Low-burning tenor from Jerry Bergonzi – a player we grow to appreciate more and more as the years go by! Jerry starts this set off with a great reading of Joe Henderson's "Inner Urge" – which is a very apt choice, as Bergonzi's tenor has all the deep soul and modern edges we loved in Henderson's early Blue Note work – a real breath of fresh air when Jerry first came on the scene, and still holding up beautifully over the years! Mulgrew Miller's piano provides some great support here, too – supporting Bergonzi's vibe beautifully with lots of dark, thoughtful lines – even on the ballad numbers – and the rest of the group features Adam Nussbaum on drums and Dave Santoro on bass. A landmark recording – one of a handful of early documents of the avant garde LA scene, featuring a nimble quartet headed up by the inventive frontline of John Carter on reeds and Bobby Bradford on trumpet, over the fluid rhythm team of Tom Williamson on bass and Chicago expatriate Bruz Freeman on drums! Carter and Bradford's energetic approach followed its own line of development, much in the way that other small cells of improvisers were developing their own take on the "new thing" in the post-Coltrane/Coleman environment of the late 60s and early 70s throughout the country. The compositions unfold in a way that implies both multi-linear improvisation and composed events, but blurs the line between the two, all the while played with a great deal of fire and few of the intellectual abstractions of other free players! Mindblowing work from Alice Coltrane – an album of incredible beauty that easily sits with the best of her classic early recordings for Impulse! The album's got a spare, contemplative quality, but it's also never sleepy – and instead steps forth with the tonal building and modal moving styles of classics albums like Ptah The El Daoud and Huntington Ashram Monastery. Most tracks feature a trio or quartet – with players that include Ravi Coltrane on saxes, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Charlie Haden on bass. Alice plays some great Wurlitzer organ on a few cuts – getting this really wonderful "flat" tone to the instrument, one that almost has the same spiritual undertones as a harmonium. The whole thing's great – far better than we could have expected – and titles include "Sita Ram", "Translinear Light", "This Train", "Blue Nile", "Triloka", and "Crescent". CD

One of the most perfectly crafted moments of Lou Donaldson's hardbop genius at Blue Note – and a beautiful example of the way that Lou could handle the alto sax with a sharpness that earned him a place in the post-Parker lineage – but also a sense of soul that was miles away from Bird! The setting here is a quintet – with Bill Hardman on trumpet, Horace Parlan on piano, Al Harewood on drums, and either Sam Jones or Laymon Jackson on bass – a great group who set up a warmly rolling groove that's perfect for Donaldson – tight, but never uptight, and with just the right sort of vibe to move along with Lou's sense of energy. Donaldson's horn is beautifully precise throughout, and the whole thing's recorded with impeccable Rudy Van Gelder clarity. Titles include "The Truth", "Good Grease", "Blues For JP", and "Politely". A gem of a record from the late 60s British scene – one based around the sound poems of writer and poet Terry Durham! The record features Duram speaking and singing his own lyrics – supported by musical backings arranged by John Coleman, shaded in by some wonderful work by players that include Alan Parker on guitar, Evan Parker on saxes, and Chris Karan (from the Dudley Moore and Roy Budd trios) on some especially nice drums! Despite the poetic approach of the session, Durham's rough vocals give it a real sense of humanity – with none of the high-art pretension you might expect, and a real "everyman" sort of feel that comes from the overall delivery of the tunes. There's a nice link here between the other British jazz and rock experiments of the time – and in a way, Durham's a lost link in a lineage of hipper British artists that include Nick Drake and Scott Walker. A few tracks even get a bit funky, and titles include "The Fortunate Isles", "Sleep Train", "White Room Dreaming", "Branwells Corner", "Crystal Telephone", "Moving Through My Life", and "Stills From A Late Nite Movie". Way more than just a look at the Premonition recordings of Chicago tenor legend Von Freeman – as the set also features some unreleased tracks, and a bonus DVD too! The package is a great illustration of Freeman's greatness on Premonition – perhaps the one label who really managed to get his sound right – and find a way to capture, in the studio, that deep soul, and long-blown approach to creativity that Freeman brings to the tenor – part of a Chicago lineage that includes Johnny Griffin, Clifford Jordan, and Gene Ammons – all contemporaries of Von who left the Windy City to find fame. Unreleased titles include "This Is Always", "It's Impossible", and "Moose The Mooche" – and other tracks include "Blue Bossa", "I'll Never Be Free", "My Little Brown Book", "I Like The Sunrise", "Blue Pres", "Footprints", "Chant Time", and "Ski-Wee". DVD features a bonus interview with critic Neil Tesser – and footage from an event in which 75th street was renamed "Von Freeman Way"! CD

American trombonist Allen Hermann teams up here with Japanese trombonist Itsumi Komano – a player you might know from her work in the Bon Bones duo, and one who sounds nicely different here! The twin horn approach sometimes shows a lineage with JJ Johnson and Kai Winding in their small group records – tight leads, then very individual solos – but Hermann and Komano also have this way of crafting crisp colors of their own, by really finding a resonance between the horns in all these different ways that change up nicely from track to track. The rest of the group features Asami Yato on piano, Yutaka Yoshida on bass, and Yusuke Yaginuma on drums – and titles include "I Could Write A Book", "How Insensitive", "Early On", "Blues For A & I", "It Was A Beautiful Thing", and "Hear & Now".
