✨✧ Herbie MannStanding Ovation At Newport ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Herbie Mann got a standing ovation for this performance – at least if the title is to be believed – and considering the grooves on the set, it was all for very good reason! The album's one of the few to feature Mann in the company of pianist Chick Corea – who steps out here with some hard, soulful, Latin-inflected energy that's totally great – and which really makes the group cook. Other players include Dave Pike on vibes and Patato Valdes on congas – and the great Ben Tucker joins the group on an extremely popular 10 minute version of his composition "Comin Home Baby", one of Herbie's all-time hits. The format is very much in that best live performance style of Herbie's best records of the 60s – very open and freewheeling – and other tracks are equally long and jazzy, with titles that include "Mushi Mushi" and "Patato". LP, Vinyl record album
(Green & blue label stereo pressing. Cover has lightly bent corners, with a manufacturing crimp, ink stamp, and original purchase date written in pen in back.)

✨✧ Bobby ChristianVibe-Brations ... LP
Ovation, 1971. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A very groovy set of short vibes-based instrumentals – played by Chicago jazzman Bobby Christian, a great player who did a fair bit of studio work in the city (including some for the Gus Giordano dance studio series), but who rarely ever got to record much on his own. The cuts are all short and pop/jazz sounding – with a self professed "tuned-in, turned-on" sound – and titles include "Boogaloo", "Mooganga", "To Whom May We Turn", and groovy covers of "Sunny" and "Games People Play". ✨✧ Joe MorelloAnother Step Forward ... LP
Ovation, 1969. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Joe Morello is best known the to the world as the drummer for the Dave Brubeck Quartet, but he also cut some very nice LPs on his own, and this is one of them. The record is a nice set of jazzy tracks, with kind of a groovy 60s feel, and loud swinging arrangements that are nicely punctuated by Morello's tight drumming. Buddy Terry plays tenor, and his solos are in the lead on a lot of tracks. Titles include "Give Me A Simple Tune", "Church Key", "Not So Fast", and "The Sound Of Silence". LP, Vinyl record album
(Sealed! Shrink has a quad-compatible sticker.)

✨✧ Dieter Bihlmaier SelectionMaskerade ... LP
Creative (Germany), 1974. Sealed Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A very open, spacious sort of set from the German jazz scene of the 70s – one that's very different than both the hard-driving fusion of the time, and some of the more free jazz-styled work from the avant garde! There's a lean lineup here – a group that features a variety of flutes from leader Dieter Bihlmaier, mixed with the bass of Jan Jankeje and drums and percussion of Gerhard Ziegler – plus added vibes from Gerhard Dietz on the second half of the record, which really helps the sound take off. Overall, there's almost a style that's in the more experimental, spiritual side of the MPS/Saba world, with a similar care for the overall sound and conception of the set – on titles that include "Arco Oriental", "Roulette", "Ovation", "Maskerade", "Polyp's Lullaby", and "Echoes". ✨✧ Eric DolphyLast Date ... CD
Limelight (Japan), 1964. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fitting title for a great album – Eric Dolphy's last live recording, performed on June 2, 1964, with a trio of youngsters that included two of the greatest names in European avant garde jazz – Misha Mengelberg and Han Bennink! The sound is jagged and a bit free – showing the way towards even greater innovations that might have marked Dolphy's 60s years, had he not been taken from us so quickly! The album's filled with beautiful Dolphy playing in his late mode – on alto, flute, and bass clarinet – and tracks include "The Madrig Speaks, The Panther Walks", "Miss Ann", and "Hypochristmutreefuz". ✨✧ Yusef LateefGolden Flute ... CD
Impulse, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
Not just a flute session from Yusef Lateef – as the set's a record with plenty of saxophone as well as the instrument named in the title! Yusef's mixing his bag nicely for this mid 60s classic – working through tunes that are a mixture of soulful hardbop and eastern exoticism – a shift that's marked by Lateef's changing reed work on tenor, flute, and oboe! The group's a hip quartet with players from Lateef's Detroit scene – the always-great Hugh Lawson on piano, plus Herman Wright on bass, and a young Roy Brooks on drums – all working with Lateef in a sound that almost points the way towards some of the innovations in 70s soul jazz, and which has surprisingly righteous touches that you wouldn't expect from such a simple package! Titles include Brooks' excellent groover "The Smart Set", plus "Oasis", "Road Runner", "The Golden Flute", and "Head Hunters". CD
(2004 digipak pressing – in great shape with the Impulse obi!)

Manhattan Jazz OrchestraLes Liaisons Dangereuses (No Problem) ... CD
Sweet Basil (Japan), 1991. Used ... $13.99
A wonderful set from this mighty ensemble – a record that opens up immediately in a range of complex colors and tones, yet all with a quality that still manages to swing throughout! That balance is part of the real strengths of pianist/arranger David Matthews at this point in his career – able to draw on a few decades' worth of innovation in big band material, yet all without hitting you over the head with it – almost a return to the more organic shifts of sounds you'd get in a 50s arranger like Ralph Burns. The players are all great – and include Randy Brecker and Byron Stripling on trumpet, George Young and Chris Hunter on saxes, and Danny Gottlieb on drums – and titles include "Doxy", "Spanish Blue", "Sir Duke", "One Black Orchid", and a great take on Duke Jordan's "No Problem". CD

Plastic People Of The UniversePrague – Egon Bondy's Happy Hearts Club Banned ... LP
Guerilla/Moved By Sound (UK), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 39.99
An amazing avant session from the Czech scene of the 70s – and a record that may well be one of the most important to come out of the Eastern Bloc during the decade! Plastic People Of The Universe are a group who managed a legend that went way past their very tight national boundaries – kind of a secret global sense of attention that was spread through the intellectual underground, and forever cemented with this masterpiece of music! The album effortlessly shifts between free jazz, avant experimentation, art rock, and other mode used in these dark and powerful ways – a strong-burning torch that let the world know that Czech innovation was alive and well, even during years of strong Soviet oppression. Instrumentation mixes alto sax, theremin, claviphone, guitar, violin, and double drums – and titles include "The Wondrous Mandarin", "Look At You, All Sound Asleep", "Past My Window", "Constipation", and "Toxica". (Rock, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album
