A beautiful little album from the young John Coltrane, and one that hides its strong sense of depth behind a familiar jazz standard used as a title! In some way, the record is almost experimental for the time – as side one features the tenor of Coltrane alongside just the bass of Earl May and drums of Art Taylor – a saxophone trio setting that Sonny Rollins would used in a more progressive mode, but which here allows Coltrane to demonstrate his unique tenor phrasing on ballads, but in ways that are even set more free than his earlier material with Miles Davis. Side two adds in the piano of Red Garland, alongside bass from Paul Chambers, and drums from either Albert Heath or Louis Hayes – and the trumpet of Donald Byrd joins in on one track too. Trio tracks include "I Love You" and "Like Someone In Love", as well as the original "Trane's Slow Blues" – and Byrd plays on "Lush Life", and steps out on "I Hear A Rhapsody". Stitt in any group is always a treat – and here, working with Miles, he turns in some of his most far-reaching solos of the period – very different than the shorter, more economical work of his studio albums – and even different than some of his longer-form material on Prestige to come! Stitt really rises to meet Miles in spirit – maybe in part because of the rest of the group features the famous rhythm trio of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – moving hard and with a great sense of modal energy, on titles that include "Four", "All Of You", "No Blues", "Two Bass Hit", "Walkin", "Autumn Leaves", "So What", "If I Were A Bell", and "Round Midnight". A great session from 1959 – one that features John Coltrane playing tenor in a combo that's billed as being led by altoist Cannonball Adderley – but which is really more of a Miles Davis combo, without Miles! The set was recorded in Chicago when both were stopping through the city with Miles Davis' combo at the time – and since the rhythm section includes Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – the album's essentially a Kind Of Blue-era Miles album, recorded without Miles on trumpet, and grooving in a slightly more soul-based Adderley mode! Given the presence of Coltrane, there's a bit less of the gutbuckety soul jazz that Cannon was cutting in his own Quintet – but that's more than ok with us, as the Coltrane solos more than make up for that difference! The set's got 2 great originals by Coltrane – "The Sleeper" and "Grand Central" – plus the cuts "Wabash" and "Limehouse Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
