✨✧ Detroit Jazz Composers LtdHastings St. Jazz Experience ... LP
Midnite, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Sublime spiritual jazz from the 70s scene in Detroit – and a record that really represents an evolution of the previous sounds that you might have heard on the Motorcity's Tribe Records! The sound here is straightforward and soulful – a bit of electricity at the bottom and some fluidly gliding horn work on the top – plus some key vocals from a group that includes Kim Weston in the lead, supported by other female singers – in a righteous mode that really makes the best tunes sparkle! Other players include Phil Ranelin on trombone, Nasi Hafiz on vibes, Miller Brisker on tenor and piano, and Sylvia Truner on harp – all working together in a largeish group with the best spiritual energy of groups on Strata East! The whole thing's great – a beautiful lost treasure, and the kind of record that's rarely carried off so perfectly – and titles include "Song For M", "A Little Love For You", "Mark I", "Ja-Mil", "Nobody Had To Tell Me", "Arjuna", and "Now You're Gone". Dexter GordonDexter Gordon LTD – Live At The Left Bank ... CD
Prestige, 1969. Used ... $6.99
A great live set from Dexter Gordon – recorded in the late 60s, but previously unreleased – and featuring a rare appearance from Bobby Timmons on piano! Gordon and Timmons are a rare treat together – and they're working here in the fully-extended, quite open-ended mode of the Left Bank jazz society in Baltimore – well recorded, and with plenty of room for long solos, especially from Dex! Timmons' piano work brings a nice sense of force, focus, and grooves to the tracks – and the rest of the group features Victor Gaskin on bass and Percy Brice on drums – on titles that include "Boston Bernie", "Broadway", "Blues Up & Down", and "In A Sentimental Mood". ✨✧ Les McCannLes McCann Ltd In New York ... LP
Pacific Jazz, 1961. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A killer live set by Les McCann – a rare 60s outing that moves past his more familiar trio format, and adds some horn players to the mix! The change is wonderful – as the set features work from Blue Mitchell on trumpet, and both Stanley Turrentine and Frank Haines on tenor – players who work with Les on longer tracks that really pick up an even stronger 60s soul jazz vibe than before – while McCann handles piano with his core group that includes Herbie Lewis on bass and Ron Jefferson on drums. The set feels much more like a Blue Note title than some of Les McCann's other Pacific Jazz material of the early 60s – and titles include "Cha Cha Twist", "Chip Monck", and "Maxie's Changes". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono black and silver label pressing. Cover has a light crease on the laminate across the front. Top right corner has a small split.)

Pacific Jazz, 1961. Very Good ... Out Of Stock

A classic album in the mode of soul jazz piano grooviness that put Les on the map, even back in the early days! The album was recorded live at The Bit, on the Sunset Strip, in LA – and it features Les' classic group with Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Ron Jefferson on drums. Tracks are short and groovy – and titles include "The Shout", "Set Call", "Jubilation", and "Night In Tunisia". LP, Vinyl record album

Rene Thomas/Jacques PelzerThomas Pelzer LTD ... CD
Vogel/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Reedman Rene Thomas always manages to make some really wonderful records – yet this extra-special set may well be one of his best – a marvelous pairing with the legendary guitarist Rene Thomas – a player who was definitely set free in new ways during the 70s, and really changed up his sound from his better-known work of the postwar years! Here, Thomas has a surprising edge on his guitar – one that's balanced nicely by all these great lines from Pelzer on alto, flute, and soprano – in a cool combo that features Rein De Graaf on piano, Jean Linzman on bass guitar, Henk Haverhoek on bass, and the surprising inclusion of Han Bennink on drums! There's a really fresh, creative vibe to the record – like some of the best European indie sides of the time – and titles include "TPL", "Lolita", "Star Eyes", "Jesus Think Of Me", and "Juliette". ✨✧ Fred AstaireAstaire Story (4LP Box Set) ... LP
Mercury/Clef, 1952. Very Good+ 4LP Box ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really amazing set of recordings – vocal sessions done by Fred Astaire in the later season of his career – recorded in the studio with intimate backing by a Verve group that includes Oscar Peterson, Barney Kessel, Charlie Shavers, and Flip Phillips! The material features lovely new interpretations of tunes made famous by Astaire in films, but offered here in a much more relaxed, jazz-based mode. And whether you're a fan of his films or not, Astaire is one heck of a great singer – and hearing him in a setting like this, without the distraction of dancing or film, is really great proof of that fact! Titles include "Cheek To Cheek", "S'Wonderful", "You're Easy To Dance With", "Fascinating Rhythm", "Top Hat White Tie & Tails", "No Strings", and "I Concentrate On You" – plus a few instrumental numbers by the combo. (Vocalists, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue vinyl pressing. Ltd ed spiral bound edition. Inner content is still bound & intact, but a few pages are a bit frayed on the bottom edge. Outer cover looks nice, with minimal wear.)

