music! Although most of Jordan's contemporaries from the big tenor days of the 50s really didn't grow much during the 70s, Clifford always continued to develop his style – adding in modes and tones that he'd never played before, working in an ever rich tapestry of jazz that makes just about any of his albums from the time a delight. Even this session – a simple quartet date recorded with Tommy Flanagan, Bill Lee, and Grady Tate – offers lots of wonderful moments, and is kind of a post-righteous 70s soul jazz album, filled with lots of warm tones and straight soulful playing that are almost a back to earth moment after his Strata East years – but still equally expressive. Titles include "He's A Hero", "No More", "Quasimodo", and "Adventurer". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Clifford JordanStarting Time ... LP
Jazzland, 1961. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great early Clifford Jordan record, and a tight bit of jazz from this great Chicago tenor player. Another Chicago favorite, Wilbur Ware, is on bass, and a young Cedar Walton's playing piano, and with warmth like that, Jordan and trumpeter Kenny Dorham sound great next to each other. Loads of original hard bop lines by Jordan, including "Extempore" and "Quittin' Time", plus "Mosaic" and "One Flight Down" by Cedar Walton. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John KlemmerMagnificent Madness ... LP
Elektra, 1980. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Nothing too mad from reedman John Klemmer – but a set that nicely continues that spacey sound that Klemmer first created at Impulse Records, then moved into some warmer, more soulful territory on records like this! Klemmer's still got an incredibly strong sound on tenor – rich and full, and never held back at all – nor prone to some of the more gimmicky flourishes of some of his mainstream contemporaries – and the setting is never too slick or overdone, which seems to suit John just right! Keyboards work nicely in a mellow, spaced-out groove – and Klemmer crackles these effortless lines out in space – of the soulful style we first fell in love with on his earliest work for Chess. The set features guitar from John Tropea, keyboards from Don Grusin, and drums from Harvey Mason – and Klemmer even vocalizes a bit – in a surprisingly strong style for the music. Titles include "Magnificent Madness", "Deja Vu", "Lifesong", "Adventures In Paradise", "I Can't Help It", and "Don't Take Your Love Away". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Karin KrogYou Must Believe In Spring – Songs By Michel Legrand ... LP
Philips, 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite singers and one of our favorite composers – brought together in a dream of a vocal jazz album! We've always loved the tunes that Michel Legrand penned for films of the 60s and 70s – as they've got a depth, sincerity, and jazziness that goes beyond most of his contemporaries – but they've also never sounded better than in the hands of vocalist Karin Krog and arranger Palle Mikkelborg, who both really deliver a unique twist on the Legrand sound! Mikkelborg's arrangements for the set are extremely beautiful – sometimes using funky backings, sometimes softer strings – but always getting the right balance between emotion and grooviness that Legrand brought to his original recordings of the work. And guitarist Philip Catherine plays some nicely complicated lines that electrify the tunes with a weird, moody feel – often "singing" alongside Karin's deeply icy vocals in a really wonderful way. The tracks are all taken at slightly longer readings than you might expect, which makes for even more room for creative invention – and titles include "Watch What Happens", "Ask Yourself Why", "I Will Wait For You", "Once Upon A Summertime", and "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life". ✨✧ Shelly Manne, Andre Previn & Red MitchellBells Are Ringing ... LP
Contemporary, 1958. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked set from the late 50s show-meets-jazz run of Shelly Manne and Andre Previn – a cool jazz instrumental take on the score to Bells Are Ringing! As with other Manne/Previn pairings, the music is incredibly sprightly – some of the best jazz Andre ever recorded in the 50s, with piano lines that are a lot more fluid and freewheeling than on his mood music sets for other labels – and Manne's careful approach to percussion makes for lots of light, lyrical rhythms – which have plenty of support in spirit from the wonderful bass of Red Mitchell. Titles include two versions of "The Party's Over" – one slow, one as a "party" version – plus "I Met A Girl", "Just In Time", "It's A Perfect Relationshi", "Is It A Crime", "Mu Cha Cha", and "Long Before I Knew You". ✨✧ Jackie ParisSong Is Paris ... LP
Impulse, 1962. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A rare gem by singer Jackie Paris – an underrecorded LA singer from the 50s and 60s, with a sound and style that's somewhere between early Mark Murphy and later Bobby Troup! Paris has less of the vocalese approach of some of his contemporaries – and is also lacking the heavy vocal style of singers like Johnny Hartman or Billy Eckstine – which means that he's got a bright, to the point approach that's rare for singers of his generation. Arrangements on the set are by Bobby Scott – who does a good job of shifting between jazzy and moody to fit the range of the material – and titles include "Jenny", "My Very Good Friend In The Looking Glass", "Nobody Loses All The Time", "Duke's Place", "Thad's Blues", and "Cinderella". ✨✧ Art PepperSmack Up ... LP
Contemporary, 1960. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Excellent small group material from modern alto genius Art Pepper – a set that might well be our favorite of all the classic albums he cut for Contemporary Records! The album's got quite a strange title – Smack Up, a very strange choice, given Pepper's well-known experience as a junkie – and the set features some edgey work that really pushes Art away from the sweeter sounds of a few years before – material that maybe reflects some of the troubles he'd been going through, which shows up in the music in some really great ways. The group is a lean quintet – with Jack Sheldon on trumpet, Pete Jolly on piano, Jimmy Bond on bass, and Frank Butler on drums – and there's some slightly off-kilter tracks on the set that really make it sparkle, including Duane Tatro's "Maybe Next Year", Ornette's "Tears Inside", and Harold Land's "Smack Up" – the irony of which, we're sure, was not lost on Art Pepper! Also includes Pepper's own "Las Cuevas De Mario". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Eugene B RedmondBlood Links & Sacred Places – A Poetic Excursion Thru The Black Experience ... LP
