✨✧ Cal TjaderBlack Orchid (Cal Tjader Goes Latin/Cal Tjader Quintet) ... CD
Fantasy, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Well, in our opinion, Cal went Latin right from the start, practically. Still, this "Goes Latin" LP is one of his best of the genre from the old days, and features a host of great players like Lonnie Hewitt, Chombo Silva, Mongo Santamaria, Paul Horn, and Willie Bobo. The album includes Cal's semi-hit "Black Orchid", plus "Mi China", "Bonita", "Contigo", and "Mambo At The M". Very nice, with a sound that would become Cal's trademark in the years right after this album. Cal Tjader Quintet is a great little Latin session from Cal – recorded with extra percussion from Benny Velarde and Luis Miranda, plus rhythm from the Duran brothers, Manuel (piano) and Carlos (bass). The groove's nice and heavy, pretty driving on most cuts, a perfect foil for Cal's jazzy vibes. Titles include "A Minor Goof", "Laura", "Lullaby In Birdland", "Undecided", and Cal's classic reading of Tito Puente's "Philadelphia Mambo". CD

✨✧ Three SoundsBlack Orchid ... LP
Blue Note, 1962. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the most evocative title of all the Three Sounds albums of the 60s – and one that really gets at the dark beauty of the entire record! By the time of this release (the group's 7th for Blue Note), Gene Harris and the trio had really come into their own – and were moving past simple soul jazz modes into this wonderful blend of grooviness and lyricism – still very much beholden to Harris' rhythmic approach to the keys, but also filled with loads of complicated lines, especially from the group's wonderful bassist Andrew Simpkins – whose round tone is especially great on the mellow numbers. Titles include Randy Weston's "Saucer Eyes" , Neal Hefti's "Black Orchid", and the tracks "Don't Go Don't Go" and "Oh Well Oh Well", both originals by Gene Harris. LP, Vinyl record album

Manhattan Jazz OrchestraLes Liaisons Dangereuses (No Problem) ... CD
Sweet Basil (Japan), 1991. Used ... $13.99
A wonderful set from this mighty ensemble – a record that opens up immediately in a range of complex colors and tones, yet all with a quality that still manages to swing throughout! That balance is part of the real strengths of pianist/arranger David Matthews at this point in his career – able to draw on a few decades' worth of innovation in big band material, yet all without hitting you over the head with it – almost a return to the more organic shifts of sounds you'd get in a 50s arranger like Ralph Burns. The players are all great – and include Randy Brecker and Byron Stripling on trumpet, George Young and Chris Hunter on saxes, and Danny Gottlieb on drums – and titles include "Doxy", "Spanish Blue", "Sir Duke", "One Black Orchid", and a great take on Duke Jordan's "No Problem". ✨✧ Gene RussellNew Direction ... LP
Black Jazz, 1971. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet funky jazz from pianist Gene Russell – one of the hippest albums he ever recorded! Russell's a pianist with a wonderfully fluid touch – used here to near perfection in a small combo date that really stands out from most of his other albums – just the kind of effort we'd have to expect at the time, given that Gene was the head of the Black Jazz label! The sound is acoustic, but has a definite sense of electricity to Russell's phrasing on the piano – a bit like work from Vince Guaraldi from the time, when he was shifting between acoustic and electric – as if the latter instrument held on and helped shape the acoustic sound. The rest of the group features Henry Franklin on bass, Steve Glover on drums, and Tony William on congas – and the groove is kind of a soulful extrapolation of a core piano trio vibe – 60s soul jazz taken to hipper 70s territory. Titles include a great cover of "Listen Here", plus "Black Orchid", "Hitting the Jug", "Making Bread", and a version of "Silver's Serenade". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover has a cut corner and some light wear – but this is still a nice copy overall.)

✨✧ Joe FarrellOutback ... LP
CTI, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A killer set from Joe Farrell – one of the 70s greatest reed players, and an always-exciting talent who was one of the first artists to really use the extended CTI format to break into a whole new level! The set's a drawn-out quintet side, with Chick Corea on electric piano, Buster Williams on bass, Elvin Jones on drums, and Airto on percussion. Farrell was playing with Jones at the time, and the album's got some of their strong choppy reed/percussion interplay – but with a sharpness and focus that you don't always hear on Elvin's records! Tracks are all long – and titles include "Outback", "Sound Down", and "Bleeding Orchid". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Includes the CTI inner sleeve. Cover has light wear and aging.)

Rex KonaWild Orchids – Exotic Sounds Of Rex Kona & His Mandarins ... LP
Columbia, 1964. Very Good ... $11.99 14.99
Wonderful stuff – way more than just an easy instrumental album, and a great batch of exotic tunes with lots of jazzy touches! There's enough of the Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman influence here – but Rex and group take the sound a lot further, by playing like a true small combo, and swinging the tunes with a heck of a lot more jazz than you'd expect. Grooves are nice, and get quite Latiny at times – and the feel of the record almost reminds us of some of Bobby Montez work for Pacific Jazz in the late 50s. Titles include "Ginza Girl", "Sushi", "Patricia", "Wild Orchids", "Bird Train", "Bushi Bushi", and "Will He Like Me". (Now Sound, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Donald Byrd & Dexter GordonLost Recordings – Berlin Studio Session 1963 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Lost Recordings (France), 1963. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really unique session from these two great players – a rare moment when both were brought together in the studio – performing here in a German session that really knocks it out of the park, and has a different vibe than early 60s Blue Note material from either player! In addition to Donald Byrd on trumpet and Dexter Gordon on tenor, the group also features Herb Geller on alto and Ake Persson on trombone – horns criss-crossing in a great way, but with plenty of room for solos, especially from Byrd, who is sublime! The group also features Heinz Kitschenberg on guitar, with no piano at all – which makes for a nice change in the sound – and remaining players include Jurgen Ehlers on bass and Joe Harris on drums. The set's a bit short, just four tracks in all – but all the tunes are wonderful – and titles include "An Air For The Heir", "The Dexter Byrd", "Fly Me To The Moon", and "Blue Orchids". ✨✧ Enrique VillegasBaladas De Amor ... CD
RGS (Argentina), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful record, and very different than you might expect from the title – as this set of ballads is delivered with a sharply modern edge from pianist Enrique Villegas – nice and loose, with only the bass of Jorge Lopez Ruiz for accompaniment! Most of the tunes are familiar, but they're delivered with a modernist mode that's somewhere between Thelonious Monk and Martial Solal – both players who would shine equally well in such a setting, and really make their own sort of music with these tunes – a lineup that includes "Love Walked In", "I'm In The Mood For Love", "Blue Orchids", "Love Letters", "Reverie", and "Easy To Love". ✨✧ Johnny FrigoI Love John Frigo He Swings ... CD
Mercury/Verve, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
John, aka Johnny Frigo, who's best known to our set for the rare dynamite jazz dance sides he recorded later on, and to the jazz world at large for his work as a bassist, leads a small group on this rare, early full length for Mercury as a leader on his first instrument – the violin! It's a pretty sweet set, and really not at all the token late 50s swing set you'd expect from the title, and owes as much or more to the bop scene at the time. Frigo's lead violin gives the tunes kind of a cinematic sweep – and he's accompanied by Dick Marx on piano, Ray Brown on bass, Norm Jeffries on drums and others. Tracks include "What A Difference A Day Made", "Polka Dots And Moon Beams", "Blue Orchids", "Moonlight In Vermont", "Is Love Good To Me" and more. CD