✨✧ Dexter GordonDexter Gordon – Mosaic Select (Nights At The Keystone Vols 1, 2, & 3) ... CD
Mosaic, 1978/1979. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Late live recordings from the mighty Dexter Gordon – 3 CDs worth of material recorded at the Keystone Korner in the late 70s, all with an inventively-blown power to match Gordon's earlier live sets from the European scene! The format here is similar – with Dexter out front, laying down incredible lines on tenor sax – and getting support from George Cables on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Eddie Gladden on drums. But in a way, the music here is even stronger than before – as Gordon's got a sharper edge, focused solo approach, and is working with an agility that really leaves us breathless. The tracks are long, but have the energy of Gordon's shorter studio tracks for Columbia at the time – and although we're not always huge fans of the "soloist in unfettered live setting" style of recording, we've gotta admit that we really love these tracks! Titles include "You've Changed", "It's You Or No One", "Antabus", "Backstairs/LTD", "The Panther", "Tangerine", "Gingerbread Boy", and "I Told You So". CD

✨✧ Dexter GordonManhattan Symphonie ... LP
Columbia, 1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Later genius from Dexter Gordon – an album recorded upon his return to the US in 1976, and done in a style that breaks the bounds of some of his sessions in Europe! Gordon seems to take new life in the recording – moving past the simple role of main soloist on familiar tunes, and stepping into a much more strongly group-minded leader – one who grooves easily with the piano of George Cables, bass of Rufus Reid, and drums of Eddie Gladden – in a session that's overflowing with soulful invention. Even older tunes take on a new spark of life in these arrangements – and Gordon's phrasing has this "bite" that comes through beautifully, even in the mellower moments. Titles include "Tanya", "I Told You So", "LTD", "Moment's Notice", and "As Time Goes By". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Takeshi InomataSound Limited ... LP
Express/Universal (Japan), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A record with a staid sort of cover, one that hides all the great funky energy underneath – as the set's a killer album from Japanese drummer Takeshi Inomata, working here with his Sound Ltd group in a wonderful blend of jazz, funk, and psychedelic mode! There's a fantastic swirling of elements going on here – including guitar from a young Ryo Kawasaki, plus trumpet from Shunzo Ohno, flute from Toshiako Yokota, and tenor from Takao Uematsu – as well as trombone from Takashi Imai, who handled the arrangements with Inomata and Norio Maeda. The record is a key evolution of the late 60s Japanese way of serving up new jazz takes on American hits – as the record is funky, yet filled with original material that really pushes the boundaries – on titles that include "It Better End Soon", "Sometimes In Winter", "South California Purples", "Tell All The People", "Tag 5 Tune", and "Pacific C55". ✨✧ Bud PowellUps & Downs ... CD
Mainstream/Jazz Heritage, Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Some of the last recordings we've ever seen from bop legend Bud Powell – a mix of solo and trio material that still shows the pianist bursting with imagination! The origin of the tracks is a bit obscure – they're listed on the original album as "compiled by Experience Group Ltd" – and Powell's also working with an unknown bassist and drummer, so there's not much we can tell you about the details of the recording – but as usual, Bud speaks volumes on the piano, which hardly needs much in the way of words from us! Titles include "A Moment's Notice", "Ups/Downs", "Caravan Riffs", "Round Midnight", and "Jazz Black/White". CD

✨✧ SectionForward Motion ... LP
Warner, 1973. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A killer second set from Section – a combo made up of key 70s studio players like Danny Kootch Kortchmar and drummer Craig Doerge! The style here is partly fusion, partly instrumental rock – but never too jamming overall, and recorded with a good spacious sound. Because of the restraint the group uses, there's a tight, crisp sound to the record that results in some solidly grooving numbers – recorded with a bit of a Southern California flourish in the production, but never as slick as the super-huge records these players would work on in years to come! Titles include "Smilin Ed", "El Mirador Bolero", "A Kind OF Albatross", "One Drum", "Bullet Train", "Forward Motion", "Baby Lame", "Get Down Piltdown", "The Garden Of Ryoanji", and "Burning Bush". LP, Vinyl record album
(German Burbank label pressing. Cover has light wear.)