Black River Writers, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Righteous poetry and jazz from Eugene Redmond – aka Illu Gan Gan – a very spiritual figure from the early 70s Bay Area scene! The album was recorded live in the studio, in a style that has Redmond introducing his work, then moving into dramatic recitations backed up by small combo jazz instrumentation that includes guitar, percussion, and soprano sax. The feel is open and free, almost an African-American take on the beat poetry style of late 50s San Francisco – but with themes that are more righteous, and a bad-talking style that puts the record in the same sphere as contemporaneous work by Camille Yarbrough, Jayne Cortez, Wanda Robinson, and even Iceberg Slim. Titles include "Hummin Hookin & Cookin", "Sun Ritual", "Epigrams For My Father", "River Of Bones & Flesh & Blood", "The Edge Of Myself", and "All Athighed In Black". ✨✧ Sonny RollinsWay Out West ... LP
Contemporary, 1957. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A classic set that brings the east coast tenor of Sonny Rollins into contact with a west coast rhythm section of Ray Brown and Shelly Manne! Despite Rollins' silly look on the cover, and the album's overall "western" theme, the session's a brilliant one – right up there with Sonny's strongest trio sides of the late 50s, and a key link in a string of excellent recordings for Blue Note, Prestige, and Riverside! The lack of a piano really opens up the style of the set – letting Sonny explore freely on his solos, while Brown's bass and Manne's drums do more than enough to keep the rhythms going on their own. Solos aren't as "out" as on the Village Vanguard sessions, but certainly every bit as inspired – and titles include "I'm An Old Cowhand", "Solitude", "Come, Gone", "Way Out West", and "Wagon Wheels". ✨✧ Charlie ShaversCharlie Shavers At Le Crazy Horse Saloon In Paris ... LP
Everest, 1964. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Trumpter Charlie Shavers found plenty of fame in Paris during the postwar years – just the right sort of audience to appreciate his blend of trad inspirations and more contemporary swing! And this album's a perfect example of the Shavers style that shone so brightly at the time – bold, well-blown trumpet in the lead, sometimes mixed with vocals that almost echo a Louis Prima mode, but with a bit more of a broken-down Jack Teagarden feel, too. The tunes are short, but pack plenty of punch – and titles include "The Man With A Horn", "Back Home Again In Indiana", "Fly Me To The Moon", "But Beautiful", "Ja Da", and "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone". Jimmy SmithCrazy! Baby ... LP
Blue Note, 1960. Very Good- ... $14.99 19.99
One of Jimmy's most classic albums for Blue Note – and a key example of why his solo skills on the organ surpassed most of his contemporaries! The record's got a stripped-down trio group of Jimmy, guitarist Quentin Warren, and drummer Donald Bailey – working through mostly familiar numbers, but taking them to places previously unheard of! The best example of this is the album's amazing version of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" – a classic groover that takes the old snoozer and pumps it up with a snapping rhythm, then features Jimmy really working the whole thing over with an incredible solo! A similar format's applied to numbers that include "Mack the Knife", "Night in Tunisia", "What's New", and "Makin Whoopee" – and the album soars with an easy groove that's every bit of Jimmy at his best! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jimmy SmithHoochie Cooche Man ... LP
Verve, 1966. Very Good Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Jimmy pays tribute to an earlier generation of R&B – in a hard-wailing set of soul jazz, done with backings from the legendary Oliver Nelson! A few tracks feature vocals by Jimmy, in a rough bluesy style, and others have some harmonica by Buddy Lucas – in a raspy, hard-wailing mode that still fits in nicely with the jazzier style of the album. Jimmy's organ is right up front on most numbers – recorded with that full, dynamic sound that makes so many of his Verve albums a treasure – and the best numbers have a more contemporary 60s groove alongside the older bluesy roots. Grady Tate plays drums – surprisingly funky at times – and other players include Melba Liston and Tom McIntosh on trombones, Billy Butler on guitar, Bob Cranshaw on Fender bass, and Joe Newman on trumpet. Titles include "Hi Heel Sneakers", "TNT", "Boom Boom", "Ain't That Just Like A Woman", and "One Mint Julep". LP, Vinyl record album

Grover Washington JrBest Is Yet To Come ... LP
Elektra, 1982. Very Good+ ... $4.99
A set that strongly continues the special spirit that Grover Washington brought to his music during the Elektra Records years – as one of the few artists who really found a way to move forward from the style of 70s jazz funk, but not fall into some of the smoother jazz cliches that were about to envelop his contemporaries! Part of the strength of the record lies in Grover's strongly soul-based sense of timing – allowing for just the right amount of space between the notes to remind you that you're listening to a jazz soloist first and foremost, even when a guest like Patti Labelle might step in for a bit of vocals. Titles include "Brazilian Memories", "Mixty Motions", "Can You Dig It", "I'll Be With You", "Things Are Getting Better", and "The Best Is Yet To Come". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Randy WestonRandy Weston Trio – Unique Modern Jazz Stylings (10 inch LP) ... LP
Riverside, 1955. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The title certainly gets it right – as the album features some of the first unique modern work by Randy Weston on wax – important trio material that was as important as key 50s sides by Thelonious Monk or Herbie Nichols! The session has Randy working with Sam Gill on bass and Art Blakey on drums – but the showcase here is really on Weston's work on the keys, which are poised somewhere between the more contemporary mainstream scene of New York at the time, and the angular modernists that this album made Weston a key part of. Titles include the original compositions "Zulu", "Pam's Waltz", and "Solemn Meditation" – the last of which is by Gill – plus "Again" and "If You Could See Me Now". LP, Vinyl record album
(Vinyl is great! Cover has a small bit of masking tape, but no splits at all – and looks very nice too.)
