Tony Allen & Hugh MasekelaRejoice (180 gram pressing) ... LP
World Circuit, 2020. New Copy ... $23.99 24.98
A really fantastic collaboration between two pioneers of African music – and a set that nicely opens both into the jazziest side of their talents! Hugh Masekela blows flugelhorn, and Tony Allen handles drums and plenty of percussion – and although both artists sing a bit, the main focus here is really on the instrumentation – as half the album's tracks are instrumentals, and there's plenty of room for solos over the really great rhythms in the mix! The lineup of players is great, too – tight, but with some nice surprises – including tenor from Steve Williamson, vibes from Lewis Wright, and keyboards from Joe Armon Jones – on titles that include "Robbers Thugs & Muggers", "Agbada Bougou", "Obama Shuffle Street Blues", "We've Landed", "Slow Bones", and "Never". (Global Grooves, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Greg FoatSymphonie Pacifique (with bonus download) ... LP
Strut (UK), 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the most ambitious albums to date from the mighty Greg Foat – a set that's different than some of his more intimate affairs, in that it features key contributions from British jazz giants both young and old – all working with Greg's piano, Fender Rhodes, and vibes in a style that's deeply spiritual, and filled with power! The album's hardly the pacific affair you might guess from the title – nothing too placid, as the energy really builds between members of a lineup that includes Moses Boyd and Clark Tracey on drums, Heather Wrighton on harp, Art Themen on tenor and soprano, Eric Young on percussion, and Warren Hampshire on guitars – all at a level that makes the record the deepest jazz album that Foat has ever given us! Titles include "Pointe Venus", "Mother's Love", "After The Storm", "Island Life", "Man Vs Machine", "Nikinakinu", "Anticipation", and "Symphonie Pacifique". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Pharoah SandersWelcome To Love (180 gram clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Timeless/Tidal Waves, 1991. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Laidback, soulful work from Pharoah Sanders – a record that showcases a very different side of his talents than you might know from his classic albums on Impulse Records – but a side that's an equally great revelation overall! The album features mostly older jazz standards, blown by Pharoah in a mellow, late nite sort of mode – working with help from William Henderson on piano, Stafford James on bass, and Ecclesion Wainwright on drums. The format is surprisingly captivating, largely because Pharoah's tone is always such a treat – and he sparkles with a majesty on the set that captures our ear a lot more than we expected! The whole thing's almost got the feel of some of Coltrane's earlier ballad work – and titles include "The Nearness Of You", "Nancy", "I Want To Talk About You", "Say It Over And Over Again", "Polkadots & Moonbeams", and "You Don't Know What Love Is". LP, Vinyl record album
(Clear vinyl pressing limited to just 200 copies!)
