One of the few great records that modern bassist Paul Chambers made as a leader – a rare treasure given to the world before he left this planet all too soon! Chambers is maybe best remembered for some of his late 50s work with Miles Davis and John Coltrane – and the session also marks a key early appearance on Blue Note for Coltrane on tenor – acting as a sideman here, instead of a leader – but also bringing a really deep vibe to an all-star lineup that also includes Donald Byrd on trumpet, Horace Silver on piano, Kenny Burrell on guitar, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. The writing is great, and the group has a nice dark edge that gives the session a slightly different sound than other Blue Note albums from the time. An assortment of recordings from Bud's legendary years in Paris – tracks recorded between 1957 and 1961, with players that include Clark Terry, Zoot Sims, Barney Wilen, Kenny Clarke, and Daniel Humair. Tracks are mostly short – about as short as those on Bud's studio sides from the time – but the album does feature two nice long cuts, versions of "Groovin High" and "Blue Bud Blues/52nd Street Theme", both of which run for around 12 minutes each. Other tracks include "Buzzy", "Shaw Nuff", "Omicron", "Yesterdays", and "No Problem". Tracks were previously released by Mythic Sound, but are represented here with new remastering! CD
